As a woman from the levant, I learned that I have a typical levantine nose. And learning this makes me feel really good about it for some reason. And I'm much more okay with that (I know this isn't the best way of thinking, but I'm just being honest). the Western ideal and its bias is well documented. case in point - the term "well projected" shows that projection is favoured thus the characteristic is described positively. as a thought experiment, if the asian noses happen to be a beauty ideal, then what is "well-projected" would be called "distended" or "over projected" receiving a much negative connotation. it is a minute detail but it informs alot of the perspectives that shape not only how we see beauty but also describe it. even in the scientific realm, we can see today that the observations are not as neutral or objective as we like to believe.
This absolutely! Language plays a huge role in how we see others and our own features. Something I've also noticed in cosmetic surgery speech in general is that augmenting a nose tip to be smaller is discussed as "refinement," a word we typically associate with being more graceful and elegant. It's interesting because we see here in this video that many faces from all over the globe have more bulbous nose tips as a norm, yet narrowing the tip is seen as an improvement. Even the word "bulbous," which is literally just a descriptor word, has our own ugly connotations attached to it, just Google the word and its synonyms are "swollen," "bulging," and "bloated."
@@ZoyaTheArtist @burbo totally agree on "bulbous". I do notice practising in Asia, the word is replaced with "heavy" or "more volume/tissue" during consults. it denotes a sensitivity to patients (and also the doctors who are themselves Asian). very interesting phenomena, it reveals the perpetuation of Caucasian beauty ideals, especially when used by Western doctors to address non Caucasian features. more awareness is needed, but i find this goes much deeper than linguistics and sensitivity training.
THANK YOU for addressing more Latin and Middle-Eastern features, on your previous videos about noses I had requested it! Anyway, it confirms the reason why I am often perceived as Greek or North African. I now understand in what way my features are perceived as typically Mediterranean (which is true since I'm French Catalan).
I wonder about Slavic noses, they vary extremely much. There also is a big misconception that all Slavic people are Russian and bunch all Slavic people together with Russian beauty standards.
@@dimonddust4318 I don't think that's true, that's why we can pick out certain nationalities amongst others. We might all be European but we definitely have different traits & facial features.
@@Riosgirl98 Perhaps, but not enough to warrant a separate segment specifically about Slavic features/noses. The reason that some European nationalities are distinguishable from other Europeans in the crowd is mostly due to the manner of dress and/or behaviour/accents/movement. Seems like there's very little research being done on African noses. The noses from West, Central, East, South and Black Northern Africa are VERY different. Also differences in tribal noses even within the same country...
MJ had been in several interviews where he talks about how his father would tell him how ugly he was as he started to mature in comparison to what he looked like as a little boy. Most of those comments were centered around his nose. That's gotta be awful for an impressionable young person to constantly be reminded of by someone who's literally and physically responsible for half of that child's genetics. It’s monstrous and wrong for Joe Jackson to have treated him like that.
My Father did the same to me. He didn't appreciate ANYTHING in me. He is Hispanic and my Mom is Irish. I always thought I was an ugly little kid until I saw photos that tuned up after Mom and Dad passed. What an adorable little girl! Why wud he criticize me so. My Mom, the same. I grew up being a super athlete - cud do anything, baseball to ballet & gymnastics. Coaches loved me. But the folks ignored me. (I guess I was an embarrassnent??) As an adult - I ALWAYS heard "OH MY GOSH! Did you see her??? SHES GORGEOUS!" Still at this adult age, the insecurity exists. I always felt like I understood MJ, his insecurities. I cud have gone into the movies. Stephen Spielberg was one that wanted to interview me. But my folks developed a shy girl. Not good.
I love my big button nose. I have virtually no nose bridge with big eyes. It too me a long time to get here. Though I do resemble an American girl doll lmao. I would not look good with a smaller nose or a higher nose bridge. As I get older, I love having high facial neoteny.
For some strange reason, I feel better about my nose after learning about it... I'm South Asian but my nose seems to be in between Caucasian, Arab and African characteristics 🤷🏻♀️
Gooood video, soo detailed. My nose is probably my favourite feature, I think it's a really interesting display of the variance in African features which my parents have. It's a neat little medium between them.
Tyra Banks had a nose job and although it wasn’t dramatic like Michael, it was noticeable. I’ve always wondered why it was so distracting, and why I preferred her nose before modeling. Even though I admit I generally like narrow noses. After watching your video, it dawned to me that it changed her facial harmony, she made her bridge too flat. I think if she just got it narrowed instead of both narrowed and flatter, it would have looked less jarring
@Sierra J I didn’t know she had two nose jobs. Thanks for bringing that to my awareness. Her nose was beautiful the way it was but I understand she was under a lot of pressure as one of the first Black supermodels
im interested about the area between the nose and mouth. in some caucasians it appears a bit protruded and the transition between the nose and mouth in smooth (sometimes even tilted in a way that makes it more protruded towards the nose and flatter towards the lips), while contrary to that, most asian and african nose tips end in a certain position and from that spot, the mouth is connected tilted in the opposite direction (if that makes sense). im interested how that affects people's facial balance and if it plays a factor in overall attractiveness
i have been fixated on mine too! I saw how the distance between the base of the nose and the lips makes a difference in attractiveness... mostly because I was comparing myself to a picture of angelina jolie who has a very short distance whereas as mine is a bit long :(
@@sanalulu2172 i do agree that small distance is attractive but i dont think long distance is unattractive, i think it all depends on other facial features and overall face balance, u can see many asian artists have a big distance between their nose and mouth, yet they are seen as attractive and fit the beauty standards in a big variety of countries so i also think its about face shape and the way u style ur hair to bring balance.. and if u are conscious about yours i think u can do other things to accentuate features abt ur face that u like better, which will make the distance less noticeable
yes! i’ve been thinking about this because my top lip is upturned and makes the space between my lips and nose smaller than it already is (which is apparently more attractive). i haven’t been able to find much information on it. i just heard Lorry Hill mention it briefly.
it’s called a “philtrum” and i believe a taller one is aging while a shorter one is… not? idk lmao it’s all about harmony in the end but it has been discussed elsewhere on this channel

East Africans are a hybrid race so there part middle eastern or eastern medterranian the lingo doesn't matter it's just caucasian mixed with saharan african so they have an african and middle eastern hybrid face.
Arabs are indisuishable from whites in a global genetic context same with Iranians why they get called different races I don't know also i swear the arab was at 40 percent

I've always wanted to undergo rhinoplasty surgery. My nose from the side view is similar to the Hispanic one while the front view appears wide like the African one. I wish I had smaller and more feminine nose shape. I'm southeast asian and majority of the people here wanted to have 'European' noses.
Not Hispanic- I'm half white and half Japanese. That darned nose hump comes from both sides. Ended up having a Hispanic looking nose - overall graceful, small, projected. Just dropping at the tip slightly and a tiny bump
Maldito tabique torcido.
Don't feel bad, I and many other people find noses with that kind of hump to be the most attractive kind. Japanese and hispanics often have the hottest noses 😁
I have a very Southeast Asian nose. Bulbous with huge nostrils. I never liked my nose when I was young because I was always teased because of it not only by neighbourhood kids but also by adults as well. When I still don't know the concept of surgery or, rather not like it, I always pinch them together. But my Mexican likes my "Filipino" nose. Even a friend (Mexican as well) think it's really attractive. Apparantly they don't like their tall noses when in fact it's what we like here in the Philippines. 😅
People need to stop acting like cosmetic plastic surgery is empowering. It’s not empowering when everyone is after one very specific nose shape and enforcing that ethnic non western-european noses/features are ugly. Great video by the way :)

These videos are so informative! I just want to know all the details about my own face lol I’m Eritrean and our noes are pretty different from what was described as the African American nose. Idk what I’d pin mine as I’m thinking in between middle eastern and caucasian
I really like this. I'm going to save it to refer back to. I used to always wish my nose was upturned and small, like so many of my classmates and relatives who had that characteristic. With age, I've grown to be okay with my slight downturn, long bridge and projected profile. I actually grew to love it even more when I started piercing my face, and I'm enjoying wearing a gold hoop on each side of my skinny nostrils!
I really liked how the informations are classified by ethnicity. I am Egyptian but my nose looks sorta like latinas and some called me a mestiza 😅 i really like my nose but i don't know in which category i am 😃
Pretty sure mine is a eastern European or Slavic nose, Ukrainian and Polish genes on my dads side. They usually have a pretty specific nose shape. A straight sloped down pointy nose. I like it, its not big or anything, just a strong profile.
I think that regarding Hispanics, there are very noticeable differences between the three groups, or at least between Hispanic Caribbeans and Central/South Americans. On average, Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Dominicans have lower admixtures of indigenous heritage compared to the average central/South American. It’s also worth noting that our indigenous ancestors are not the same ethnic groups. This and the entire factor of admixture tells you just how diverse we could be. At least here in Puerto Rico, our noses are more South European/Mediterranean. I’ve seen many Turkish plastic surgeons work on noses that look just like mine, which is why I’m probably going to get my rhinoplasty there if I ever do :)
The DNA is absolutely affected by the environment in which it grows. The water and minerals and climate are important in understanding cell growth and adaptation! I love this!

Wait, why not talk about Latinos in general instead of just the Spanish speaking countries? Brazil takes up over 47% of south America and it's very common to be very mixed just like with the other Latino countries.
Because most Latinos are mixed with Spanish and Indigenous and small amounts of african depending on the country. So this is where common sense comes in. If you have more white ancestry than the two other races then you will most likely have a European nose, and so on and so on. It is not that difficult

Wouldn’t change my nose for anything though !
My nose has been broken twice, once in sports during high school when I proved a point to a Varsity player. Another time in Combat Training and took a kevlar to the face. I’ll probably get it corrected to be straight again.
The only way I can describe my nose is English and Asian mixed together. My father is very European and my mother is Japanese, so that's what I got 😅🤷♀

the Western ideal and its bias is well documented. case in point - the term "well projected" shows that projection is favoured thus the characteristic is described positively. as a thought experiment, if the asian noses happen to be a beauty ideal, then what is "well-projected" would be called "distended" or "over projected" receiving a much negative connotation. it is a minute detail but it informs alot of the perspectives that shape not only how we see beauty but also describe it. even in the scientific realm, we can see today that the observations are not as neutral or objective as we like to believe.
Well said!
I just take it as a way of describing they are more developed or something :/
I was just thinking of that!
Slavic people are generally really beautiful ❤
Slav checking in from Poland xD
Slavic features, in general, are very similar to others of European descent. If there is any difference, then it is so small that I didn't notice any.
Fecial features have very little to do with it.
Seems like there's very little research being done on African noses. The noses from West, Central, East, South and Black Northern Africa are VERY different. Also differences in tribal noses even within the same country...
Africans from the south as a general rule have a wider nasal base to help gain more air however the relativity of prognathism and flat ness varies
@@tysolbohan6446 reread the above comment, they differ GREATLY!
@@DanDan-z7e East africans maybe but i'm talking about sahran ones.

THIS WAS SOOOO INTERESTING!!! Please more content like this. I'd love to see a video like this about eyes
This!!!
i dont know about the eyes, but he already has many videos like that, you should check them
Gooood video, soo detailed.
Her nose was beautiful the way it was but I understand she was under a lot of pressure as one of the first Black supermodels
what does michael have to do with tyra banks? they both had it for very different reasons lmao
Tyra Banks apparently went to a surgeon who specialized in African-American features
im interested about the area between the nose and mouth. in some caucasians it appears a bit protruded and the transition between the nose and mouth in smooth (sometimes even tilted in a way that makes it more protruded towards the nose and flatter towards the lips), while contrary to that, most asian and african nose tips end in a certain position and from that spot, the mouth is connected tilted in the opposite direction (if that makes sense). im interested how that affects people's facial balance and if it plays a factor in overall attractiveness
i have been fixated on mine too!
Do you have a celebrity example? I wanna understand what you mean
it’s called a “philtrum” and i believe a taller one is aging while a shorter one is… not? idk lmao it’s all about harmony in the end but it has been discussed elsewhere on this channel
What about east Africa? I really appreciate the work behind this video but I don't think there is an '' African nose'' since east and west africans have very different features. Maybe you could do a video on East African features? I would definitely watch it :)
yess im thinking about my somalian friends all the time lol. like they aint got wide nose
I know, I wish he'd discussed Horn of Africa, especially since he was discussing East vs South Asians - surely he can apply that level of analysis to Africa too?
East Africans are a hybrid race so there part middle eastern or eastern medterranian the lingo doesn't matter it's just caucasian mixed with saharan african so they have an african and middle eastern hybrid face.
Arabs are indisuishable from whites in a global genetic context same with Iranians why they get called different races I don't know also i swear the arab was at 40 percent
@Beauty Amharas kinda look like Indians for some reason the mid face and eyes scream Indian. Also your probably correct.
I've watched so many of your videos (and they're so well made and educational), however this has to be one of the most unhealthiest channels to watch 😭. Where facial features seemed unnoteworthy to me before, I no longer have an "untrained" eye and now see so much wrong with my face and automatically notice the harmony (or lack of it) in faces I see.
I mean same but for the most part I ignore it, this channel really helps me understand anatomy so I can draw faces with more accuracy

I live for these videos and I really loved you mentioning hispanic noses, it would be awesome if you could keep addressing hispanic features in the upcoming videos
I've always wanted to undergo rhinoplasty surgery. My nose from the side view is similar to the Hispanic one while the front view appears wide like the African one. I wish I had smaller and more feminine nose shape. I'm southeast asian and majority of the people here wanted to have 'European' noses.
I didn’t start accepting and loving my nose until zendaya and moana
dreaming of the day you do a video on kento yamazaki's features lol the man's face is just perfect in every way
Do cheekbone shapes please.
I’m Hispanic and I always think “ I was so close to having a perfect nose, just that damn hump.”
And now I have a black eye peas song in my head haha
Not Hispanic- I'm half white and half Japanese. That darned nose hump comes from both sides. Ended up having a Hispanic looking nose - overall graceful, small, projected. Just dropping at the tip slightly and a tiny bump
My nose looks exactly like the Hispanic noses shown and I'm just like damn... so close to a nice nose 🤣
Maldito tabique torcido.
Don't feel bad, I and many other people find noses with that kind of hump to be the most attractive kind. Japanese and hispanics often have the hottest noses 😁
I'm a middle easterner with a perfectly symmetrical, natural nose. But I do have the lump which I refer to as a roman nose
those kinds of noses are the most attractive to me :)
teardrop Thanks!
Agree 🙏
It is empowering cause it gives people confidence, whats the deal if they want a small button nose? Such a dumb comment, even liked 🤦♀️

In the Philippines, a flat nose is considered unflattering. And it's kinda sad.
But flat noses are so cute ;-;
What a great reference for portrait and character design artists!
