Dylan, all of your videos are so helpful. Hooray, for your success and for us to have access to your coaching program. Your authenticity and expert advice is honest and refreshing, when I am ready for an Etsy Coach, you are my first pick. As a creative, I suffer from what you are speaking of here and need to rethink something's. Also, a side note, my name is Brett, and have had similar experiences with my name and my appearance and expectations. Throughout my entire career from ad agency designer, to aviation, where every other male pilot's name was Brett, and I show up, and they were expecting someone else, still happens today!
Thank you so much, Brett!! I appreciate your feedback so much. I'd love to help you whenever you're ready for some guidance. And yes, I can totally relate to your Brett stories-- I have similar Dylan stories!
Best advice! I started out trying to create the danty simplicity minimalist designs but honestly, every “omg this design made me $$$$$$ I find super tacky and would NEvER where. On a walk today, it dawned on me that I can’t try to create for me because I am a very conscious spender and I would never be a customer of those styles. That said, I have totally redone my store and am starting fresh!
Great realization!!
1st !! This video came a a week late lol. I built a store around a printable niche that I found out with sale samurai that my niche gets maybe 100 searches a month if that and my key words I was using I’m competing with 7 figure shops …
Back to square 1 , finding something to sell
May I ask what your niche is/was?

Wow! This is the informationI have been looking for. Dylan, thank you so much for the info. I dont usually subscribe to any youtube channels, but your channel is worth it. I have two shops that I open about two years ago and only one has made me 500.00 the other one died, and now I know why. Thank you so much!
Glad you enjoy the channel!
I love the points you made, business mindset, people look at me like I am crazy when I say it.
This absolutely made to most since. This is the first video that is actually sticking in.
So great to hear! Please connect with me on IG @DylanJahraus, send me a DM and add GROWTH1 to the message
I really feel this I do two different types of products and one type sells way better but I'm not passionate about it. I have tried to push the other type of products and they do sell but not like other. This video really helped kick me in the pants to readjust my focus to what is actually working.
I got reminded of the metaverse disaster. Some people at FB apparently were really pasdionate about vr/ nfts and whatnot and wanted to push their vision but 'nobody' in the real world cares
There's generally two groups of buyers on Etsy; those who want to buy something as a gift (for example, your grandson turns 5 and he's also growing fast so a shirt is a good choice) and the other group is people who are just browsing to buy clothing that looks good/is something they like. The first group is obviously the more profitable one, since people go on Etsy mainly for gifts (at least with POD). This is just what I've noticed though, there's exceptions to everything.
This video is very important for any person who's an Etsy beginner! 👍
There are shops on Etsy that sell really cool, tasteful, quality stuff and have only a few hundred sales in like 5 years, while other shops in the same category that sell a bunch of ugly crap have hunters of thousands of sales. Mind-blowing really.
Everything really depends on a lot of things!😊
Do you have a shop already?
Thank you Dylan for this video! This is a new perspective that I haven’t thought about before. Could you do a video on ways to research your target customer? I know looking at reviews is one way but sometimes customers don’t go into detail about what they want.
Thanks, Mariah! I actually have an entire module with 11 lessons in it all about this (these steps are how you make sure that your shop is filled with items that people actually want vs. items you "think" people want). I'd love to chat more if you're interested!
I was actually thinking on starting an etsy shop but i dont know what to sell. I had to research my niche but seeing your video enlighten me on things that I really need to sell. I will rethink again and research for something different. I am stuck on what products I needed to sell.
If you need help let me know! About half of my students start with me before they have a product idea.
@@dylanjahraus I literally need help. How can I reach you? Thank you
I love the way you put this in perspective. I'm looking to start an Etsy store with my wife. This video is a good starting point for us. Thanks for making this video.
Glad it was helpful!
That's so lovely to hear. Have you started the etsy store? I have some tips for you @sjhicksfamily5493
Siiiigh…. I am constantly torn between these two mindsets. I KNOW, as a business-person, that I need to make things regular people want to spend money on. I’m not regular people, I don’t like spending money. As a creative-person, I want to make things I enjoy crafting and hope that “my people” show up to buy…. But you’re right. As always. Thanks for the kick in the butt
I understand! How long have you had your shop?
Really insightful and useful - thank you Dylan!
Thank you! Glad you're here!
You are so true Dylan. I have to keep reminding myself.
Did you follow us on Instagram already? @dylanjahraus!
Question: Even if you cater mostly to what "buying customers" want, do you still add in some products to your store that you feel "people like you" would be drawn to?
You are absolutely right... What do I do? I started sock shop -- socks with tatoo design
Thank you so much for sharing your insights. You make so much sense and really help us have a clearer vision of what needs to be done to be successful.
You are so welcome
I understand where you are coming from and I find your insights realistic. Question for you Dylan: do you work with artists at all? Or does your technique only work when you have no attachment to what you are selling? I’m thinking of a digital sticker business, but expanding to art prints, pattern design, or any other form or making a living selling my art. Is that something you can help with?
Yes!! A lot of my students are artists! If you'd like to see more about how the program works and fits into your goals feel free to schedule a free call and we can walk you through the back end: calendly.com/dylanjahraus/program-strategy-call?month=2023-05
Thank you! I will 👍

How did the call go? I will have one with her tomorrow and I wanna know what to expect
That's a very new perspective for me! It's something different from my beliefs but would definitely think about it.
Wonderful!
I’m selling in the coquette girly pink bow aesthetic which is popular and happens to be my style, but I think this plain pink bow coquette aesthetic is ending. I’m unsure what’s next in this girly aesthetic. Possibly bells and bows and maybe a nautical girly theme like the blue and white striped dress Amber wears in Clueless in that one scene. So a bow in a blue and white stripe pattern
That is great to hear! How long have you had your shop and have you connected with my on IG yet?
I used to work in a record store. The owner would sell what sold. He used to joke, if it was up to him he'd load up on Jeff Beck and The Who albums - his fave bands - but they never sold. Instead he never stocked them, and instead loaded up on heavy metal albums, which he hated but sold really well. I know other folks who sell stuff they love, but make no sales. You have remove your emotions. (My boss did have one rule - he refused to sell anything by Skrewdriver, Charles Manson and other scandalous bands.) My ex-gf had a shop of "local art". I was dating her when she was planning the store, before it opened. She told me once she would ONLY sell what she liked. The store lasted a year. By the end, she was using her second job to pay the rent. Emotions and business don't always work together.
Really good point!
Good to see some truth on here
Thanks!
Thank you so much, you are totally right !

Glad you like them!
Hi Dylan I'm really good at selling on eBay but only my second hand stuff. I'm really good at taking photos of it and making it look beautiful and describing it in a way that somehow makes it sell really quickly. Regarding it's his I wouldn't have a clue what to sell or where to begin? Does it all have to be items that we make ourselves?❤
Here's a link to my video that might help you decide what to sell. Dropping the link for you.

"Remove the artist hat"? Then I wouldn't have a shop in the first place. Selling my art is why I joined Etsy.
I understand detaching from the emotion of the art but this is a hard teaching. I'd love to hear what you say about people specifically selling their art. Do you have any videos about that?
I talk a little about it in this video! Here's a clip: ruclips.net/video/ksNi99HJnmY/видео.html
Well...that's refreshing
Thank you for your response!
I started my esty shop 2 months ago, with zero sale, I just buy a course but not going anywhere, I don't know if I can actual sell my products.
Ok. I agree with you. But how can I find out what my customers want or like? Is not that I can ask them
In my program I have lessons all about how to align with your customers, how to know how you're being perceived by your customers and how to find trends before they're on Etsy. Reach out on IG @DylanJahraus if you're interested in 1:1 help!
I really appreciate your tip about ideal customer. Thats great point what they want not to sell what I like. Thats the aha moment. Thank you🍀
Glad it was helpful!
Okay so... I am trying to sell to me. Haha! I am sort of a shopaholic, and I LOVE buying cute items like themed gifts, cute Tumblers, etc. So I guess my question is, what tools or websites are out there to research the type of items that shoppers like me want to buy?
Do you currently have a shop open?
It's funny because etsy is for handmade things. Or creative in some way. So that person would have to like it at least a little
I like your strategy and thought process. Thank you for sharing!
Glad it was helpful!
if I didn't enjoy selling what I like, I just wouldn't sell. there is a lot more easy ways to make money then etsy. One of my products I would buy if I was younger, and the other product I sell I might buy and I might not. The third thing I would buy if I could aford it. To me this is a business that you have to love selling or you wouldn't do it. Like I said I would not do it if I didn't enjoy it. And selling something I didn't like would be work, and If I just want to make money I certainly would not pick etsy.
Thank you for sharing your perspective on selling on Etsy. Your passion for your products is truly inspiring!
So how do I find my customer and and how do find out what they will buy? Where do I get the data?
Please reach out to me on IG and we will chat! Its @DylanJahraus you will just need to add GROWTH1 as a code in the message :)
Hi love your video I have a question if you get this I sell on Macari and Poshmark my single dad and I want to build my business more so I want to start selling on Etsy can I sell regular graphic T-shirts on there? I have lots of T-shirts and hats, but I didn’t make them myself . Thanks
Did you have your hand in the design process at all?
Yes, I design some of my own t-shirts but they got lost in the mail coming from China so I have to redo the order again with someone else because some reason they keep sending them to the wrong address or printed my address wrong on Ali express .
Is your training good for those of us who have not yet set up a store and are in the very beginning exploratory stages and are confused on how to get it all going? Or do we need to set it all up first and then start the training with you?

I'm not sure I fall into the love my stuff category... I am designing t-shirts with phrases and artwork, although my preference is for plain dark shirts... (I wear my designs for the advertising)..... Design mugs I'm more a fan of... I am putting my photography and artwork on products and I do have my own work on my walls.. Because I was a very avid photographer, it only made sense to hang my prints up over someone elses... I am a minimalist as well... My house is 12'x20'.. so "room" is at a premium... I have nearly as many chainsaws on shelves as I do decor and furnishings....🙄
Totally get it!
This is a huge dilemma for me. Im huge on health and ive always said id never open a donut shop just because it makes more money than a health store because i hate contributing to the problem of everyone being so addicted to sugar and unhealthy. This is y im broke lol. Ive walked a way from profitable products that i no longer believe on. There has to be a way to do both 😩 not necessarily something i LIKE but something that st least doesnt kill people lol

Sometimes you just have to do immoral things, that’s how you get rich sadly
sell drugs, people like drugs. lol
how about you find a way to make the doout healthier but keep the same way it is consistency and flavor wise.
@@Invisibletodaylol mmhm. It’s not our fault people prioritize things differently. I’ve recently learned it’s a cruel unfair world and while I’ll never intentionally be cruel or unfair, I will try to profit off what I see working. Meh
Dylan I have the product selling from printify in fashion category I don't own the products
So my question is is that a good niche to start my journey in printify like if I want to start in other niche there is limited options for me ...
So plzz ,I'm not able to understand this.

Wow..
No offense, but while your ideas make lots of business sense, I don't think I could wake up each morning and be on fire to sell things I don't even like. I am an artist and have things all over my wall. I thrive on creative things, and also pleasing people who are somewhat like me. I do applaud your business savvy and achievements. I may not make the big bucks, but I think I will have more fun along the way.
The customer I want doesn't need to sell on Etsy 😂
i live in canada how much should i pay for your course i really love watching your videos they are uniqe and you give a valuable information ❤❤
