- Though I show how I use my solar power. Its not the best but its how I use what I got. This is 1600 watts at 12 volts. Today 2/28/13 I was getting 85.1 amps going into my battery bank. The battey bank is 16 twelve volt 100ah batteries. I run my whole house on solar with the exception of 240 volt items, stove ect. Hope you like
Here is a link to my wind turbine

this set up is like mine on the fences.
absolute gem of a solar array. morbidly i get very exited having the sun centering on my panels and my meters get a serious boot up the arse. FREE POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!
You see like an intelligent person with a lot invested in money and self education. I enjoyed your video, but I have to make a critical suggestion. That is that you never run your panels directly into the battery bank. Your voltage output is too high to consider it CCCV healthy. Plenty of 100 amp controllers on the market to take care of your total needs. Better to spend that money now, than on prematurely failed batteries.
You are one genius man with a man-cave that can proudly be called "All powered by Me"! America needs more people like you and should you ever decide to run for oval office, you have my vote. Keep up the great job and enjoy your well harvested power.
The secret here, you have done electronics, and that make it possible for you. Thanks for sharing.
Great video. My next home is going to be "off grid " . Thanks for sharing.
I like the way you have these set up - it almost makes a kind of solar canopy!
You're a busy man, lots of work and money went into this system. Kudos
well done...i liked the way you ran the wire cable from bat to bat.....without cutting....great idea thank you
Brother man.. GREAT JOB!! Now add wind turbine power to your battery bank. Excellent job... well done young man.
You, my friend, are doing exactly what I want to do. Just awesome.
I live in NJ and we currently rent but, God willing, we will own a house in the next year or so. In NJ, electric is incredibly expensive. If it's even possible to knock down electric usage by 10%, this would be totally worth it. Excellent setup and explanation. Thanks man.
Pretty sweet setup. City won't let put panels on the roof. I'd probably build a fire box for those batteries though. Domino effect can be brutal.
Thanks for sharing. Great set up.
48 Amps!Sounds like an electrical fire waiting to happen
I am impressed! This is what you have to do to aggressivly reduce our dependency on the utilities. I'll bet it was'nt cheap.
Great setup you have there! Thanks for sharing.
Great video. Thank you for sharing.
Very nice set up!!! I like the dedicated box for the solar aray n the way you just transferred over the leads u wanted to use from grid to solar!!! Once again very nice
Great setup, thanks for sharing.
thank you so much for putting up this video and for answering some comments I learn a lot.. great job.
That's really cool how you set them up on the fence to maximize the space you had. Thanks for sharing!
Nice setup. thanks for sharing..
Interesting video, great setup! Thanks very much for posting it, it was very informative.
This is an amazing video Brother !! Thanks for sharing !!
It even looks like you understand wiring code!!. Great job! , Thanks for putting this vid up , Ideas like this let me help my wife understand. Thanks again. Peace
No matter what anyone else says, you're creating power for free(after initial investment) and living large at that! More power to you bro! Red green, blue wires who cares, you did it, you know what you did and it works , Awesome job!
Awesome setup! I have a solar powered shed and brought some 12V to the house to charge cell phones and other small devices but nothing as elaborate as what you have. Keep on keeping on and making improvements. I admire your direction sir.
I like your battery connection copper lug idea.
Great job, and great video. I’m very impressed.
Good for you! People this is the way forward.
popoqwer Its fun. But the day i will have Victory is when I tell the electric company to come get there Bull S**t meter off my House.
the HVAC system.is still on the grid box right?
Very Insightful and Helpful vid !! I live rural - so this will work well for my horse barn and shop across the property without having to suck on muni's "main line" lol!!
Very nice. Thank you for your video.
AbuGrabIt Thank you guys for liking my videos in ruff form. I dont know much about video editing. and i know youtube can be tuff on comments.
Excellent set-up.......congratulations! I love the way you can split electricity from the grid and from your Solar panels !
You've got the best solar panel! I better start building mine and start saving too...
great system love seing more ppl heading in the self sufficent independent route
Finally a video that shows what is actually running off the solar system lol. I've been trying to see if it is worth the investment and this video definitely shows that it's worth it.
Awesome setup. Great use of DC to power the LEDs directly.
You are a mad scientist!! i need to follow what you got going on..
It's amazing what you have done. If you replace your stoves with gas stoves and you just put wet clothes on a rope and not use the dryer, you can actually just unplug from the grid completely.
fuertesyrobustos True but the dryer helps save time, plus makes the clothes look and feel nicer. If I had all of that at my house all on solar, especially in the kitchen like that, it would never be a problem to pay the electric company for using the dryer. I want to make any small solar setup to get started and then grow from there.
fuertesyrobustos Thanks and yep thats what i would love to do, but my wife likes the convenience.
Sweet setup! Great work. Thanks for sharing.
great job
thank you for sharing this, Its amazing, Im interested on solar cells I want to put some in my house. It's scary because I have no experience but this video is inspiring.
Wow! Great setup! I wish I was your neighbor! I could learn a lot from you and buy your extra power! Lol
wow!amazing I wish u can meet with you that will the greatest moment in my life, well done
Man I wish you were my neighbor! I'm trying to learn more about this and while watching videos is cool it would be nice to learn hands on (plus you have a pool and a bunch of cool toys, but that's beside the point.) Anyway thanks for sharing your awesome and inspirational setup.
If I read your comment correct, you spent around 3K on your system. You did good. How much is your electric bill? Thanks for being so helpful. This is one of the most practical systems that I have seen.
+SuperCal you also can got one
i like your set-up my house in Japan has solar panels that where on by a major contractor but i am envious or your DIY set-up very cool!
Very informative, I'm interested in solar but haven't taken the first step. Thanks for sharing!
excellent! small and out of site.
Man you wrapped at 9:59. Nice work!
Gonna try to apply some of this to our cabin in southern Indiana. We have the benefit of being in an area where there are also a wealth of springs from Karst topography. throw all this together and maybe a small LP tank and there isn't much need to go into town.
Great set up you must be really proud well done
That's a real nice solar setup you have :)
good work, that is exactly what i have in mind....
you have a good set up there, ive just learned something, thanks
Thanks for sharing!
Alan
Thanks thanks for the help I want to do this my self.
Man..I love it! I'm in the process or gathering my panels, inverters, ect. I bet even on an overcast day with your current battery bank. your sitting NICE.
Kenneth N. Amend Hi Kenneth, The system has been good to me. Thanks for liking it.
Awesome, you're a genius and put it into action, very impressed
this is one awesome setup well done sir
I really enjoyed your video. I thought you video was straight forward and very clearly stated. Thanks man. I will have to ask you some questions when I start to set up my solar system. Thanks again.
good video. I like how you went over everything quickly, in order, and used the proper terminology. Very informative and nicely done.
I liked this video, you did a great job. Your setup is impressive. Thanks for sharing.
I admire your setup. I've been talkig to my wife about making a backup solar system.
Some great ideas you have.
Dude that is great! I would definitely get a charge controller on those bigger panels or you run the risk of a battery fire. I love how you just ripped the romex from the grid and said bye bye lol 👍
sweetest video on solar so far
I love your set up. I a just getting my feet wet, so to say. I have built a little portable unit on a dolly-it's a 50 W monocrystalline with a cheapie charge controller..I hate that one and am trying to figure out which one to replace it with. I only have a 12 V deep cycle battery. I use it for things like heat mats and grow lights in the shed or when our power goes out it charges my phone and powers the TV and a light. Thank you for the video. Some day I hope to be as self sufficient as possible with solar and wind.
"The dryer is 220, so that sucks" made me lol. Nice video man
Funny thing is you use an electric dryer instead of just hanging them in the sun!
Well the hanging clothes would block the solar panels!! duh :)
Excellent! from England where we don't get much sun! we have wind generators here lol
Hi Philip,
I am from the UK too. For solar to work best, you need lots of sunshine, however as long as you have day light, the solar panels still charge!!
Nice video man, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing!
Great video,lot's of info.answered a lot of question's I had from watching other video's. Thanx :) saved/shared
Outstanding set up
You are one smart dude!
Nice setup! That's a cool place. Like how all the batteries were all on one wire.
off grid kid Hi and thanks for noticing that because that took a long time heating and bending all those terminals, skinning all that wire just where the terminals contact, i was on my knees bending over that battery bank for 12 hours doing that. It was the hardest part of the whole setup. my back was hurting.
Good things are worth the extra time.
cool system dude, thanks for sharing!

Thanks for running us through your rad setup! Your family should be proud. Wish you would have toured us through your chosen battery bank products... Im sure youve researched enough about batteries by now! Point of contention, Im a little disturbed by your green plastic "cook pot". You deserve the best, get yourself something made of glass instead of fluorescent plastic. Most of all, even if u keep the plastic "cook pot", please get yourself a glass pull, never use a metal or plastic one.
And strongly consider a solar powered vaporiser... why use gas? Vapor Brothers makes good wood and bamboo products from well resourced forests.
EG Murray Hi Murray, I'm a little confused. what green cook pot? there on the kitchen counter is a stainles and black rice steamer. maybe it was the poor lighting.
I was referring, as delicately as possible, to your green bong. You deserve better than to imbibe all that nastily decaying, BPA, etc plastic. Excessive heat and excessive cold (ice cubes) all further an already non-ideal experience. If you're not a juvenile boy, than get a real glass piece with a non metal (ceramic or solid glass) pull already.
You ARE the man!!!!:-)
you're an inspiration man! for really
Man, you've got a lot of stuff on your system. Thanks for the tour as it's valuable information that I sincerely appreciate. Keep up the good innovation. The comment on Pool safety should prompt a revisit on placement. Lawsuits can be devastating.
Charles Martin Hi Charles, Thanks. It makes me happy someone else appreciate my work. I feel like i let everyone down without another video in over 2 years. however I have a cool video on a homemade windturbine. here on youtube. ruclips.net/video/gENJOebzbg4/видео.html
It's not perfect, but you have made such an INCREDIBLE effort than most of us have ever tried. I bet you learned a tremendous amount of things while putting this together. Way to go!!! I love the Morningstar controllers. I think I am going to look into getting one of those if I ever get the money to try one of these projects in the future.
What a great job!!!
Very nice, great job man.
You should turn your guest house into a green house and grow your own food and you'll be almost completely self sufficient
simply amazing
Thank you for the video
85. 1 amps x by 12.7 volts = 1080 watts that's with the 20% loss factored in. Ever time you hook a panel in parallel you add the Amps so the main wire that carries the Amps has to be big enough to handle that Amp each panel is producing 6 amps and 19 panels would make 114 amps on a sunny day and more at -40f because of voltage increase in cold weather voltage could increase by 1.2% which increases the wattage which makes up for some of the 20% loss. Who says solar panels make less power in winter was wrong they make more in cold weather but have less sun time that is the only reason for loss.
Nice setup man! Nice digs too! ;-)
Very nice. I guess for some start out slow and try to run a complete tv, and entertainment center and go from there.
Very cool, very nice, I like.
Those batteries will fail at some point...live for today my brother...u r brave!
eggselent! im doing something similar right now but you've given me a couple good ideas! keep up the good work..............
Excellent video!!!
hi sparky!!
you da man!!
seriously, you're solar set is great
good for you
peace
This is awesome. And over 2 years old. How about an update? I would enjoy hearing about how the system is going and any problems to avoid. Thanks for sharing!
Nice! I like how you used the fence, the single cable for the batteries was very innovative. You must have a dump load to regulate the power level to those batteries? Impressive work, subbed.
***** I watched the video again, he has a manual switch to disconnect the panels that are directly wired to the batteries. Some types of charge controllers (my xantrex c40) have the optional dump load. I think its more commonly used for a wind turbine.
One of the coolest ideas I've seen people do is to replace 1 or both elements in their hot water tank and with the "dump" load (excess power when batteries are full) and they use that to preheat or heat their hot water fully if they have enough panels that it's common. Farmers use it for just that a lot also. Or straight to a smaller inverter thatd charge your Dewalt cordless etc? Even a 12volt bilge pump to water your garden w a rain water tank. Just had to be something that won't need a ton of power and that doesn't need to be consistent
Super Great Job man!
thank u for sharing
good job dude very nice you could run the dryer and stove off gas
Hi, I like the commitment you have made. I also like the led tubes. Can you provide a link for those? On a different note. You are using way to small cable. While I know that a amperage chart may show you can use that guage. But you are experiencing huge loses. I say this as an Electrical Engineer. Other wise. Good job.
This is amazing! I've been trying to get my family ready for crap hit the fan situations. Looking at everything going on in the world is a wake up call for me.
I've been thinking a lot about solar, but all this feels over my head since I'm not science minded. Will you please help a woman out!? I would love love love for you to do a video for beginners and walk us through step by step with a list of what we need to make an off grid power set up.
I live in Maryland and in the last 3 weeks alone we've lost power 4 times due to storms.
If you can't make the video would you please point me in the right direction. Thank you so much. This is so inspiring!
Felicia Harris Hi Felicia, I will try and make such a video. But can't promise when. It will be a much longer video of course , maybe two parts. Its fun. But the day i will have Victory is when I tell the electric company to come get there Bull S**t meter off my House. Thanks for the comment,
very nice .......... thanks
