Nice video! The lighting makes the landscape have a wonderful texture here, especially the mountains in the first half of the video. The French border at Le Perthus is very far South, more than most would imagine. I live in the Spanish town of Logroño which is at the same latitude (~42.46º N) and I still live 80 km away from the northern coast at the eastern side of the Pyrenees! The French did a good job widening the A9... Spanish authorities should start widening the stretch between the border and the La Jonquera exit, IIRC the southbound carriageway still is 2 lane wide.
Driving for pleasure is better than driving for necessity. In the USA, driving is not a privilege (like it should be). It is a necessity. When you learn how to drive in the USA as a teenager, you don't learn things like driving through roundabouts, the overtaking rule by using the left overtaking lane to overtake slow-moving vehicles on the motorways and using a three-lane motorway by knowing the lane on the left, and middle lane is for overtaking and the right lane as the slow lane. Also in the USA, parents teach you by passing on their poor driving habits when they teach their kids how to drive. I went through all of that as a teenager when my dad taught me how to drive. Now as a man, I am teaching myself how to drive by watching videos on RUclips about how to drive on roads om the European continent and the UK. Also, I just learned about the driving laws in Europe so I know what to expect. Another nice video, European Roads. I like this one.
Just drove this part 3 weeks ago when having to leave Catalunya and head back north to Germany. Always a pleasure, great ride, however, since péage concession has ended on Spain side there is now much more truck traffic driving at quite high speeds and without too much caution. Felt more comfortable on French side though it is not cheap.
I drove AP-7 all the way from Alicante on this trip, I did notice there was quite a bit more traffic than I experienced on earlier trips. There was a massive traffic jam on AP-7 through Barcelona (in the other direction) when I passed through there.
At 5:28 the bridge of the Figueres-Perpignan High Speed raliway crosses over the motorway. This line was meant to link the Paris-Montpellier-Perpignan and Madrid-Barcelona-Figueres high speed lines in France and Spain respectively, thus creating a direct 300km/h railway corridor between Madrid and Paris. However, the French section between Montpellier and Perpignan is yet to be completed (and there aren't any plans to resume works soon), so international TGV and freight trains are forced to switch to slower conventional lines when they reach Perpignan. And the spanish section between Figueres and Barcelona is completed, but it had its max speed reduced from 300 to 200km/h due to insufficient clearance between tracks. So these 300km/h tracks that we see in the video currently stand as an isolated high-speed section between both countries. Quite a mess from both sides...
There is no motorway that I associate that much with aquired identities as a German living in Spain.
Nice video and beautiful landscapes! I had a schedule trip in June 2020 to go to the Basque Country, Southern France, Andorra and Catalonia, however that trip didn't happen because of the COVID-19 pandemic. We'll see if next year I can make that trip! By the way, have you got some Portuguese footages on your last Summer trip?! If you didn't, it's a real shame, because you have tons of footage from Spain and only one video in Portugal. :(
My father and I drove on the A9 in France and the A7 in Spain from Perpignan to Barcelona in the spring of 1990. This video brought back some great memories. Thank you for this video. Great video as always!
