Enjoyed part 1,the beauty of custom made blocks, slots can accommodate all types of knives as well as sharpening steels.Looking forward to part 2.

Thanks for watching and for the feedback. We debated whether to do this in parts or as one very long video with chapter breaks. What is the general preference? Part 2 should be out before next weekend, if all goes as planed.

Do you have to have a planer and jointer. The block with horizontal slots is very nice. I’d love to make it, but don’t have the equipment mentioned. Of course I’m a beginner in woodworking.

Hi Doris. You could make it without a planer and jointer, but they definitely make it easier. If you have a good hand plane you could join and thickness the boards with that. Or get S4S materials and work with what you get. Just modify the plans to work with your wood thickness. You do need some way of making the grooves. Hope this helps!

l always put my knives in facing up so they dont cut the block

I have a much easier way of making these blocks with no need to having to mess with cutting any grooves.

I’m guessing it involves glueing bits together with slats the thickness of the slots, set to make the knife slots between. That would be one way of doing it.

@@SkyValleyStudio Yes, kind of. Use different sizes and thickness of woods and glue them together so that the slots are already built into the finished block. The only tool you need is a saw.
