  • My name is Carson Sleep, I’m 23 years old and am a 6th generation rancher on the Sleep Ranch.
Our ranch is located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where my family settled and started ranching in 1883.
I work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, and my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town. We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.

I’m curious how much your local fire department charged you to respond to this incident. I recently found out my township fire department was using a contracted billing service to charge for every possible thing with every response. This is above and beyond the property taxes I pay dutifully to be protected by this volunteer fire service. Much like the county police, every possible avenue for profit is being exploited at my expense, even though my property taxes have increased every year!

Why swath it and not combine the wheat!? We use to do 100 acres of winter wheat but combine it in July!? We never fed wheat due to swelling, we would use spelts for feed!? Maybe a different strain of wheat!? We planted red winter wheat in the fall! Yeah those field fires can be a bugger! Hope all is well! Forest service knows what to do! Lol!! Had you lost your swather in the fire I’d suggest a Massey Ferguson or New Holland as a replacement!

Haha we used to have a new holland and they worked too! Got the John Deere since dealers are close by and service is usually quick but not always haha we have combined it in the pasts and then bailed the leftovers but we’d have to hire someone to combine it for us and that’s just another expense:/ might be worth looking into again for another year though!
