I wonder why the aircrafts use up so much of the runway before they actually 'touch-down' why can't they 'touch-down' earlier ? Doesn't that minimise any chance of a mishap and also beneficial in-case they have to abort?
Thanks a lot. It can't land earlier because that would mean a lower approach and it could face obstructions in the flight path like buildings and trees. Look up Precision approach path indicator (PAPI) and Instrument landing system (ILS) on google.
