My family did canning every year also.
    That was some work.
Dad would enlist me, my friends to pick tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, peppers all sorts of vegetables for canning. Picking, washing, cutting, cooking and then we had to round up as many ball jars that we could find, clean and sterilized.
I know what a colander is. 🤔 Mom and Dad saved lots of money with canning.
Great video, thanks for bringing back memories of my youth.

Canning was a big thing for us when I was a kid in the 70’s.
Pasta sauce was the main thing but bread and butter pickles and apple sauce were right up there. This time of the year the cold cellar filled back up.
My wife and I had a lot of tomatoes one year in our garden so we decided to give it a shot and make our own pasta sauce since my Mom had all the things we needed all we had to get was the jars.
For the mess involved doing it inside and what we got out of it we never did it again.
I realized then why my Italian friends families did it in giant pots on a burner in the garage.

Before plastic pipe we would go through the metal drain pipes in the kitchen every fall when we did the tomatoes. We'd put up a few hundred quarts every year from our own garden. Sicilian household so we went through a lot of tomatoes.
When we made garlic pickles we'd toss a finger hot pepper or two in each jar to give them a little kick. When we canned the hot peppers we'd put an anchovy in each pepper in one third to half the jars.
Hanging and drying sausage to pack in mason jars that we filled with olive oil afterwards was for January/February. We'd make between 200 and 300 lbs. Since they were salt cured and packed in oil they were good for over a year without refrigeration. We made two types, Company Hot (yawn) and Family Hot (Oh Boy!). I suspect Ben might find the Company Hot a bit wimpy. I used an old thick circular saw blade to make a grinding plate with bigger holes for the meat grinder to get the texture right since when the meat is ground too fine it just doesn't taste the same.
Ben can soup up the bug light with an ignition transformer from an oil burner. That's what I used when I'd make up my own 1 to 2 acre bug zappers using an aluminum wash basin, two cake pans (mom caught me before I punched holes in them and made me go out to the Five and Dime to buy my own) and rabbit screen along with a handful of marbles from my kid brothers marble bag (I returned the marbles a few years ago when the last zapper finally died beyond resurrection). Oh and of course a ballast and a few fluorescent black lights.
I can sympathize with Ben when things don't sound right. It irks you until you track it down to see if its a just a problem and not A PROBLEM! Oh Nooo!
    Best!

We use to can quite a bit but we wicked up a vacuum sealer and freeze so much more now. Easier as you just cut up peppers, tomatoes, onions and such and bag then in the sealer nice and flat so they take less room in the freezer. I make lots of chilli for our adult kids and their families with them every couple weeks with minimal work and i find everything taste so fresh. I get not everyone can keep a large deep freeze running but for us it works good and it doesn't crowd our pantry with bottles. Last year i made our own pasta sause and bagged it then froze it and it worked our real good too. No worries about lids popping and such either. Wife still pickles so like I said space in the walk in pantry is at a premium. We keep enough food we would survive six months without access to anything else and it helps knowing you can help out your kids if they need it or provide comfort food as they are very busy with work, kids and such. Prepping in any way just makes sense now economically and with the world the way it is. Plus its healthier making your food from scratch. Nice seeing another full length video, maybe find someone close that you an colaberate with on more content to grow your channel, sure you already have been looking. You keep making videos and we will keep watching. Cheers from Canada guys.

If it was can able, my mother and I would can it. We always had a large garden and if we didn't grow it ourselves, we went down to the valley and go the U-pick farms. My aunt and uncle were Alaska fishermen and would bring down a couple of big salmon each year. They were canned in half pint jars. We ate more salmon rather than meat. My Dad raised rabbits for meat also. This was before the advent of freezers so my Dad and neighbors would go together and rent a locker in town for deer and any other game.

They do look a lot alike for sure, that said they have quite the different personalities. They seem to get along very well which doesn't always happen which is nice. I would say while Ben was away so much they learnt to count on each other which is good for family. Nothing harder when a parent has to spend time away for work, its nice to see Bens entire family together. Lifes short, to many people find out to late how short it is and wish they had spent more time on the important things. I had a heart attack at 55 two year ago, the year after I spent 9 months working with my son helping him start his business. I enjoyed it more than anything i did on my own for years. Allowed us to hang out and without a reason. And no we were never astranged or anything, he just wanted ro do his own thing after school which meant moving about 2000 miles to follow a girl.. lol He moved home after a couple years, met a real nice woman got married and had a son.
