Do you have a Dillard's or other department store right out of the 90s near you? Also, don't forget Siesta Mall and Retail Archaeology apparel and merchandise are now available 😀 teespring.com/stores/retail-archaeology
Based on the 6-7 times I've been to Dillards, I'm always really impressed with their merchandise, the staff, and how clean the stores are. I wish Dillards would expand more into the Chicago area and fill some former Carson's and Boston Store location. I love going to the mall and shopping, but boy do Sears, Macy's and JCPenney get boring after awhile. ;)
You should check out the Flagstaff Mall. Dillards has never been updated, very 90's. The Sears is also about to close, and it was original to the mall.
This is probably my favorite looking department store location. Its just so clean, bright and elegant. Its also refreshing to see a department store with plenty of customers in it. Thank you for documenting this store :)
I’m a. child of the 80s and 90s and from Texas, so I grew up shopping in Dillard’s and back then, you weren’t cool if you didn’t have some boujee Guess jeans or Gibeaud jeans from Dillard’s!😂 You should do a video on Mervyns. That was also a shopping staple for us 90s folk!😃
It's really funny because, before I found your channel, I thought I was the only one who was interested in malls and shopping centers this way. Dillards was always a big thing in my area of TX along with JC Penney and a few others. I know it's not defunct, but if you ever get a chance, you should come to TX because we have the first, and still largest as far as I know, Neiman Marcus store in the world as Neiman himself was from TX.
We spent a lot of time in Dillard's at Meadows Mall, Las Vegas, NV where I grew up in the 90s. During the holidays, Dillard's ran a special called the "Liberty Falls Collection," a small ceramic Christmas village that you could only buy at Dillard's. Every year my mom would be in and out of Dillard's picking up whatever pieces she missed the week/ year before. I loved how they would dress the store up in wreaths and trees, and instead of doing colored Christmas lights, they would use clear glass bulbs in all of their ornaments that would flash on and off at random. As a kid I always thought their stores seemed magical during the holidays because you could see twinkling all over. I remember the store always had a specific smell, and each time I walk into a well-kept Dillard's, I get hit with that smell and it always takes me back to the holidays and time I spent with my mom and my grandpa at the mall. Unfortunately the demographic around the mall has dramatically changed since the 90s, and the Dillard's there is now a one-level clearance center. I was there visiting over a year ago, and while the Dillard's was still nicely kept, it felt dark, lonely, and dying. My mom also spent a lot of time in JCPenney collecting all of the "Home Towne Express" pieces, which was a another exclusive during the holidays, only at Penny's. It was a ceramic Santa train with multiple cars that you would collect and display. She still has this and the Liberty Falls Collection, which she sets up every year at Christmas time :)
Metro Orlando Florida has about 4 malls with Dillards. 🛒 Malls are mainly used by foreign tourists, seniors, business travel. Buyers go get $$$ from retail stores then re sell it overseas; Asia Brazil Columbia, Argentina, etc.
If you ever find yourself up north, you have to check out the Dillards of Toledo,OH. It’s an incredible tribute to the 90’s and the former retailer, Lion Store, that Dillard’s bought out in 1993. In the giant 2 story atrium is a glass elevator and the gold, lifesize Lion statues that belonged to the original company. It’s great that Dillard’s retained the historical significance of the store. This place does my heart good.
bro wtf I had no idea u were in AZ 😭 I go to arrowhead mall literally every month or so, that’s crazy . as soon as the video started I was like is that arrowhead 😦
My first experience with Dillard's is when I moved to South Fort Myers Florida in the early 90s. It was one of my mom's favorite stores and she couldn't wait to take me to it. I fell in love with it right away! It actually had low ceilings which made it more intimate and I know they had greeters greeting us inside the store which I thought was really classy & top-notch. It was the only place that I could buy my perfume at... (this is before internet before everybody had a computer.)
My mother and mainly my sister used to love going here even back when we did not have a lot of money. It sorta got her and my mom into financial stress. I love the asthetic and the fact that mine used to offer free paper water cups by the bathroom. I've never seen that in any other store. Now that I am an adult I can't really see myself shopping there. Plato's closet, Goodwill, Amazon, and maybe Target are my go tos. I would rather wear cheap clothes than be broke :'3
I worked at JB White department store fresh out of HS and there was and still is a Dillards in the mall. I always liked the look of the Dillard stores but I have to admit I am as big of a fan of the 90's look as you are. I would like to see them updated. The JB White I worked at has been remodeled a ton. It is one of the top stores and the mall it is 95% full with some name brand stores. I really enjoyed this video. Thanks!
I only see Dillard's when visiting Florida. It was refreshing to see a upkept and clean department store. With Sears and Boston Store done and Macy's having one foot out the door going to Dillard's was almost a trip back in time to the 90's.
Great Video, I also have been a long time shopper at Dillard’s. I like the statement of how you like he layout and design of non-outlet locations. We have a Dillard’s concerting to clearance center in Music City Mall Lewisville, Texas. We can all agree online options have hurt brick and mortar locations. But what all retailers except Best Buy don’t understand is online sites can’t replace customers experience & service.
@@gmcnewlook Yeah I've had nothing but bad experiences with Crossley players. They had some Victrola branded players as well but I have 0 experience with those.
Im not surprised they stock crap turntables since these days even record stores are primarily selling these things over better turntables. I guess they go for what sells which is very unfortunate because people starting on Crosleys and Victrolas may end up hating vinyl. I wish more places sold used Technics stuff.
Thank u so much for uploading this!! I’m doing research for an art exhibition I’m putting together for my senior year in uni. I wanted to learn more about the nostalgia of shopping malls since seeing the amount of malls dying down nowadays.
All the memories of my youth! My mom, when she was alive used to shop there every chance she had. My older sister bought me my first bra at a Dillard’s. I remember going with my older sister to buy stationary by the pound. They had beautiful, colorful stationary, and fancy pens. My mom would buy linens from there, because they were the best. I use to buy my dad and mom’s Father’s Day and Mother’s Day presents from there. We took family portraits there as well. We weren’t rich. My mom would save up to buy us these very special things. I still own a flat sheet from my youth that is the softest I have ever slept on. When my daughter was younger I would take her to get special things from there as well. And we both still shop there. Dillard’s is a special place with special things. Everyone should experience Dillard’s if given the chance.
Dillard's is one of FEW upscale Department stores. It always exudes elegance. My Dillard's in Kansas City had the wooden parquet floors when they took over in 1984. They've done a lot of upgrades since.
Great very well maintained looking Dillards store. We don't have any up here in western Washington state but I do remember going to Dillards when Inlived in Texas for a few years. It's nice to see a store thriving with customers.
I can't wait to go to our mall today! I'm from daytona beach, fl, and our Volusia Mall has total 90's aesthetic appeal too. Infact, Dilliards occupies 3 of the anchor buildings at this mall. It will be neat to intentially notice all of the remnant decor from that era. Having some "thc" onboard for the trip, and some good classic mall music makes the experience very enjoyable, and a cheap way to beat the Florida heat. You're helping to make malls interesting again!! thanks!
I was actually someone who worked for Dillards in high school in the mens big and tall department. we have a few dillards stores about 30 minutes from each other that look like this. :) they are pretty, and the maintenance folks work hard to keep those brass lights and such looking good! ♡
I miss the 90's so bad I also like the look of this store I never had one where I'm from but it's nice. There's just something about malls that relax me.
I'm from Texas so Dillard's has always been a shopping staple in my life. The Dillard's in my hometown got that back lit curved ceiling design in the early 2000s. The Dillard's in the town I'm in now has never gotten that treatment and in fact still has the parquet wood flooring from the 80s. Both towns have a similar population and I would assume similar sales numbers so it's interesting to see how the stores have been treated differently. I recently had the chance to go to the flagship Dillard's in Little Rock and I was extremely surprised that it's actually not that pretty of a store. I was expecting aesthetics similar to the Dillard's at North Park Mall in Dallas which is gorgeous but they were nothing alike. I think Dillard's really puts money into the stores where their sales figures are the highest which makes sense. I'd love to know what equipment you use to film. I'd like to film stores in my area but I'm always scared that if they figure out what I'm doing, I'll get thrown out.
I'm from Texas too. When our mall was busy losing its Sears, Dillards was busy doubling its floorspace. Though I still don't know what they're going to do with the former Sears, our mall isn't really hurting from its loss. I guess, like all real estate, it's due to location. The next closest indoor shopping mall is an hour away, and our mall is just off the Interstate and right next to where the city decided to build its convention center.
Cool video man. Loved seeing the timeless look of a Dillard's store. I too once worked for Dillard's, in the men's suits and furnishings area. Back in roughly '99-01 years. I worked at the now demolished one, here in West Palm Beach FL. Prior to that, I spent 5 years working in the same departments, for a now out of business Department store named Burdine's. It was a store only located here in Florida. Hense it's motto, "The Florida Store". It was a Federated entity.
I never grew up with a Dillard’s and didn’t know what it was until I left California and moved to Tucson. I’ve always really liked going there since. Something about department stores really relax me and feel like home. Maybe it was because my mom worked at one. Thanks for the upload
Speaking of Packard Bell (2:35), its Wikipedia page makes for interesting reading. In a nutshell, Packard Bell withdrew from the U.S. computer market around the turn of the millenium, essentially becoming an internationally-based company that sold wireless networking and television equipment. At the start of 2008, Acer bought the brand to prevent Lenovo from getting it, and now Packard Bell and Gateway are part of the same subsidiary of Acer (two different name plates selling the same computers in different parts of the world). Someone bought the old U.S. trademark (because Packard Bell under Acer only sells outside the U.S. now) and has interested J.C. Penney in trying to revive the Packard Bell computer line for selling to college students, but so far nothing's come of that plan yet.
"Packard Bell had a reputation for selling the absolute worst, bottom of the barrel, slapped together garbage you could waste actual money on" … that was after they became part of NEC in late 1995. *Prior* to 1995, they had a reputation for selling computers full of proprietary crap that wouldn't work on any other model, and anyone else's peripherals often wouldn't work in Packard Bell computers. Case in point, I once repaired on a 1993 Packard Bell with a CD-ROM unit that used 9V instead of the 12V that was industry standard. Took me a long time to find a replacement unit that would work. So I agree, Packard Bell has *never* had a good reputation among service technicians. It was either proprietary shit that couldn't be replaced, or cheap shit that broke as soon as the warranty ran out. Maybe... *maybe...* now that Acer owns them, their reputation will improve. But I'm not holding my breath (I look silly when I turn blue.)
Awesome video! Watching this, it makes me flash back to my childhood - I remember being 9 years old, circa 1996, shopping with my mother at the local mall department stores. We had Dillards in Virginia, and of course JcPenney's and Sears. Also had Hecht's which had a similar late 80s, 90s aesthetic so beautifully displayed here. A lot of brass and black and white tile flooring were prominent style details of the '90s aesthetic'. I remember wandering through the spaces, feeling like a bit of an explorer in between the racks. It was a nice experience, that unique 90s shopping mall fun day. A few hours of shopping, then some frozen yogurt afterwards or mall court Chinese food, or maybe Sbarros! If it was a REALLY nice day, lunch at a sit down restaurant like the old Woolworth's luncheonette, Picadilly's cafeteria or the sit-down Chinese restaurant we had at one of the local malls we'd shop at. Sigh. Great memories. Even people's attitudes and temperaments seemed different back then. The style and decor was DEFINITELY better and still lingers in a part of my brain making its way into the personal home decor that I like, even....little touches of the 90s incorporated into my personal aesthetic/home aesthetic. The era lives on!
The future better yield completely different building styles because I wanna show my grandkids these videos when I'm like 80 and be like "yeah architecture used to look like that" and "that's what a mall was"
I used to walk past or through this Dillard’s when I worked at Arrowhead mall. I was always impressed at how much it felt like walking through a time capsule.
My mom used to go to Dillard's every time we went to the mall. It was a McAlpin's earlier in my life, and changed to the Dillard's brand in the late 90's.
I’m in Utah and the busiest mall here has a Dillard’s. I have really fond memories of going there when I was growing up. About 10 or so years ago the Sears that was at the mall closed and was torn down. The Dillard’s moved to the location and a new Dillard’s was built where Sears was. And where the Dillard’s had been, that building got torn down and a new Macy’s was built there. The new Dillard’s is really nice, but I kinda miss the aesthetics of the old one. It definitely needed to go though, I remember it being so worn down at the end before it was torn down.
I've never heard of this store before watching your videos. From this video it looks pretty much like The Bay I've been to here in Canada. Same type of two-story layout with the perfume counters right at the mall entrance.
My in-laws have Dillard's parquet flooring in their dining room! They're based out of Arkansas, and my husband's uncle worked in their facilities department on store remodels in the 80's.
I work at Dillard’s in Jackson , ms.. it’s straight out of the late 80’s. Still have the original pink carpet. Mirrored columns and the restrooms are so old looking. You should come see it.
Very nice store. I'm impressed by the size of the non clothing departments. No Dillard's where I grew up but the store looks a lot like the Kaufmann's department stores we had that were from the same time, at least before they got absorbed into the Macy's monolith. The biggest thing decor wise was that Kaufmann's always had wood parquet floors with moss green carpet in the men's department
I had never heard of Dillard's until the late 80s/early 90s when traveling in Phoenix and I saw one at a mall. The store you showed, looked nice in side.
This mall really reminds me of the mall my mom would take me for our daily shopping when I was a little kid despite being from the other side of the Earth.
I grew up in Peoria. Arrowhead mall was my childhood mall, still go there often for the Lego store. I played Mall Tycoon as a kid and modeled my mall off the layout of this one. I remember when the Forever 21 used to be a Mervyns way back in early 2000s, it still has that awesome but awful tile design on the outside. There was a Toys R Us that recently closed(the Halloween City in the old building still has the toys r us stars wall decor when you go in) and a Club Disney at one point in the late 90s also in that area. I could tell you the history, used to orange farms and fruit stands, the In&Out burger spot was the last fruit stand to go. I love your work and I try and go visit places you filmed often since I live so close to them.
I'm from Canada and had never heard of Dillards until I started watching videos about dying malls on RUclips. The department store is pretty much a thing of the past in Canada, the only big department stores we have left for mall anchors outside of huge cities are Hudsons Bay and get this, WalMart. At the huge megamalls in the bigger cities like Vancouver and Toronto they have stores like Nieman's and Nordstrom, but not in smaller towns. No Sears, KMart, Macys, JC Penney or Dillards. Clothes shopping is impossible!
I worked at Rich's department store in the late 80s in the men's fragrance department. Gifts with purchase started back then. Rich's was bought in 2005 by the same company that owned Macy's. Macy's stores are still where the former Rich's were in the South. I love working for Rich's. We've never had a Dillard's in this area. Tfs!
That is a super busy Dillards. With Metrocenter gone as a regional mall, it is the only one on the westside besides Desert Sky, which has a limited selection in some departments.
Love the smooth curves of the ceiling. I am in the UK but travel to the US frequently and this Dillard's reminds me of one at the Lakeside Mall in New Orleans which I visited last year.
Before the Dillard's in Houston's West oaks Mall was open. My mom forced me to go as a kid to get new clothes. I remember the flooring tile it was well done.
I remember Dillard’s in the 90s, it was the top department store to go to in Arizona, until 98 when Nordstrom arrived. I use to buy all my Tommy Hilfiger at the fiesta mall dillards
Oh my God. For a while, I couldn't for the life of me remember what Dillard's reminded me of, and then it hit me like a ton of bricks! Mervyn's!!!! Especially the gift wrap examples on the wall.
Kinda off-topic from the video, but if you ever get a chance to visit Florida, you should check out the Gulf View Square Mall on U.S. 19. It wasn't particularly busy today on a Saturday afternoon, half the stores are closed, there's dozens of burned out lights to the point one of the main walkways is kinda dark, the fountain's off, an anchor store is vacant, and it has a GNC and Bath and Body Works. Pretty much perfect for this channel. The Sears and Dillard's there didn't look run-down, either.
This looks EXACTLY like the Dillards at the Cool Springs Galleria in Franklin TN. Store opened with the mall in 1990 or 1991, I think its the only store in that mall that hasn't been gutted/redone. We shopped there a lot when I was a kid, still looks the same today. Still though, its very clean, well laid out, whoever did the interior design did a great job because it still looks as nice as the Macy's, which was completely gutted about 8-10 years ago.
Going to get a shaved ice in Hillcrest and might just drive past Dillards headquarters on my way. One of the unexpectedly several Arkansas businesses to really do well on a larger level (though still quite a ways down from our most successful).
I Love Dillard's 😁 Enjoyed working at Dillard's, and my mother would always take us to Dillard's at Hancock Center in Austin TX, and Highland Mall, also Barton Creek Mall. Dillards Hancock Center as a outdoor shopping mall was the last and then it all changed , Dilllards at Highland Mall was Great , but as time moved on, it's Awesome days along with the mall were finally closing it's doors. DILLARDS at Barton Creek Mall is the last of founding old malls lefted in Austin, then came Lake Creek in the Mid 90's and now the Dillard's at the Domain. 😁Oh, there was Westgate shopping center, another last one and North Cross Mall, that was my favorite , granted there was no Dillard's. 😀
Literally the mall in the bay are (CA) up until a few years ago. The logo, Macy’s brown carpet, JC Penny grey carpet and even the old fixtures were very 90s and 00s. Even the tile flooring in the mall had been the exact same since I was a kid in elementary school in the early 2000s. The city recently decided to change up the interior maybe like 2 or 3 years ago....?
The mall near my house has Dillards split up. North side is Mens, Children, and the homegoods stuff. But the one on the South side is all Women's stuff so the mall near me has technically 5 anchors even though its only 4 (JC Penny, Macys, Dicks Sporting Goods, and Dillards). The mall in my area (Melbourne Square in FL) has been doing fairly well, its always pretty busy.
Yeah, don't worry. Arrowhead has always been an area with a bit of money. Metrocenter, not so much. I lived by Arrowhead when it was being built and went to High School around the corner from Metrocenter. The demographics are completely different.

Retail Archaeology The Dillards in Capital Mall(Jefferson City, Missouri) is timelocked to 1989. Not the products, but the store itself

Malls were packed to the brime in the 90s. Now the same location I go to has a closed Best Buy and ghost town of a mall.
@Tod Wilkinson no, you didn't, you weren't around 1/1/80 to experience the beginnings of them. I was born in the 70's, so I did.
You’re 6’4 and your dad is 6’9!! Giants!! Wow! 🙂

I knew that Mall was going under 10 years ago.
I like the Red Rock location, very unique.
Don’t know how or why this was in my recommended videos but now I wanna go to dillards. Damn you Retail archeology!!!
Dillard's is like the only place in smaller towns that makes the people that shop inside the store feel boujee lol
Boujee. Explain that
The music really reminds me of mall shopping in the 80's and 90's.
We don’t have Dillard’s in Pennsylvania but I do really like there stores. I find the workers go above and beyond and they have a great selection

For me, a northern, Dillard's was a special treat when I went down south. This Dillard's looks very modern compared to what I've seen
I work at a Dillard’s.In the jewelry/watch department.And I also love that Kate Spade watch spinner💚
All the memories of my youth!

This Dillards along with the one at Desert Sky Mall looks like absolute gems for upscale 90's department stores. Nice vid!
Thanks!
What a gorgeous store.
Try using those spy glasses things to film. I'd reccomend finding the best one as there's a lot of crappy ones.
Burdines was another casualty of macy*s destruction of US department stores
In the early 90s, i worked in the Polo department of the Dillards in Naples, Florida. It was the most beautiful Dillards i have ever seen!
I love the vinyl section at dillards
This is a great Dillard's and a great mall. I was transferred to Phoenix from the midwest 21 years ago and have enjoyed this mall ever since.
The future better yield completely different building styles because I wanna show my grandkids these videos when I'm like 80 and be like "yeah architecture used to look like that" and "that's what a mall was"
I remember getting concert tickets at the Dillard's ticket center. Arrowhead is probably the most shoppers since bell rd is always so busy!
I live in Arkansas which is Dillard's HQ, so I've been there plenty of times. It's great when you find a sale!
I used to walk past or through this Dillard’s when I worked at Arrowhead mall. I was always impressed at how much it felt like walking through a time capsule.
Dillard's Store do look beautifully 1990s.
My mom used to go to Dillard's every time we went to the mall. It was a McAlpin's earlier in my life, and changed to the Dillard's brand in the late 90's.
It's good to see another mall video from you.
I haven't been in Dillard's in years. I remember my mom going in pretty often ages ago.
That brings me back my first job was in the food court at a mall
Dillards is a pretty popular department store here in Austin. Quite a few of them.
They're still pretty popular here too in Nebraska
Never been to a Dillard's, but watching this walk-through reminded me a lot of my local Macy's store.
Kaufmanns is greatly in its Pittsburgh home town. Macy*s has never caught on here; it's nothing special.
I've never been to a Dillard's but I'm really glad to see they're doing well
I really dig this Dillard's. That tiling alone is my favorite.
Love your vids man. I live in Melbourne Florida and malls are still active in central Florida. Remember Mervyn's?
I worked at Rich's department store in the late 80s in the men's fragrance department. Gifts with purchase started back then. Rich's was bought in 2005 by the same company that owned Macy's. Macy's stores are still where the former Rich's were in the South. I love working for Rich's. We've never had a Dillard's in this area. Tfs!
That is a super busy Dillards. With Metrocenter gone as a regional mall, it is the only one on the westside besides Desert Sky, which has a limited selection in some departments.
Thats funny you said the packard bell. Thats what got me on this video. I was thinking back to when Dillards had an electronoc department
I use to buy all my Tommy Hilfiger at the fiesta mall dillards
can't say I've ever been to dillard's but I do dig the aesthetic!
Nice interior of that store! I really love that black and white tile work on that walk way.
love that b&w tile.
I couldn't agree more about the black and white marble floors. They're awesome!
WOW, elegant--the ceiling's smooth futuristic curves contrast nicely with the traditional flooring. Also I had no idea you were so tall!
This store location is beautiful! Dillard's is awesome in general. I've looked through this store at the mall (Arrowhead) and Paradise Valley Mall.
Going to get a shaved ice in Hillcrest and might just drive past Dillards headquarters on my way. One of the unexpectedly several Arkansas businesses to really do well on a larger level (though still quite a ways down from our most successful).
I do agree with you absolutely beautiful! It's like stepping into a time capsule back to our past.
Very beautiful store, so shiny and clean
I remember that carpet for 2007 i work was for Dillard in Sanford,fl
Great video. The Dillards here in Omaha is great!
I still have a dillards store at my mall, its cool.
Thanks for the tour.
The Macy's at ATC is doing so well Macy's is actually spending money and doing a lot of improvements and updates.
I really hope Arrowhead doesn’t go dead like Metrocenter. I love shopping there.
Yeah, don't worry. Arrowhead has always been an area with a bit of money. Metrocenter, not so much. I lived by Arrowhead when it was being built and went to High School around the corner from Metrocenter. The demographics are completely different.
I’m so glad I’ve subscribed to your channel.
Woah. My local Dillards Store has that same design but it was built in 1987 and was added a 3rd floor in 1991
I love Dillard’s
Sunrise Mall in Brownsville, Texas wasn’t built in the nineties but it feels that way. It’s always full of people as well lol.
You should do commentary on the "Visual staff / departments" that do all the visual presentations. it would be interesting.
brings back memories
