The two diseases that Tim references -- Kaposi('s) Sarcoma, a kind of cancer marked externally by dark skin lesions, and PCP (Pneumosocystis Pneumonia) -- were probably the most common, and most lethal opportunistic infections among gay men during the first decade of the AIDS epidemic. It's worth remembering that HIV stands for "human immunodeficiency virus," i.e. a virus that knocks our the body's immune defenses and leaves it vulnerable to potentially fatal disease(s). (AIDS stands for "Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.") Sorry if most of you already know this, but these days, one can't be sure how much of the history people know. Thank you.

I really liked that Tim finally started to speak up for himself in this episode. Also, some people may not know that the McCarthy senate hearings accusing people of being communists or gay were televised live on TV for all of America to watch. These accused people (many were celebrities and high-ranking government officials) had to defend themselves during these hearings. Afterwards, most lost their jobs and celebrities were blackballed by Hollywood.

Wow, we did not know that! That really puts things into perspective and shows how bleak the situation was back then :/

There was a very good documentary many years ago about the McCarthy hearings, "Point of Order." Don't know if/where it's available, but it has some amazing footage and would make a good companion view to "Fellow Travelers," which skilfully mixes historical characters -- McCarthy, Cohn, Schine, Joe Alsop -- with the fictional ones.

despite segregation, black musicians were frequently hired to perform in white-only venues. jazz, blues, and big band music, genres heavily influenced or pioneered by black Americans, were immensely popular among white audiences but seen as a fad or taboo. even though these black performers were allowed to play, they were subject to severe restrictions. they typically had to use separate entrances, often the back or side door, and were barred from using the same restrooms, dining areas, or even utensils as the white patrons. they would have to leave immediately after their performances.

Tim is most definitely THE victim of this series so far. He's at Hawk's beck and call, and Hawk takes full advantage of him. We haven't yet seen much of Hawk's life, outside of work and Tim, but I can only imagine the daily struggles he faces himself as a gay man at this time. It doesn't excuse his actions, but you can almost understand why he is the way he is.
I really love Frankie. He's the only one who is completely unashamed of who he is. Frankie said it perfectly to Marcus when he asked if Marcus could handle him. Marcus may think that he pulls all the strings in their relationship, but I think Frankie is the one with all the power. It's the power you can only achieve when you are your authentic self. It's brilliant.

Totally agree, so far it seems Hawk is mostly taking advantage of Tim. And it’s sad to see that so many years after, Tim so easily falls back into his old behaviour when Hawk visits him. Hawk may be in love and wants to be with Tim, but he doesn’t treat him that way unfortunately.

Enjoying your review/commentary on this heartwrenching look back at the cost of love we endured. The relationships written and acted in this series were so believable for the period that one is constantly adoring and/or admonishing as each episode unfolds. Unfortunately, Emmy voters snubbed this from the awards deserved by every leading actor, especially Bailey and Boomer. Please fasten your seatbelts, Panos and Matt, and be aware that the upcoming five episodes, especially Episode 8, require Kleenex nearby. And sadly yes, the storylines of Cohn, Shine, and McCarthy are historically accurate. And yes, I gladly hit the like button and subscribed.

The writer/SAG strike pushed Fellow Travelers into this year's Emmy race and the nominations haven't happened yet. Showtime & Paramount+ are campaigning HARD for this show

@@ShelbyBaby27 Happily to be in error on the Emmy mention. After reading your reply I realized I instead meant my snub comments on the Gloden Globes - series, and only Boomer was nominated - both gay-themed nominations lost to and not being funny, "Beef". Thanks for the correction and glad to know a campaign is underway for some Fellow Travelers well deserved Emmy recognition.

Hey @chiefd3 no they are not snubbed they have submitted for 23 categories for the coming Emmy’s in sep.
I think you hit it confused with the Emmy’s that happened earlier this year becoz of sag aftra strike it got postponed. Pls comment after knowing . Like literally the cast have been doing campaign (press tour) for Emmy’s FYC(for your consideration) and Jonathan Bailey is considered to be front runner along with Robert Downey junior. So pls don’t confuse the Emmy’s that happened earlier this year with the one that’s going to happen in sep and for which Fellow travelers have been doing so much press tour (are you even watching their panel discussion videos🤷🏼‍♀️)
      🤷🏼‍♀️
Guys FT has submitted 23 categories for the Emmy’s on sep 15th and Emmy nominee announcement is on July 17th we will know whose nominated

The story goes like that Marcus n hawk start from the same point it's where they end in the journey.
    Jean kurr did marry senator.
Cohn and sheein were close friends.
Senator smith Lucy s dad s character is based on a real character aswell.

Tim understands the danger, but he is frustrated by the life being forced on them, and he is frustrated that Hawk is happy to go along with the status quo. Tim is more radical and Hawk is conservative.
Marcus and Hawkins both are trying to protect themselves and are not as brave or idealistic as Frankie and Tim. Marcus and Hawkins are older and used to working to protect themselves. Frankie and Tim push for more, because they know they deserve more. They are younger and not as jaded as Hawk and Marcus.

@@therainbowreels the grieving part for both of them is not about trauma it’s about their love for their character especially Jonny.
You’d understand why in the next 4 ep.

Also Skippy just turned 94 on June 6th🥹
Also many won’t like hawk I didn’t as well. But the last ep aired on Dec 14. Now he’s grown on me . Only reason is hearing what Matt , Ron (showrunner & I hope you know he was director of Philadelphia which gave Tom hanks his Oscar) hearing it all made me “SEE” hawkins in a different light.
Cant say much coz u haven’t seen ep 8 but just know that Right when he’s so ready to be with Tim ….
And u’d understand with the last episodes name what I mean..
Also when Tim says three words to Hawk now a 60 year old man wants to tell something but he doesn’t coz if he tells why he can’t go back…. (I wudnt have known if Showrunner didn’t tell that)
Just hinting this coz when you see that ep you will understand. And remember my comment.
Also highly suggest to WATCH THE CAST TALK ABOUT IT COZ LIKE JONATHAN BAILEY (not to forget he underwent homophobia incident in dc in oct in a coffee shop the day after presenting HrC impact award to Matt bomer his dear friend. He’s still shaken by that incident )SAID after he won critics choice award in front of the whole of Hollywood “In his speech he said: “For many, it’s an education, but for us, it’s a vital truth. This series is a much-needed reminder that LGBTQ+ people have always existed, mostly hidden. They have always been fighting for an easier life for the generations that followed. So I thank those who came before me, who created a world where I can stand here today and win an award for telling their story. The character I play, Tim, I’ll carry him forever. His love story with Hawk teaches us to tell the special people in our lives that we love them before it’s too late.” ‘So to my Fellow Travelers family, to all the people who lost their lives and loves in the ’80s and ’90s and to every LGBTQ+ person living in a bigoted community, which still surround us, this is for you.’
He also sent love to his 93-year-old grandmother who watched the whole series from start to end & who was as the same age as Timothy🥲.
I never understand hawkins decisions but NOW I’ve grown to understand him more now.
      Becoz of watching the interviews.
      Which btw are 💛
They choked up talking about the finale in tvline.

I felt for Hawk in this episode.
I'm an American who lives on the east coast. Washington D.C. to Rehoboth Beach DE is roughly 6hrs drive round trip. Hawk isn't taking this road trip with someone he kinda likes! Hawk asked Tim out for supper (early dinner) in episode 1 and Tim turned him down. Now Tim has the right to decline, but he doesn't bring it up until now.
    Q. Why doesn't Tim ask Hawk out?
Hawk must have felt blindsided by Tim's demands but he makes them happen only for Tim to cause a scene at the restaurant. Hawk must have been starving too 😂
I think this episode exposes a flaw in Tim. He heavy handedly places demands on Hawk to fix and/or provide when they should be collaborating.

Unfortunately, I became quite frustrated with Hawkins dominant personality, which is why I stopped watching the series back then. I also felt like they didn't change the appearance and ages of the characters enough over the long period of time the series is set in, which was confusing in terms of the timeline. While Fellow Travelers isn't for me, your Young Royals content made me really fond of you guys, and I continue to enjoy your discussions and insightful style of analysis. 💜💜💜
