  • It’s really hot & humid in Kona, a far cry from the dull grey British weather, but how different really is it for athletes to deal with on race day?! With the help of ‪@precisionfandh‬ Heather compares sweat loss between the two locations and what it would mean for performance!

7:01 "If you're going to drink something, weigh yourself holding the bottle." So simple that it's genius.
    Thanks Emily, Andy and Heather.

Very Interesting video. Fuel and Hydration for me always tricky. I constantly try different things in training. Now lets see how race day goes. Of course I am just an age grouper but always want to preform well in my own race. Cheers

Intesting video,as last Sunday ran a cross country in 24oC heat, 2:06 and I noticed how long after drinking before intended to go to the toilet.
Be interesting to see how I feel after Half Marathon this Sunday in cooler weather.

How did you determine the amount of salt you'd lost in your sweat?

It’s precision hydrations business, they have patches you can order to measure your sodium loss

Also some tri/cycling/running stores do sweat testing. Playtri near me does sweat testing for $100

As a Texan, once aclimated 90F is tolerable, 100 is like an oven, and 108 highs are comical, and then I remember deserts exist with 120F weather so I am good 😆.

Great video, but could you please cover how you knew about the salt content of the sweat please?

When you calculated the pre/post run weight differences, did you also account for the amount of water consumed in both runs? Did you consume the same amount of hydration in both runs?

So to avoid hyponatremia, and dehydration, would it be best to always hydrate with something like nuun electrolytes during workout, as opposed to plain water? I can’t stomach super sugary stuff like Gatorade or Powerade, but slightly flavored stuff works for me.

My strategy has been to drink when thirsty and take on enough fuel and salt not to bonk or cramp and I thought that was good enough. Now I see it could be sub-optimal and there could be room for improvement if I put time and energy into refinement. I personally don’t do well in really hot weather and regardless of the amount of water, salt, and carbs I take on my performance suffers dramatically even though I would rank myself as a heavy sweater. What defines the upper temperature/humidity limits for good performance?

Wearing the same clothes in two different climate zones may seem unfair. You would not wear shorts & a t-shirt in Finland in Januari jogging through knee deep snow.
