I'm happy you spoke about Momotaro's past life, it really helps other people who don't know, misjudge him and unfairly compare him to other silverbacks to understand him and why he is the way he is, it's not his fault but a consequence of past traumatic experiences. I love Momotaro and his little family! ❤️🦍
I appreciate your very thoughtful and well said comment! I, too, hate when comments are made that are hateful towards Momotaro. It's one thing if a viewer prefers other silverbacks - the answer is simply don't watch Momo. However, it is ignorant to compare animals and even more ignorant to judge that animal by human standards. Genki has done a wonderful job socializing Momotaro and Momo had given her children. They have done each other good. It’s lovely that Momo continues to develop his social skills as he interacts with his maturing family. It’s also cool how the whole family visited the second ground so when Gentaro spends time there he will not associate it always with a solitary experience. Probably a nice change of scenery for the whole family with a new space to explore. I’m sure Momo has done a full patrol and scoped the entire place out. Genki AND Momotaro have had things happen in their lives that probably left them upset, lonely, afraid, and confused. Just like human beings, they have complicated emotions, fears, and memories. He’s just doing the best he can like any other living being.
If you google ‘gorillas who were taught sign language’ (or words to that effect) you’ll find some fascinating stuff. Coco (or KoKo?) is probably the most well known. She would describe her feelings and emotions using sign language (a modified form of signing based on ASL) Example, wanting to have her own baby (she lost 2) How she felt when her kitten got run over…..Just fascinating (and sad 😢). Gorillas are so incredibly intelligent.

Even in the wild, and just like humans, gorillas' life events early on shape their personalities in adulthood. Perhaps Momotaro isn't as playful and affectionate as other silverbacks. But I think he's done a wonderful job, especially since he hadn't been around little gorillas before. And, I find that Momotaro excels at being protective of his family. I, personally, will never forget how Momotaro went to Genki, who was holding baby Kintaro, to keep them safe during an earthquake tremor. Thank you, GL, for all the information you imparted during today's video. Much appreciated!
I agree. He has done a wonderful job seeing how he started out not on equal footing. You're right, he's a great protector! I've watched and perhaps you have seen the videos as well, several times when Kintaro was younger and in a different part of the enclosure away from the others, he would get scared or see something, and start screaming while running towards Genki. Gentaro and Momotaro, in tandem, would respond. Once I saw Gentaro leap up and grab the top of the roof, pull himself up and pace back and forth looking around from that high vantage point while Momo made sure that Kintaro got to Genki and then he began a perimeter search. In some places he stood on his hind legs, but he hurried all around and ended up in under where Gentaro was pacing back and forth looking. It was amazing to watch! I've always felt that Momo loved G & K though he didn't know how to show it. I so wanted him to be more demonstrative with Gentaro. I always felt that Gentaro needed so much more since he had to be taken at birth and did not have the bond of breastfeeding with Genki. Ah, maybe I'm being too much of a human - but that's how I always felt. Seasons, hope you are well!

The story of this family made me fall in love with all of them. So much love, that I visited them in Japan last September! I feel so privileged and lucky to see them live. Beautiful family!

Thank you for this video. Understanding backgrounds has helped in observing behavior, It sounds like observing this family has helped a lot of people. My husband questions why I look at these videos so much. I point out the similarities between humans and gorillas in relationships and behavior and the influence one generation has on another. I also think it is cute how Gentaro and Kintaro “run to Mama” for the least little injury for sympathy. I told him it reminds me of him!
I'm really happy to hear that Momo has continued to grow and learn more about how to function in a gorilla family. I knew about his early life challenges so I never faulted him for it, but it did make me worry that Gentaro maybe should not be considered for breeding since Momo's social growth was so stunted. However, if Momo is doing better, then Gentaro can still learn plenty from him!

This is beautiful that Momotaro and his family has a be healing affect on Japanese families. I sense this family has helped people world wide. My motto is to not judge or presume to know . There is always more to understand and we humans can contribute with love and compassion for all. I have observed Momotaro growing and it is quite beautiful. Genki girl has a kind wise disposition. Thankyou for telling us Momotaros background, I did know Genki's life b4 momotaro. I wondered about why he seemed detached from the others. He is doing better these days.❤
GL you can't forget to mention why Momotaro grew up without a father. His father died before he was born. I have seen videos where he was under 5 years old with Mama Momoko. He was so cute walking through enclosures like a little silverback. 🐒🦍😍 And I also saw some short videos of him as a teenager. Then he quickly became a silverback. Wasn't Momotaro in a Bachelor group or something like that when he was a teenager?
In December of 2008 when Momotaro was 8 years old, he moved back to Ueno from Chiba. His mother had another breeding recommendation - this time with Haoko. Momotaro left Ueno at age 10 for Kyoto for his own breeding recommendation with Genki. Momotaro had only lived with his mother until he arrived at Kyoto and met Genki. You are right, Biju died October 1999 - Momo was born in July 2000 at Ueno. (GL did mention that Momo never met his father.) Unfortunately, Japan has never had bachelor groups. I love them all , Kintaro is the lucky 🍀 one, he hadn't gone through anything, and is a little spoiled.He has had both parents, and mom has spoiled him and has had a good brother who has spoiled him with playing,his dad lets him get by with a lot, so he has spoiled him to in his own way. Momentaro is doing his best, for how his life was before he had his own family and is still maturing and learning, he is doing better lately, Gentaro is the one now with problems of growing up and hormonal changes, that can get worse, because he has those feelings and don't have a wife,he wants to move on with his life but has no way to escape, maybe the new ground will help, but he can't be completely happy until he has his own wife and later kids,he will be a good father,he has experience, with Kintaro and I know he doesn't want to be like his dad, Gentaro has had a rough life starting out and after Kintaro was born , Gentaro at 7 years old,2 years older than Kintaro is now,was pretty much forced to grow up, and mom, gave him less attention.then even ignored,then got no love from parents, but things got a little better, Gentaro and Genki has had a little contact, but it has been awhile, and the relationship is a little restrained.

I love that Gentaro still plays with his little brother Kintaro. It’s just adorable seeing them so happy. These kinds of interactions are so very important for their development. Poor Momotaro never had this, the opportunity to play with other gorillas, young gorillas when he was growing up. GL’s explanation as to why Momo can be selfish and doesn’t have the best social skills makes sense. 6 years old is very young for a gorilla to be on their own. That’s just one year older than Kinny so Momo wouldn’t have been much bigger in size 😢 I’m glad he has his own family now ❤

I'm happy you spoke about Momotaro's past life, it really helps other people who don't know, misjudge him and unfairly compare him to other silverbacks to understand him and why he is the way he is, it's not his fault but a consequence of past traumatic experiences. Genki has done a wonderful job socializing Momotaro and Momo had given her children. They have done each other good. It’s lovely that Momo continues to develop his social skills as he interacts with his maturing family. It’s also cool how the whole family visited the second ground so when Gentaro spends time there he will not associate it always with a solitary experience. Probably a nice change of scenery for the whole family with a new space to explore. I’m sure Momo has done a full patrol and scoped the entire place out. Genki AND Momotaro have had things happen in their lives that probably left them upset, lonely, afraid, and confused. Just like human beings, they have complicated emotions, fears, and memories. He’s just doing the best he can like any other living being.
If you google ‘gorillas who were taught sign language’ (or words to that effect) you’ll find some fascinating stuff. Coco (or KoKo?) is probably the most well known. She would describe her feelings and emotions using sign language (a modified form of signing based on ASL) Example, wanting to have her own baby (she lost 2) How she felt when her kitten got run over…..Just fascinating (and sad 😢). Gorillas are so incredibly intelligent.

Even in the wild, and just like humans, gorillas' life events early on shape their personalities in adulthood. Perhaps Momotaro isn't as playful and affectionate as other silverbacks. But I think he's done a wonderful job, especially since he hadn't been around little gorillas before. And, I find that Momotaro excels at being protective of his family. I, personally, will never forget how Momotaro went to Genki, who was holding baby Kintaro, to keep them safe during an earthquake tremor. Thank you, GL, for all the information you imparted during today's video. Much appreciated!
I agree. He has done a wonderful job seeing how he started out not on equal footing. You're right, he's a great protector! I've watched and perhaps you have seen the videos as well, several times when Kintaro was younger and in a different part of the enclosure away from the others, he would get scared or see something, and start screaming while running towards Genki. Gentaro and Momotaro, in tandem, would respond. Once I saw Gentaro leap up and grab the top of the roof, pull himself up and pace back and forth looking around from that high vantage point while Momo made sure that Kintaro got to Genki and then he began a perimeter search. In some places he stood on his hind legs, but he hurried all around and ended up in under where Gentaro was pacing back and forth looking. It was amazing to watch! I've always felt that Momo loved G & K though he didn't know how to show it. I so wanted him to be more demonstrative with Gentaro. I always felt that Gentaro needed so much more since he had to be taken at birth and did not have the bond of breastfeeding with Genki.

Thank you for such a great video. I am glad to see Momotaro maturing and even though he is a little reserved, he is very thoughtful and intelligent. He’s always looking out for his family. I’ll never forget the video of whe they were inside during an earthquake and the way he ushered Genki out of harms way and made sure everyone was ok was so beautiful. I could watch it over and over.
Momo and Genki have both had tough times in their lives and are unfairly treated by some who don't know the full story I hope that together they can overcome their traumas.

Thank you for this video. Understanding backgrounds has helped in observing behavior, It sounds like observing this family has helped a lot of people. My husband questions why I look at these videos so much. I point out the similarities between humans and gorillas in relationships and behavior and the influence one generation has on another. I also think it is cute how Gentaro and Kintaro “run to Mama” for the least little injury for sympathy. I told him it reminds me of him!

I'm really happy to hear that Momo has continued to grow and learn more about how to function in a gorilla family. I knew about his early life challenges so I never faulted him for it, but it did make me worry that Gentaro maybe should not be considered for breeding since Momo's social growth was so stunted. However, if Momo is doing better, then Gentaro can still learn plenty from him!

There's so much pathos and triumph over adversity in this family's story that it is no surprise so many people love them.
This is beautiful that Momotaro and his family has a be healing affect on Japanese families. I sense this family has helped people world wide. My motto is to not judge or presume to know . There is always more to understand and we humans can contribute with love and compassion for all. I have observed Momotaro growing and it is quite beautiful. Genki girl has a kind wise disposition. She is so honest with her expressions as we all get exasperated at times. Her dirt tossing and facial expressions make me laugh. Great mother with so much patience. GL you can't forget to mention why Momotaro grew up without a father. His father died before he was born.
I have seen videos where he was under 5 years old with Mama Momoko. He was so cute walking through enclosures like a little silverback. 🐒🦍😍
And I also saw some short videos of him as a teenager. Then he quickly became a silverback.
Wasn't Momotaro in a Bachelor group or something like that when he was a teenager?
In December of 2008 when Momotaro was 8 years old, he moved back to Ueno from Chiba. His mother had another breeding recommendation - this time with Haoko. Momotaro left Ueno at age 10 for Kyoto for his own breeding recommendation with Genki. Momotaro had only lived with his mother until he arrived at Kyoto and met Genki. You are right, Biju died October 1999 - Momo was born in July 2000 at Ueno. (GL did mention that Momo never met his father.) Unfortunately, Japan has never had bachelor groups. Happy gorilla watching 🦍

I love them all , Kintaro is the lucky 🍀 one, he hadn't gone through anything, and is a little spoiled.He has had both parents, and mom has spoiled him and has had a good brother who has spoiled him with playing,his dad lets him get by with a lot, so he has spoiled him to in his own way.
Momentaro is doing his best, for how his life was before he had his own family and is still maturing and learning, he is doing better lately, Gentaro is the one now with problems of growing up and hormonal changes, that can get worse, because he has those feelings and don't have a wife,he wants to move on with his life but has no way to escape, maybe the new ground will help, but he can't be completely happy until he has his own wife and later kids,he will be a good father,he has experience, with Kintaro and I know he doesn't want to be like his dad, Gentaro has had a rough life starting out and after Kintaro was born , Gentaro at 7 years old,2 years older than Kintaro is now,was pretty much forced to grow up, and mom, gave him less attention.then even ignored,then got no love from parents, but things got a little better, Gentaro and Genki has had a little contact, but it has been awhile, and the relationship is a little restrained.

Viele Menschen vergleichen Momotaro mit anderen männlichen Gorillas in Bezug auf sein Verhalten und seine Handlungen. Er wird tatsächlich weniger Kontakt zu seiner Familie haben. Das liegt vor allem an seiner Erziehung. Ich wollte, dass alle das verstehen. Er bemüht sich jeden Tag darum, ein guter Vater zu sein. Er verließ seine Eltern im Alter von sechs Jahren und lebte seitdem weitgehend allein. Als er in den Zoo von Kyoto kam, traf er zum ersten Mal auf ein Gorillaweibchen, und jetzt hat er eine Familie.

I love that Gentaro still plays with his little brother Kintaro. It’s just adorable seeing them so happy. These kinds of interactions are so very important for their development. Poor Momotaro never had this, the opportunity to play with other gorillas, young gorillas when he was growing up. GL’s explanation as to why Momo can be selfish and doesn’t have the best social skills makes sense. 6 years old is very young for a gorilla to be on their own. That’s just one year older than Kinny so Momo wouldn’t have been much bigger in size 😢 I’m glad he has his own family now ❤
