    I had the great pleasure of seeing and hearing - and touching - this aircraft at Omaka Classic Fighters 2017 last weekend. Great show and, with three Spitfires there, and everything else, I spent the three days walking on air.
    I was up in the stand, surrounded by enthusiastic Australians, who had come over especially for the show. On the way into the airfield on Friday morning, I was talking to an Aussie couple who love coming to air shows in NZ. They said the more restrictive regulations in Australian aviation place limits on what pilots can do and how close to the spectators they can fly. They said in NZ, the pilots are allowed to "fly them like they stole them".

    Great video, and like others before me have said, great sound. In the US, I have heard a few Mustangs (Packard Merlins), but never a Spit or a Lanc or a Mosquito with the RR V-12, but get the same feel for the power. Hope to see them all one day.

    The Merlin 66 series engine determined the Mk IX LF variant, it was rated to give its best performance at lower altitudes. HF.Mk IX Spits used the Merlin 70 engine with improved performance at higher altitudes.

    Many religions state that perfection is only reserved for the Almighty. Well, the Almighty would have to go some to make something more perfect than this. R.J.Mitchell's Masterpiece.

    The Merlin makes one of the most pleasing sounds which can be heard by the human ear....just a shame that damn commentator didn't agree. Would she have talked over Pavarotti singing? There are times when less said the better.

      Unfortunately there are times where we really struggle to convince air show organisers that we NEED to be somewhere far away from the PA system when we're filming at a show. More often than not we're just stuck in the media pen with all the journo's (yap-yap-yap-yap) and still photographers (click-click-click-click), which is usually within 10m of a PA speaker (blah-blah-blah-blah). This is also VERY frustrating for us I can assure you!

      Historical Aviation Film Unit ...unfortunately the problem isn't confined to NZ, verbal diarrhoea affects most people at these shows when they get hold of the microphone.

      It’s funny, the commentator actually says they’ve been accused of talking too much around 2:25 😂

    un chasseur hors norme, nous le devons à l'ingénieur Mitchell's qui à étudié le vol de l'hirondelle et voila la pureté de cet aéronef
    en vol!!!! combien de pilotes Anglais courageux!!!!! ont gagnés la bataille d'ANGLETERRE!!!!! des pilotes Français, et autre qui ont
    rejoint l'Angleterre pour notre libération à tous!!!!! c'est un devoir de mémoire qui nous concerne tous!!!!. Mitchell's n'a pas eu la joie de voir son joli petit bijoux volé , il est décédé d'un cancer!!!!!

    well to be specific it's the Spitefire LF MK.IX, the difference from the standard MK.IX being the tail surfaces shape

    • @paladin56
      @paladin56 7 лет назад +2

      To be really, really specific (and pedantic!) it's an LF MK.IXc. The main difference between the Spitfire F.IXc and LF.IXc was the latter was powered by a Merlin 66 which used 150 octane fuel and was optimised for low and medium altitude performance. It was about 30 mph faster than a standard mkIX at lower altitudes.

    • @BatteredWalrus
      @BatteredWalrus 7 лет назад +1

      Tim Richardson also the tail shape is slightly different, with the F mk.IX having angled tail surfaces, but the LF features a angle then into a straight configuration

    • @paladin56
      @paladin56 7 лет назад +1

      You are quite right. Just checked some references. Never noticed that before. Presumably as early MkIXs were straight conversions from MkVCs the new tail was introduced directly in to production at a later date.

      Tim Richardson yes afaik

    Beautiful lines and sound, but in battle I'll take a P-47 anytime. Pilot survivability, better engine, longer range spells the 47.

    • @MarsFKA
      @MarsFKA 5 лет назад +2

      Ah, but could it dogfight as well as the Spitfire? That alone adds a lot to pilot survivability.

    • @SuperEdge67
      @SuperEdge67 4 года назад +1

      When the American Eagle squadrons were incorporated into the USAAF when the US entered the war the pilots converted to the P-47 and hated them. They wanted to keep their Spits. The P-47 climbed like brick.

      Airshow organisers (in this country at least) simply do not seem to get the fact that when we ask for access to a spot for filming that is away from the PA system, we're asking for a very valid reason..... we feel like we keep banging our head against that particular brick wall! And don't get us started on having to be situated with all the stills photographers who's cameras go 'click-click-click-click-click' all the darn time...... ;-(
