This was the best and most real world test out there of them all. Also when your girl went in the kitchen and then out the door I legit thought that was an actual professional commercial for a minute. LOL
@@Titusofthegiant I have 6 pro Tiles, I'll wait for an upgrade for the AirTag because Tile's range is 100 yards while AirTags is not even close to that.
When I bought a Tile starter pack I had Bluetooth connection issues. I like the simplicity of AirTags. Connecting mine was so easy. There are some things Tile does better but I feel more confident in finding my keys with an AirTag. There are many more iPhones out there than there are Tiles to update my AirTag’s location.
To me it’s a no brainer. The range isn’t nearly as far as Tiles ranges are, even if you get the cheaper Tile model it’s still almost a 75% difference. That coupled with Tile having a much louder tone to listen for just makes it an easy choice for me. Oh yeah, and the fact that I can not only find my keys but also use the keychain for those keys to find my phone if that’s what I’m searching for is also huge; at least for me it is. I misplace my phone around my house pretty frequently so the tile product is a big help. Need to grab the thin one for my wallet and I’ll be pretty set.
I appreciate that you went deeper than the "hide and seek" technique used by other reviews. You actually got into the questions that have been on my mind. Will somebody know what to do with these trackers if they see them? Can I count on the benevolence of strangers to help me recover my items? Heck, even though I don't use any Tile devices, I'm considering installing the app just so that I can be a helpful member of the network! I know you were all over the city over a span of days for this one, but it was very appreciated. Thanks, and keep up the good work!
I lost my keys on an airplane and found them in the baggage room at the airport a week later because of tile. Tile leads me right to the room. The airport attendant said there were no keys in the back room. I rang the device & they kindly brought my keys out. Tile is still my ‘finder’ going forward.
Airtags are going to work much better in the long run and in rural areas. Santa Monica is probably a bad test case. Also you can scan an airtag with nfc to get the contact info.
I tested notifications during a recent trip while waiting for my luggage. I could see the location update in Find My, but the notification that my luggage had been found only arrived 30 minutes after I’d recovered it and walked out of the airport. Definitely some work to do in that area.
This was a great informative video! I'm glad you did this. A lot of youtubers I watch talk about how to find them in their homes but not in the outside world. I was torn whether I should get it or not because it's not really a necessity for me as I don't lose my stuff in my house or anywhere. After watching this video, I've made an informed decision not to get it because it's not always a guarantee you'll get it back and reasons I said earlier. I also agree that not everyone will know what to do if they either find an airtag or a tile. For example, I'm not a user of tile so I wouldn't know what to do if I find one.
Great episode. I loved the on-location video. It was refreshing to "get out of the house" and not be in the studio all the time. We have all been spending too much time at home already. I would recommend adding a stick-on label to each tag with your phone number to help get recovery. I'm not sure I would know to upgrade my iOS to be able to return a lost item to someone. Maybe you'll get your keys back when that person eventually upgrades to iOS 14.5+.

Isn't being able to reset them like that also kind of pointless given if someone steals your thing they also get your tracker to use for themselves? With the AirTag you're unable to use them again without being untethered to the AppleID of whoever first set them up. You might get a nice case out of it though I guess lol.
My thoughts: #1 Apple should have added the Airtag functionality sooner, say iOS 14, so that by the time they launched everyone would have already upgraded. #2 Airtags and Tiles should connect to the cellular network and you instantly have worldwide coverage. That was a great review. I have been using Tiles for years. I have replaced 3 Tiles with AirTags on my 2 car’s keys and my house key because I keep them in my front pants pockets and several times I have rested my hand on my pocket and it rang my phone. That is not good when I am in church or at a movie theater or in civic club meeting. I checked with Tile and that feature can’t be turned off. I have a question…what happens if I take one car on a vacation? After 3 days approximately will the AirTag left at home start beeping? Thanks for a great video!
Great review. I have both. The lack of sharing on ArTag is a real pain. That said I agree Tile Pro is still overall a better product as you said. Great review very comprehensive. The only two minor items you didn't cover is Bluetooth range for connection on each tracker. I am finding Tile will connect to the Bluetooth at a greater range then AirTag. The other is that the AppleWatch can find a Tile but not an AirTag! I have to admit I was shocked that the Tile got found first. However, this may be due to the much better range of the tile Bluetooth. You will find a Tile at 200+ feet outdoors and the AirTag is more like 50 feet. So, the odds that someone walks within 50 feet of your device or 200 feet can be a HUGE difference in some locations. Also as of today the spellcheck in iPhone don't know that AirTag is a word! I use Tile slim on my luggage and need to replace them and was considering making a switch to the AirTags. After watching your review I feel like I need to get both a Tile and an AirTag for each piece of luggage and even then I’ll have to just hope for the best. I did use the tile tracker once when I arrived at my home airport and was told my luggage was lost. The tile app did detect my luggage and told me that it was at the airport, but the airport was loud and I could not hear any chime. I wonder if the AirTags precision finder Would have worked better in that case. In the end, the tile app did show the luggage in my neighborhood the next day getting closer and closer to my house just before a FedEx driver delivered it to my house. So it made me feel better knowing that my luggage was in the airport, but other than that the outcome would’ve been no different for me if I did not have the tile on the luggage. I recently returned home from a ~14,000 mile trip. I had one layover in each direction. When I was on the plane, my tile app could not detect the luggage even though it was on board the 777 however, when I was on my connecting flight, I was able to see that my luggage had made it to the connecting airport. When I reach my final destination, the luggage was not immediately detected when I landed but as soon as the luggage carousel started to move, the luggage did show up in my tile app.
If they found a way to build that tech into one of their physical Apple Cards, I’d be willing to pay a small premium to upgrade my physical card to have that in my wallet.
Great idea here! Tile has a Card that fits into a wallet but its still pretty thick. Eventually we'll to a decent sized card like that, but this the start.
I have both a tile and a AirTag on my on my keys, everything else I carry only has an AirTag. The physical button on the tile to find your iPhone has come in handy several times!
The most useful use is if you leave something somewhere and it will jog your memory where you left it. Yea if you drop your keys you may need the precision finding tool.
I have a Tile Pro in my wallet. I was sitting in front of the stage at a comedy club when I sat on my wallet and rang my phone, even though it was on silent mode. That was embarrassing. Now, instead of putting my phone on silent mode, I just turn it off during shows. I hope Tile finds a way to stay in business. I’ve been using Tile Pros for years and they’ve been very helpful keeping track of my car and disabled family.
I feel they'll need to bite the bullet and make use of Apple's Find My network, they're just going to get destroyed by the competition who uses it otherwise (not just Apple). They're too set in their subscription ways which is ironically holding them back from expanding the network to make it more useful to more people.
You have to download the app for tile though, right? Where as the apple tag is part of the iOS. Am I right? What I mean is… in order for the tile network to work, it relies on people downloading the tile app. Where as apple, doesn’t.
Would it make sense to put an airtag on my dog when she’s with my dog sitter? (when i’m away?) or would it be pinging constantly since it would be away from my phone?
Tip: If you have an Airtag or Tile It’s better to attach it to a non-shiny color keychain or case, to make it less visual to attract people or animals to it, cause later it’s better to find your lost item laying somewhere rather than moving with someone or something. The lost Airtag in this video was attached to bright red keychain so people and animals can see that from a distance easily, so my guess is that it might been taken or eaten by an animal or someone liked the red chain and took it & disposed the Airtag .. So in conclusion If it was a black chain then you might have a big chance finding it where you lost it.
Enter Airtag Pro, including speaker grill w/increased loudness, rounded-square design, 400ft range, $49(1) - $150(4) 🤦🏽♂️🤣 I'd like to know if it needs to be/can be paired again after taking the battery out.
That’s cool about there not being a hard reset. I was wondering if someone could just take the battery out, then back in, and pair it to their phone. Very cool, thanks!
Brian do yourself a favor try the Samsung smart tags and you are going to see a difference u r going to love them and your mom and dad will to Hey P.S. stay safe 🙏😎👍👍👍👍
Hi Brian One thing I was thinking about. What about adding an Airtag to a suitcase and having it there on a trip, where you use an Airplane. Must you switch it off (taking the battery out) of the Airtag, or may it be 'online' the hold trip?
I imagine just showing security when you go through the checking area would be enough, same with your phone etc. I've never had to turn my electronic devices off, they just have to be present so they can be scanned separately. Anything with a battery needs to be declared.
I have mounted a few inside tools, but being limited to 16, I can not put them on everything that I would like, so I ordered a bunch of Tile's as well and installed the app for that. They are actually cheaper for me, but not as simple to set up. I live in a big city, so the idea of having a chance to find items after they are stolen seems of utility, and with the high density of phones, the airtags at least seem to be discovered very often.
If my AirTag is on a Hermés chain, I'm going in Swat team style to retrieve it. So did I understand you correctly? You need iOS 14.5 to get the notification, and 13.0 just to ping it, so in other words use 14.5 so you are not stalked and use iOS 12 if you are a thief?
I’ve not had much luck with tile first lot batteries died too soon second lot all gone flat need replacement however was waiting till after COVID ...I’ve ordered 4airtags
Have had nothing but issues with my tiles. So often I push the button to sound my tile and it tells me it can’t connect… in my small house. So often I just have to go digging around. If airTags are more reliable in the long run when I want to find my items it will be better. I don’t care about the fluff if the main functionality doesn’t work.
I have 6 Tiles and I've tested them beyond 100 yards. I supposedly found someone's Tile in a park in a gated community once. I suggest changing out those batteries in 8 months, they do not last 1 yr.
I have both and I find the tiles find my phone feature to be good... when it works. It takes a lot of presses to wake it up. My biggest gripe is that I'm in the UK and tile didn't report accurately when I've lost my keys twice before. I got them back because they were turned into security at work (in a very populated area. I agree the tile is louder, but I've found the airtags loud enough to find my keys ( I misplace them in the house a lot). My apple watch fell off my arm while walking (with headphones on) and I didn't notice until I got home. It was about two hours from when I dropped it to when I found it. I'm shocked no one found it, but "find my" worked perfectly. We'll see how well the tags work. 😂 I know it's just a matter of time
I think that's the biggest issue. Most people testing these things and saying Tile is just as good or better tend to live and test them where they're crazily tech centric... like California. I can't imagine many people in Durham walking around with a Tile or the app for them installed, whereas you're still going to get plenty of people walking around with iPhones which will work with this unless they're running an ancient version of iOS or specifically turned it off. That's where Tile loses, big time. 25million compared to over 1billion network points is a rounding error in the grand scheme.
I want to have a tracker with my enclosed trailer, and to put on some tools in my shop, in a rural location. I still can’t decide which would work for finding thieves? Active rfid would be big and costly.
Hey Brian great video I just recently got my wallet lifted and just wish I had one of the airtags in it so I could find it but even so the size and shape of it would make it to obvious to a thief so I just hope apple really considers a thinner card like version in the future. Thanks for always keeping us updated with your honesty…👍🏼
One thing I am a little unclear on is the network. I assume that anyone with an iPhone is automatically on the network for the Apple brand. But how does the tile one work? Is it only Android users that have the Tile app? If that is the case it seems that iPhone would have a huge Advantage because just the mere fact that you own an iPhone means you are on the network helping. Whereas only fellow tile users are helping in the case of the tile. Is this correct?
Won't the Tile network shrink if more people start using AirTags? The number of Apple devices in the network isn't dependent on the number of AirTags out there.....
Put a tag on my pets collar! Train my dog to return home when she hears the beep. Call it Apple AirLeash.

Don't know if you've been asked or you have answered this question, besides the battery widget do you know if it alerts you of a low battery?
Man your in the SFV! Sherman Oaks, Encino or Tarzana right? I grew in Woodland Hills on Penfield Ave!!
WOW… That’s a great reason to keep your phone updated!… #iAlwaysFeelLikeSomebodysWatchingMeee
I’ve not had much luck with tile first lot batteries died too soon second lot all gone flat need replacement however was waiting till after COVID ...I’ve ordered 4airtags
Great video 👍
Great report!
Looking buff Brian 😍
Have had nothing but issues with my tiles. So often I push the button to sound my tile and it tells me it can’t connect… in my small house. So often I just have to go digging around. If airTags are more reliable in the long run when I want to find my items it will be better. I don’t care about the fluff if the main functionality doesn’t work.
Great review
I have 6 Tiles and I've tested them beyond 100 yards. I supposedly found someone's Tile in a park in a gated community once. I suggest changing out those batteries in 8 months, they do not last 1 yr.
Man, that find you phone click option would have been awesome.
Nice real world test
Great video. Tile are better now but airtags have more potential. Aka family sharing 😉
Great video quality! Title also made similar tile to the air tag
I want to have a tracker with my enclosed trailer, and to put on some tools in my shop, in a rural location. I still can’t decide which would work for finding thieves? Active rfid would be big and costly.
I like that the apple tag uses a popular battery
The tile uses a not so common battery
Thank you for your work
Great video Brian!
Sun's out
Guns out, Brian
Not to mention tile can notify you that you left your item behind. That’s huge! Nobody’s talking about that.
Can you unpair a Airtag or remove it from your iCloud account?
Just delete it from your find my app
Been saying that for years. Accessories should never cost more equal to the main product.
Sharing is essential. besides, once an AirTag has open, you can’t tell if it’s properly closed.
By far the most comprehensive Airtags review I’ve seen so far, Tong is OG
