Chinese speaker here and thought I'd drop a few things that I thought might be useful! In Chinese, it's pretty typical to refer to young men and women who are older than you as gēgē/gē (older brother) and jiějie/jiě (older sister). It usually doesn't imply a familial relation. However, in the case that it is, younger siblings almost always refer to their older siblings with these terms and not their names. Dàgē and dàjiě are pretty common as well, where "dà" means "big", so "big brother" and "big sister". They can mean the same thing as gēgē and jiějie but they imply that the person is the oldest of a whatever group, such as the oldest son/daughter of the household. You can also attach "xiǎo" (small) to make xiǎogē or xiǎojiě. These terms are used for unrelated young men and women, usually used by older people. The English equivalent would probably be calling people in the street "young man" and "young lady" or "miss". The terms for those younger than you/younger siblings are dìdi/dì (younger brother) and mèimei/mèi (younger sister). Another common practice is to attach the shortened versions to names. Lu Guang referred to Qiao Ling (the female character) as Qiao Ling-jie, which just means that she's older than him. Once you reach a certain age though (like 30-40ish?) you'll start being referred to as shūshu (uncle) and āyí (auntie) instead. Again, these usually don't imply a blood relation. This is normally what you use for any middle-aged adult. When Cheng Xiaoshi called the person on the phone "auntie", he recognized them as an older woman but implies that didn't know who she was. As for names, like in Japanese, the last name comes before the first name. However, you can't really separate them the way you would Japanese names. For example, for Cheng Xiaoshi, you wouldn't call him just "Cheng" or "Xiaoshi". The two of them have to go together. The only time you would just use one by itself is if you're attaching an honorific (ex: Cheng-xiansheng, somewhat similar to "Mr. Cheng"). For convenience's sake, some English-speakers just use the first name or the initials (Cheng Xiao-Shi = CXS, Lu Guang = LG). In the case of Cheng Xiaoshi though, his last name is way easier to pronounce than his given name for non-Chinese speakers so I don't blame people for using Cheng instead lol. Note that in Chinese, one syllable = one character/word. Given names are mostly two-character with some one-character, and last names are always one-character. Anything else is very rare. So Chinese full names are almost always three-syllable (eg. Cheng Xiao-Shi) or two-syllable (eg. Lu Guang, Qiao Ling). Sometimes people have nicknames (usually of the cutesy variety) that are unrelated to their given names, but these are normally only used by close family. Parents usually use these for their children. For example, I know someone nicknamed zhūzhū (literally "pig pig", sounds way better in Chinese trust me) after their zodiac year. (goddamn this got really long. sure hope someone reads it lmao) + Fun fact that I can't resist pointing out: Cheng Xiaoshi's given name (xiǎoshí, 小时) translates to "hour". Individually, the characters are xiǎo/小 = small/little and shí/时 = time. It's a very on-the-nose name for sure 😄

Last names are one syllable (one character) only around 90% of the time, there are also many two character last names. First names can't be used alone only if it's a one character name, due to reasons of speaking rhythm it's just not done. But calling someone who has a two character first name, by that name only, implies a very close relationship.

Didn't think they still existed in the modern day. That's interesting. And yeah, ways of address depend a lot on rhythm and how they sound. In addition they both had two character given names, as well, making a four character name in all. These two people are the only people (except for a celebrity) I know that has names like that, and I met two of them in one instance😂 strange way to hit the jackpot. Edit: about the two character first name though, for someone with a standard three character name, calling them only by given name is a pretty safe and universal way of implying intimacy. It's with the one character ones that creativity comes in.
Oh, you guys are going to love this one. Every episode can bring tears to your eyes or make you laugh and you'll always get attached to the "case of the week" characters. Keep in mind that in China (Korea as well), friends can refer to each other as brother/sister (and specifics depending on who is older/younger) without being related at all. the Japanese don't really do this sibling thing, though they still have the "Auntie/Uncle/Granny/Gramps" for older people they encounter as a friendly courtesty. Qiao Ling (the girl), is not a blood sister to either Lu Guang or Cheng Xiaoshi. She is the daughter of the landlord who owns the photography shop (with living quarters upstairs) building. Cheng Xiaoshi's parents ran the shop until they disappeared and now it's his (with Lu Guang). Qiao Ling and Cheng Xiaoshi have known each other since they were little kids.
EMMA. I remember watching the 1st episode not really expecting much, and Emma would be just another charater that passed by as we encounter new stories along the way. BUT by the very end of the show, I found myself very attached to her even tho she only mainly appeared in the 1st episode. I still get teary eyed when I see her appear
This one is sooo good, hyped for season 3 . Imagine how many people been sleeping on it. Really appreciate how emotional it is + good twists. Another good chinese show is Mo Dao Zu Shi (historical\fantasy ecromancy) if anyone interested.
Recommending the same one if you like darker stuff. It also has a netflix show but it's a bit less deep. If you are into romance instead Heaven Official's Blessing has a very respectful couple. Both shows have politics and social commentary! And tears.
Probably my biggest complaint about this series is the translation quality, and I'm curious to see if they'll have similar problems going forward as I did. I don't know what it is, but whoever Crunchyroll got for Chinese-to-English translation, whether they commissioned super cheap, got someone unskilled, or just gave them no time, the dialogue turns out quite stilted at times. It's a real shame.
Facts. I bet the translation quality turned off a lot of people to the show, which is stupid on Crunchyroll's part bcos they'd lose out on revenue this way. Even with bad translation they could clean up the translation with someone to edit the translation bcos there are definitely instances of the wrong tense being used, some of the sayings could also be turned into a Western equivalent etc. I know that in Korean shows for example, the translations tend to use the person's name instead of unnie, oppa etc., which is certainly less confusing for people who aren't that familiar with Korean language.
I watched first season in the dub first, and then sub. The first season subs are pretty woowoo for the first half, but they do improve noticeably (at least to me) after episode 5.5. Season 2 sub was is better, almost no doubling back to figure out what was meant by the subs. The English dub is good too. I also found one of the episodes dubbed into Japanese with English subs and the subs on those are pretty good.

I have been voting for it on the polls and just PRAYING you would react one day because I just KNOW that you will give such interesting commentary, this show is so underhyped it's unreal. Such a good first episode, I love how little exposition there is. The show really throws you into the deep end, and I think it really works. Emma is a really relatable and heartbreaking first character to dive into. I love the way the show established the stakes, we see how Xiaoshi takes on the emotions of the people he possesses, he's not just a bystander and that helps you understand why he may be tempted to change things in the past. At the same time though, we're shown just how dangerous the butterfly effect can be, even on the most innocuous, well-intentioned action. Good on the guys for realizing the sister doesn't necessarily know about the time travel stuff, I did not realize until a way later episode myself lol. Already enjoying the discussion too, I love Caleb's musings on the mechanics of the time travel at 16:17 as well as Jacob's accurate summary of the entire series at 22:04 lol. This is a great show, and I'm so excited for the reactions and discussions we'll get from it!

It's real good and may help w/ some plot/Time Travel stuff. And the dub's dialogue isn't as stilted as the sub translation.
