Probably too many to be able to pick just 10; the vast majority of recipients seem to just reel off the names of all the people they're grateful to (don't forget the producers or your agent!) and telling their partner, kids and parents that they love them. Yawn. Don't bore us with that, tell us how you feel!

Definitely underrated is Russell Crowe's speech for Gladiator. He managed to do the "usual" parts of thanking parents and agents with eloquent and fresh phrasing, and ended it with poetic encouragement: "You know, when you grow up in the suburbs of Sydney or Auckland, or Newcastle like Ridley or Jamie Bell, or the suburbs of anywhere, you know, a dream like this seems kind of vaguely ludicrous and completely unattainable. But this moment is directly connected to those childhood imagining[s]. And for anybody who's on the down side of advantage and relying purely on courage, it's possible."

I didn't entirely agree with the win but I thought Michael Caine's Oscar speech for The Cider House Rules was one of the best speeches ever. No force in heaven or on earth will convince me that Cuba Gooding Jr. gave a better performance than William H Macy in Fargo, or Edward Norton in Primal Fear. This is one thing that PISSES me off about the Academy; this was a reward for a hip actor in a very hip and of-the-moment movie and the award was mostly for one scene of hip sort-of-funny dialogue that became the phrase of the moment.

Adrien Brody both his winning speech and his presentation the next year with the Binaca. Priceless.
I know he’s still cancelled, but Kevin Spacey thanking his mom for driving him to acting class during his acceptance speech for ‘The Usual Suspects’ is lovely.
Clark Gable thanking Frank Capra and Claudette Colbert is sweet and gracious.

I find Dustin Hoffman's speech quite pretentious. Hattie McDaniel's win was a milestone - but she wasn't even allowed to say what she wanted. Her speech was reportedly written by the studio and it's so cringy when they made her say she "hopes she'll always be a credit to her race". I agree on the rest of the list, specially Olivia Coleman.

No Viola? No Banini? No Caine? idk about this list. number 1 makes sense though due to it creating another film.

The best acceptance moment (not sure if it qualifies as a "speech") was when 20 Feet from Stardom won best documentary and they brought Darlene Love on stage.

I also loved Jeff Bridges and his tributes to his parents and his wife. It was sweet, sincere, and didn't cause anyone to turn off the TV.

Some excellent choices here. Unfortunately there's probably not a large pool of great Oscar speeches, too many of them (especially over the last few decades) are mostly just a dull recitation of people (agent, co-stars and crew, producers, family, the Academy, sky-daddy) whom the recipient feels obliged to thank publicly; understandable but not the stuff of a memorable speech. Frankly, we the viewers don't care about that - we wanna see and hear how winning the award makes the recipient feel!

Did you see the memorable speech given by Holocaust survivor Gerda Weissmann Klein? Not a household name, but very moving nonetheless.
