I am short person. My height is 165 cm and my weight at that time was 78kg and I rode gs adventure. It's more difficult in the city than it is for a taller person, but I got used to it. I only reached the ground with one foot, and to do that, I had to have the bike a little bent to the side. Once you get going, it all falls away and Your only concern is not to spend all day on it. Message for short people: You may be short but you have to be able to handle yourself and stop bitching about your height. Get your shit together, own your height and enjoy riding any bike
I experienced 180.000 kms on a “regular” GS and 70.000 kms on a 1200 adventure. I recently purchased a new 1250 GSA. I will never go back to the regular version, despite my length (1.78 m)
Why? And Why did you not say the reason? Is it top secret information why you will only have the GS Adventure. I am also thinking about getting the Adventure, mostly because the bigger gasoline tank. The gas stations are been closed down one after the other, the last years lost 3 gas stations around where I live. Now I have to drive all the way out of the city to get to a gas station. So when I park, I'm always low on gas. It take so much time to get somewhere. When I always have to get fuel, when going somewhere. And I am sick of it. But now I have only 10 liter tank on my scooter. Wish it had much bigger tank. At lest 5 liter more. Now I cant fuel before I have less then half a tank. Because the stations have a limit on at least has to fuel 5 liter of gas. There is a lot of extra work and stress in bringing an extra jug of petrol. And it takes so much space.
I just took delivery on a 2021 GS-1250 "Triple Black", still waiting for the road salt and all the snow here in NJ to melt, and let a good rain fall clean the roads and I'm ready for Spring !!!
Nice video, very precise and down to the point. I’ve had 2 1200GS’s and now since January 2019 I have a 1250GSA with just about every option you can think of. I will never go back to a GS for 2 reasons, one is the paniers and second the fuel tank. I measure 1.77m tall and am able to have both feet on the ground with just having redone the seat by a secialist in Grenoble France. With my 1250 I’ve now done 28000 km and it runs like a dream. I'm 5'8", and I owned a 2015 BMW R1200GS ADV "Olive green". I spent almost 8 months crossing the Andes mountain, Atacama desert and Chilean & Argentinian Patagonia. I never had so much fun riding a bike, and living in California i can easily ride any type of bike. My first GS was the 2015 BMW GS, 5 months later I traded it for the 2015 GSA, I bought the last batch for the year, It could easily be registered as 2016 model but I decided to keep it as 2015. It's not about how tall you are (well, unless you are really short) It's about how you handle it.
Wow, handing and ADV isn't necessarily that easy of a thing for some of us. But hey, this sentence got me especially interested: "living in California i can easily ride any type of bike" - what did you mean here? I'm honestly curious.
I had 1200 gs lc and I have 1200 gsa lc now. Some differences most likely have not changed with 1250 models. My main observations: gs was for me most comfortable in highest seat position (I am 1,80m with some limitations in legs joints flexibility and only high and low position were gs options in 2013), but on gsa I have seat front on high and seat back on low to be comfortable. If both sides on high, it pushes me too much towards the wide tank. On gs, I automatically had to put my feet balls on footpegs to have the best position. Not so on gsa, footpegs are right there where I want to have them when riding (it might be because of wider tank). I mostly ride the highest suspension position (rider with luggage, although i do not travel a lot) in comfort mode and even 10 hours ride with some short stops is not a problem. Gs is in general a bit nimbler, easier to manoeuvre at slow speed when parking, it is like a mountain bike when you compare it even with air cooled previous model, although being heavier. When parking gsa, some attention is needed. I do only easy off road, so no big difference, except when suddenly stoping in not ideal position of the bike - gsa is heavier and higher. Main gsa advantages: You can enjoy even highway rides, speed limits are not a problem, because you are not nervous when waiting limits to end, massive look and in each city you are riding through, you have feeling, you are just conquering that city, especially in matte olive colour with tons of accessories..... Although both bikes are great, I will always stay with gsa.
I made this decision 2 days ago. I almost went with the GS. But I’ve always wanted a GSA and I thought if I didn’t get it, I’d regret it later. So I got it. It’s a big ole FAT motorcycle. Love it.
@15:02, it really depends on your height(as you mentioned). I owned an older GS but sold it and bought a GS adventure, I am 6'3", 225# , and the adventure "fits" me better. I don't see myself "falling down more often" just because it's an inch or so taller, and the bulkiness if the Adventure's tank (and thus, extra weight), is quite negligible ( again, for taller riders). Also, consider "rolling weight" ... the bulkiness of the GSA completely disappears once you are moving. It's only when you are moving it around in the garage that you may notice it.
I do believe that once a bike's moving, they both do it perfectly and additional weight of an Adventure is just a number in our heads. As for reaching the ground and the risk of falling down, then if you're that tall, it may simply not make a big difference to you.
Take the official fuel consumption figures with a pinch of salt. I just completed a tour in Europe and got only 160 miles out of a tank full on my GS. Thinking about getting the GSA purely for increased range👍

I can't wait until the level 5 lockdown is finished in Ireland. This is my first GSA, I traded in an XR, and before that I had a couple of RTs, and for variety some fireblades, a Vstrom, Varadero, and Bandits. I am sooo looking forward to riding the GS. I have no interest in going off road, but I do like the idea of the big tank, and the bigger size of the adventure. I am not a small guy!! :) I look forward to your next presentations!!

I own a 2018 R1200GS Adventure Rallye since august '18, rode it 43000 km by now in all weather conditions and the fuel comsumption BMW indicates is true. I ride a good mix of about 50/50 city/overland and I always cover distances between 550km and 600km in road mode. The onboard-computer always displays 4,5l to 5,5l fuel consumption. I would always prefer the Adventure over the normal version again. It's worth the higher price in my opinion!
Hi, just purchased a 2023 GSA (Triple Black) which is still stored at the dealer. I just feel the GSA looks better and beefier. It is certainly nice to have the extra fuel. I don't have to fill it up all the way when I go in the dirt. When I test rode it, I adjusted the seat to the lower setting (I am 6'1 ft = 186cm). Seat felt comfy on the test ride, but I know for sure when I ride her home (600 miles). Thanks for the in-depth comparison. It just confirmed my bike choice 🙂
I´m 186cm. Bought myself a 2020 GS1250 HP last year. Got the GS instead of the GSA cause i like the color og the HP better than the HP GSA... i bought it with +2cm suspension and high rally seat. Price wise a GSA would come out better since its including all crashbars etc.... Lowered the pegs by 2 cm so i have relaxed knee angle, and short distanse from ass to seat when standing... I ride it on gravel roads and single tracks. Absoluttely awsome machine!!!!!
I'm the same high as you mate, test ride the gs rallye last Friday and the next day I bought it. The best bike i ever ridden,i rode her for 3 hours test ride and I absolutely fellin live with her. So nimble and agile. I don't have a chance to try the Gsa coz the dealer didn't have the demo. Now i look on RUclips that many people choose Gsa over Gs? Does the Gsa more comfortable over Gs? I'm driving 100% on tarmac only.
@@user-tx5dy1fz4g you have more wind/weather protection on the GSA. bigger tank and some might argue a bit better seat...but thats all a matter of preferance. GS feels more agile and nimble than the GSA since it´s lighter and feels narrower du to the smaler tank. anyway, theyr both excellent machines!
GS vs GSA IMHO in my country (Australia) if you answer yes to two of the below buy the GSA. 1) Are you going off-road and want spoked wheels and / or the extra suspension travel & clearance? 2) Are you likely to travel 500km (extra range) in a day possible / likely? 3) Would you add Luggage, Enduro foot pegs, adjustable foot controls, additional lights, or crash bars? BONUS 4) Do you just want a GSA? If you answered yes to two or more, spend the extra AU$4000
I can't believe this. You answered all the questions I wanted to know and some very important ones I never thought of. Im at the point of buying a Gs but my problem is I need to get it through a door 36" wide. I'm hoping I can wiggle the bars through a couple of inches but as you rightly mentioned the Adventure is wider but thank you so much for informing me that this is due to the hand guards. Not even BMW main stealers could tell me that and just wanted me to buy an Adventure. Thanks again. Its a Sub and a thumbs up from me 👍

my understanding is with height is with the R1250GS rally you can get two suspension settings but you have to order it when you purchase the bike new that is standard and sport and the difference is the sport gives you 2.5" more lift
I've done Alaska, New Zealand ( both islands), Spain and Vegas to Sturgis in 1200/ 1250's GS's. I own a GSA 1250 that I took to the Smokey Mountains ( Dragon included!), Daytona, the Keys...( I live in Miami)...Very Little differences in handling, braking or handling above 10 miles per hour...The range extension benefit of the GSA, would only be extremely noticeable in less developed environments..( i.e. going to Prudhoe Bay). Otherwise, the best motorcycle for what I do. Long travels with parts of non paved roads (i.e Denali Highway or Mc Carthy Road in Alaska, backroads in New Zealand or the fantastic County Roads all over the great US of A!)
Hi V-Told, Thanks for comparison between GS Adventure and regular GS. That help me a lot to select my new GS. BMW bikes are expensive and parts too. As this is my first bike, after buying bike there are other expenses also.
Just a small correction: with the 2021 model, you can get the rack for the aluminum panniers with the normal GS at no additional cost, which is what a got on my new 2021 Triple Black GS :)
Great video again...I've owned both and agree with your comparisons. I'd love to to have one of each but currently own a GSA since I tour/camp and do some light off-road riding.
I'm glad you like the video. If you're big and physically strong enough, GSA has pretty much everything that a regular GS has and more. So if you don't mind the extra weight and physical requirements to handle it, I guess you're not missing out on anything really. All the best with your beast!
Hi! Very interesting video! Thank you! On my humble opinion, if you try to equipe the Standard GS with just a few things that the GSA has in standard, you will see that the prices will be about the same.... Am talking about using BMW genuine parts. With Engine Guard, heated grips, and hands protections the GS will cost about the same as the GSA. So people who are gonna pick the Standard GS should think about ride it without adding many things. That's gonna be a great bike without having a lot of extra options.
I believe that you made a valid point about adding some accessories. Still, this gives a choice of adding some while skipping others, and with the ADV there's no such option with those same parts. But yes, this should be definitely considered.
Re: Filling the fuel. I ride Versys X 250 with 17 liter tank. I only fill it to the fullest when I return to my village, and back when my workplace was far-ish. When I got a job half the distance to my previous work place area, I tend to fill it less full (hence, overall fill frequency is the same-ish. If previous full is $20, I would only spend $10 per fill now). I wish these adventure bike follows the Tenere 700 ( which if I think correctly the one that have the most of gas volume very low on the bike). Just my 2 cent.

The GSA would be fine for me. But I don't need the larger tank, it's awkward looking, and when full, makes the bike top heavier. I added an after market larger windshield, and an MRA X-creen as I'm 6'5", a taller seat, after market engine guards, with highway pegs. I also added BMW side cases. It fit me wonderfully and feels more toss-able, than my former GSA.
So I understand that you've gone with GS without the "A" then. GS is a pretty large bike anyway and I feel that one of the best options for taller guys like yourself. Sounds like you've taken a good care of yours equipping it with additional features. Good luck with the bike!
Nice review but it needs a correction. Higher handlebars means not more but LESS force to keep the bike upright. The longer moment arm gets the less force it needs.
If I wanted to ride off road I wouldn’t buy a GS, the GSA is the perfect road bike, even better than the two standard GSs I owned previously. It’s a tall beast though if you have a sub 30” inside leg. May be my imagination but I think the GSA looks better and has a plusher ride, may be the extra weight.
Thank you for the video, lots of good information. I bought the "regular" 1250GS and so far I have no regrets at all. Oh, and yes, I added lower crash bars and my GS came with spoked wheels and hand guards. PS - I don't get anywhere near 400km on a full tank.

I did it once, on a tour with my wife in germany. She was following with her R1200R so we were adhering to the speedlimits everywhere and keeping acceleration within the 'driving miss Daisy' range. 420km with 1 tank on regular GS, with loaded bags.
I recently bought a 2015 GS to replace my 2007 GS and deliberately so over the GSA. I could actually find a GSA easier, low mileage GSAs are all over marketplace near me and finding a low mileage GS was much more difficult. Anyway my choice is aesthetic and feel. The bulky tank of the GSA makes it feel totally like a tourer at all times. The GS - with my bags removed just lets me feel more like i am riding a naked bike and have that hooligan feel more than the GSA. Plus IMO the GS just looks better. I also like not having the heavier 2 gallons of fuel high up when i am fire roading it on mountain switchbacks. (I live in the mountains). I added the lower engine guards and the adventure pegs, In addition to givi trekker aluminum cases i only carry when touring.
The Multistrada doesn’t have shaft drive as far as I know so that bike is out of consideration for me. 20 litres isn’t adequate so I’d go for the Adventure withheld crash bars and larger tank.
@@VToldsMotoShow Having owned 3 shaft drive bikes and not being very mechanically inclined, I’d happily tootle along on a 136hp R1250 GS all day. At least I know at the end of it I don’t have to grease or adjust a chain.
Well I have my GS Exclusive for about 8 months,I can tell you the best I can get in city/highway is 26 mpg.did a short 600 mile trip mostly highway with a full load,36mpg was the best,also you can get cross spock wheels on the gs.love the bike it rides great.love the video and the input.

Hi Thanks for good detailing of two different products of same origin and I am 5.feet 6in I actually booked Adventure low suspension than changed it to GS low suspension which is 804 mm I am comfortable with that . but the problem is the dealer was very cooperative and knowledgeable .no test drive at all.this was a drawback.
It might be too demanding for any dealer to have a lowered demo motorcycle available, so if that's what you meant then I'm not surprised. At the end of a motorcycling season, they've got to get rid of those motorcycles - sell them. And still most of them aren't lowered, so I get where this is coming from. Still, I'm glad you've found your right GS.
There’s something that you did not mention that is important. You can order an ADV low suspension which has basically the same ground clearance as a normal GS. And on this low suspension ADV you can always set it in the HIGH suspension setting when you need more clearance.
I got a new 1290 SAS OTD 4 months ago for $16,500. Not only is that $8-10,000 cheaper than a GS, the bike is lighter, quicker and more fun in the twisties.

I purchased the GSA 1250 for the high range kilometers.I have a first ride around 360 km in a day, so my observation was that the GSA 1200 Lc was more economic????
Seats are different. I have a rental fleet of bikes ordered new. GSA has 2 cm higher stock seat (so half of the difference 85/87 - 89/91 is the seat) and it is a little more comfortable. So you can swap seat to make gsa lower. And it definitely has other ergonomic because of that. I am 198 cm and it is obviously for my knees.

I wish I could but Honda is mostly absent in my portfolio of bikes that I've ridden. Even though my first motorcycle was a Honda, then the brand had nothing that would trigger my interest and make me try to get on one of their bikes. Not sure I could even test ride it now. I gladly would though. I believe that there may be a huge gap between those motorcycles in reality. Honda being a younger brother here.
Thanks for kind words. And yes, BMW offer adjustable foot rests in an Adventure for example. Pretty sure you could install them on the regular GS too as an aftermarket accessory.
Hi! You drive on GS a lot, i new owner of this bike. Can You tell me, ( its my first BMW ), what do You think about clutch in LC models? Mine is very "difficult", on first ride many failed starts, clutch engengment point is very tight and far away from bar, i must learn about start in GS from beginning... i must add more rpms to start smooth. Did you have feels like me?
Yes, clutch may be also a bit "hard" and require some strong grip. Remember that you can adjust the lever itself and bring it closer to the handlebar for easier use.

Yes, I've owned Japanese bikes for over 10 years and this is where my opinion comes from. Maybe we're just the cases of "grass is greener everywhere else". Still, I don't mean reliability but the whole ownership experience.
I may be wrong, but that doesn't sound right. If the difference in length between them is only 1cm, and the GSA has more travel (meaning the fork extends a bit further than on the GS), then there wouldn't seem to be any difference between the frames themselves.
No, it won't. Standard GS 800 mm (low seat and low suspension), Adventure 820 mm (low seat and low suspension). Keep in mind low suspension has some minor negative influence on riding capabilities.
I went for the GS version as anyway i’ll be traveling not more than 400km offroad at once 😂 if i really need that extra fuel i’ll just strap a couple of portable tanks on the crashbara
i'm 188 cm i got gs 1250 adv... but rally seat on hp version is too tall, i used the low seat from bmw and its perfection.. i can lower both feets fully.
That's an interesting combo then. But may be a reasonable solution in the end if one looks towards and Adventure for whatever reason but doesn't necessarily want all that extra height. Thanks for the hint!
If you turn the volume up, you may realise that it's background soundtrack playing there. This was intended, though if it's annoying and you just hear the "ringing", then it means that the track is wrong and should not be used. Duly noted - thanks!
1 Liter of fuel don't weight 1kg, the density of fuel is not 1, it is about 0.74, so the weight of 1 Liter of fuel is about 0.74kg and therefore the weight of 20 Liter of fuel is about 15kg. Just a note.
As I am over 60YO I stop for a knee and back stretch every 2 hours max. In Europe and the western world, on the road network while touring, there is always a gas station within the GSs range. So why would I want to ride the rest of the time (I also commute in my GS) a big fat adventure motorcycle? I can justify buying an adventure only if going on intercontinental and mainly off road trips. There it is king!
Thanks V! But what about the optional Sport suspension option upgrade that gives both front and rear suspension even more travel and ground clearance on the GS and GSA? I see their both available as an extra option for both models on the bmw-motoraad configurator even when the Rallye package is chosen.

Test rode gsa a couple months ago and rode both the Ktm SAS and gs yesterday..I loved both gs and gsa and found Ktm to feel alright but kind of low budget/ lacking detail quality. Gs was more flickable and sporty while gsa was stable and commanding..I’m torn.
Thanks for sharing. I myself am thinking about GS vs SAS/SAR pretty often as they're really cool but I can confirm that to me, BMW's quality and overall feel is also more impressive than KTM's. On the other hand, KTM's performance is something. If you're considering GS Adventure, let me suggest that instead of SAS, you try the R version of the 1290. There may be a surprise in terms of certain behaviors. It's not for high speed turns but if you're riding more at lower speeds, it can be surprisingly satisfying and also easy to control. GS vs GSA is a lot about your size. If you're below 190 cm tall, then I'd hesitate to go for the Adventure unless you're going to ride on the highways and won't have to deal with all the weight high from the ground. A matter of style is also there.

Very good comparison. I've been casually researching the two, thinking of replacing my Harley. At 5'9" and 31" inseam, I can not reach the ground unless I get the 'low' seat and put it in the lowest position. I would not want the low suspension version. Disappointing....
Thanks and I'm glad that you like the video. Somewhere on the web there are simulators of what the inner leg curve needs to be on specific motorcycles. Not sure I recall the name of this parameter correctly though. Still, it may be worth for you to check that website and measure yourself to get proper information without the need of jumping on every single bike to know if it would make sense for you to ride it and be comfortable or not.
You can get one foot down, whit one foot on the back brake. That is the way to stop, anyway. You don't need both feet down. And it is a bad habit not to hold the bike still with the back brake.

Which 1 will u prefer in this case. 1250GS or GSA, and i might encounter some off roads but it will not be probably that bigger like made for rallies. PLZ note, that my reach is higher which 70 or 71 inches.
Hi, if I were you, I think I'd go for the regular GS purely because of height. There are shorter riders that deal with GSA but I know that I myself prefer to feel that I'm in control and riding into different places and over different terrain, a shorter bike that's more manageable for me would be a big plus for me. You can still install a lower seat and even lower the suspension so there are plenty of options.
The weight of fuel is not 1 kilo per liter, it's around 720 grams, so the the weight of the two bikes' full tanks is 14.4 kg vs 21.6 kg.

The gas stations are been closed down one after the other, the last years lost 3 gas stations around where I live. Now I have to drive all the way out of the city to get to a gas station. So when I park, I'm always low on gas.
It take so much time to get somewhere. When I always have to get fuel, when going somewhere. And I am sick of it.
But now I have only 10 liter tank on my scooter. Wish it had much bigger tank. At lest 5 liter more. Now I cant fuel before I have less then half a tank. Because the stations have a limit on at least has to fuel 5 liter of gas. There is a lot of extra work and stress in bringing an extra jug of petrol. And it takes so much space.

Nice video, very precise and down to the point. I’ve had 2 1200GS’s and now since January 2019 I have a 1250GSA with just about every option you can think of. I will never go back to a GS for 2 reasons, one is the paniers and second the fuel tank. I measure 1.77m tall and am able to have both feet on the ground with just having redone the seat by a secialist in Grenoble France. With my 1250 I’ve now done 28000 km and it runs like a dream. I'm 5'8", and I owned a 2015 BMW R1200GS ADV "Olive green". I spent almost 8 months crossing the Andes mountain, Atacama desert and Chilean & Argentinian Patagonia. I never had so much fun riding a bike, and living in California i can easily ride any type of bike. My first GS was the 2015 BMW GS, 5 months later I traded it for the 2015 GSA, I bought the last batch for the year, It could easily be registered as 2016 model but I decided to keep it as 2015. It's not about how tall you are (well, unless you are really short) It's about how you handle it.
Wow, handing and ADV isn't necessarily that easy of a thing for some of us. But hey, this sentence got me especially interested: "living in California i can easily ride any type of bike" - what did you mean here? I'm honestly curious.
I had 1200 gs lc and I have 1200 gsa lc now. Some differences most likely have not changed with 1250 models. My main observations: gs was for me most comfortable in highest seat position (I am 1,80m with some limitations in legs joints flexibility and only high and low position were gs options in 2013), but on gsa I have seat front on high and seat back on low to be comfortable. If both sides on high, it pushes me too much towards the wide tank. On gs, I automatically had to put my feet balls on footpegs to have the best position. Not so on gsa, footpegs are right there where I want to have them when riding (it might be because of wider tank). I mostly ride the highest suspension position (rider with luggage, although i do not travel a lot) in comfort mode and even 10 hours ride with some short stops is not a problem. Gs is in general a bit nimbler, easier to manoeuvre at slow speed when parking, it is like a mountain bike when you compare it even with air cooled previous model, although being heavier. When parking gsa, some attention is needed. I do only easy off road, so no big difference, except when suddenly stoping in not ideal position of the bike - gsa is heavier and higher. Main gsa advantages: You can enjoy even highway rides, speed limits are not a problem, because you are not nervous when waiting limits to end, massive look and in each city you are riding through, you have feeling, you are just conquering that city, especially in matte olive colour with tons of accessories..... Although both bikes are great, I will always stay with gsa.

I made this decision 2 days ago. I almost went with the GS. But I’ve always wanted a GSA and I thought if I didn’t get it, I’d regret it later. So I got it. It’s a big ole FAT motorcycle. Love it.
@15:02, it really depends on your height(as you mentioned). I owned an older GS but sold it and bought a GS adventure, I am 6'3", 225# , and the adventure "fits" me better. I don't see myself "falling down more often" just because it's an inch or so taller, and the bulkiness if the Adventure's tank (and thus, extra weight), is quite negligible ( again, for taller riders). Also, consider "rolling weight" ... the bulkiness of the GSA completely disappears once you are moving. It's only when you are moving it around in the garage that you may notice it.
I do believe that once a bike's moving, they both do it perfectly and additional weight of an Adventure is just a number in our heads. As for reaching the ground and the risk of falling down, then if you're that tall, it may simply not make a big difference to you.
Take the official fuel consumption figures with a pinch of salt. I just completed a tour in Europe and got only 160 miles out of a tank full on my GS. Thinking about getting the GSA purely for increased range👍

I can't wait until the level 5 lockdown is finished in Ireland. This is my first GSA, I traded in an XR, and before that I had a couple of RTs, and for variety some fireblades, a Vstrom, Varadero, and Bandits. I am sooo looking forward to riding the GS. I have no interest in going off road, but I do like the idea of the big tank, and the bigger size of the adventure. I am not a small guy!! :)

I own a 2018 R1200GS Adventure Rallye since august '18, rode it 43000 km by now in all weather conditions and the fuel comsumption BMW indicates is true. I ride a good mix of about 50/50 city/overland and I always cover distances between 550km and 600km in road mode. The onboard-computer always displays 4,5l to 5,5l fuel consumption. I would always prefer the Adventure over the normal version again. It's worth the higher price in my opinion!

Hi, just purchased a 2023 GSA (Triple Black) which is still stored at the dealer. I just feel the GSA looks better and beefier. It is certainly nice to have the extra fuel. I don't have to fill it up all the way when I go in the dirt. When I test rode it, I adjusted the seat to the lower setting (I am 6'1 ft = 186cm). Seat felt comfy on the test ride, but I know for sure when I ride her home (600 miles). Thanks for the in-depth comparison. It just confirmed my bike choice 🙂

I´m 186cm. Bought myself a 2020 GS1250 HP last year. Got the GS instead of the GSA cause i like the color og the HP better than the HP GSA... i bought it with +2cm suspension and high rally seat. Price wise a GSA would come out better since its including all crashbars etc.... Lowered the pegs by 2 cm so i have relaxed knee angle, and short distanse from ass to seat when standing... I ride it on gravel roads and single tracks. Absoluttely awsome machine!!!!!
I'm the same high as you mate, test ride the gs rallye last Friday and the next day I bought it. The best bike i ever ridden,i rode her for 3 hours test ride and I absolutely fellin live with her. So nimble and agile. I don't have a chance to try the Gsa coz the dealer didn't have the demo. Now i look on RUclips that many people choose Gsa over Gs? Does the Gsa more comfortable over Gs? I'm driving 100% on tarmac only.
@@user-tx5dy1fz4g you have more wind/weather protection on the GSA. bigger tank and some might argue a bit better seat...but thats all a matter of preferance. GS feels more agile and nimble than the GSA since it´s lighter and feels narrower du to the smaler tank. anyway, theyr both excellent machines!

I can't believe this. You answered all the questions I wanted to know and some very important ones I never thought of. Im at the point of buying a Gs but my problem is I need to get it through a door 36" wide. I'm hoping I can wiggle the bars through a couple of inches but as you rightly mentioned the Adventure is wider but thank you so much for informing me that this is due to the hand guards. my understanding is with height is with the R1250GS rally you can get two suspension settings but you have to order it when you purchase the bike new that is standard and sport and the difference is the sport gives you 2.5" more lift

I've done Alaska, New Zealand ( both islands), Spain and Vegas to Sturgis in 1200/ 1250's GS's. I own a GSA 1250 that I took to the Smokey Mountains ( Dragon included!), Daytona, the Keys...( I live in Miami)...Very Little differences in handling, braking or handling above 10 miles per hour...The range extension benefit of the GSA, would only be extremely noticeable in less developed environments..( i.e. going to Prudhoe Bay). Otherwise, the best motorcycle for what I do. Long travels with parts of non paved roads (i.e Denali Highway or Mc Carthy Road in Alaska, backroads in New Zealand or the fantastic County Roads all over the great US of A!)

Just a small correction: with the 2021 model, you can get the rack for the aluminum panniers with the normal GS at no additional cost, which is what a got on my new 2021 Triple Black GS :)

I'm glad you like the video. If you're big and physically strong enough, GSA has pretty much everything that a regular GS has and more. So if you don't mind the extra weight and physical requirements to handle it, I guess you're not missing out on anything really. All the best with your beast!

On my humble opinion, if you try to equipe the Standard GS with just a few things that the GSA has in standard, you will see that the prices will be about the same.... Am talking about using BMW genuine parts. With Engine Guard, heated grips, and hands protections the GS will cost about the same as the GSA. So people who are gonna pick the Standard GS should think about ride it without adding many things. That's gonna be a great bike without having a lot of extra options.
I believe that you made a valid point about adding some accessories. Still, this gives a choice of adding some while skipping others, and with the ADV there's no such option with those same parts. But yes, this should be definitely considered.

Re: Filling the fuel. I ride Versys X 250 with 17 liter tank. I only fill it to the fullest when I return to my village, and back when my workplace was far-ish. When I got a job half the distance to my previous work place area, I tend to fill it less full (hence, overall fill frequency is the same-ish. If previous full is $20, I would only spend $10 per fill now). I wish these adventure bike follows the Tenere 700 ( which if I think correctly the one that have the most of gas volume very low on the bike). Just my 2 cent.

The GSA would be fine for me. But I don't need the larger tank, it's awkward looking, and when full, makes the bike top heavier. I added an after market larger windshield, and an MRA X-creen as I'm 6'5", a taller seat, after market engine guards, with highway pegs. I also added BMW side cases. It fit me wonderfully and feels more toss-able, than my former GSA.
So I understand that you've gone with GS without the "A" then. GS is a pretty large bike anyway and I feel that one of the best options for taller guys like yourself. Sounds like you've taken a good care of yours equipping it with additional features. Good luck with the bike!
Nice review but it needs a correction. Higher handlebars means not more but LESS force to keep the bike upright. The longer moment arm gets the less force it needs.
If I wanted to ride off road I wouldn’t buy a GS, the GSA is the perfect road bike, even better than the two standard GSs I owned previously. It’s a tall beast though if you have a sub 30” inside leg. May be my imagination but I think the GSA looks better and has a plusher ride, may be the extra weight.
It should have a plusher ride due to more wheels travel.

I did it once, on a tour with my wife in germany. She was following with her R1200R so we were adhering to the speedlimits everywhere and keeping acceleration within the 'driving miss Daisy' range. 420km with 1 tank on regular GS, with loaded bags.
small correction: 1 liter of fuel weights 750 gram, i.e. fuel volumic mass is lower than water. So 30 liters translate "only" into 22,5kg, not 30kg.

Reckon the handling difference is more profound that you suggested. It's due in no small way to the steering geometry being different.
I recently bought a 2015 GS to replace my 2007 GS and deliberately so over the GSA.
I could actually find a GSA easier, low mileage GSAs are all over marketplace near me and finding a low mileage GS was much more difficult.
Anyway my choice is aesthetic and feel. The bulky tank of the GSA makes it feel totally like a tourer at all times. The GS - with my bags removed just lets me feel more like i am riding a naked bike and have that hooligan feel more than the GSA. Plus IMO the GS just looks better. I also like not having the heavier 2 gallons of fuel high up when i am fire roading it on mountain switchbacks. (I live in the mountains).
I added the lower engine guards and the adventure pegs, In addition to givi trekker aluminum cases i only carry when touring.
The Multistrada doesn’t have shaft drive as far as I know so that bike is out of consideration for me. 20 litres isn’t adequate so I’d go for the Adventure withheld crash bars and larger tank.
Right, the Multi doesn't have a drive shaft and I agree that this may be a deal-breaker for some of us. I love the idea of a maintenance-free drive.

I like GS windscreen (smaller) for summer and side to side handlebar clearance. I use the GSA windscreen in the cold months.
Well I have my GS Exclusive for about 8 months,I can tell you the best I can get in city/highway is 26 mpg.did a short 600 mile trip mostly highway with a full load,36mpg was the best,also you can get cross spock wheels on the gs.love the bike it rides great.love the video and the input.

Sorry to disappoint but 2021 1250gs with 20l does the same km as 850gs with 15l. And that is 300-350km per average.
Hi Thanks for good detailing of two different products of same origin and I am 5.feet 6in I actually booked Adventure low suspension than changed it to GS low suspension which is 804 mm I am comfortable with that . but the problem is the dealer was very cooperative and knowledgeable .no test drive at all.this was a drawback.
It might be too demanding for any dealer to have a lowered demo motorcycle available, so if that's what you meant then I'm not surprised. At the end of a motorcycling season, they've got to get rid of those motorcycles - sell them. And still most of them aren't lowered, so I get where this is coming from. Still, I'm glad you've found your right GS.

There’s something that you did not mention that is important. You can order an ADV low suspension which has basically the same ground clearance as a normal GS. And on this low suspension ADV you can always set it in the HIGH suspension setting when you need more clearance.
I believe that there's no GS motorcycle with height-adjustable suspension.
I got a new 1290 SAS OTD 4 months ago for $16,500. Not only is that $8-10,000 cheaper than a GS, the bike is lighter, quicker and more fun in the twisties.

I purchased the GSA 1250 for the high range kilometers.I have a first ride around 360 km in a day, so my observation was that the GSA 1200 Lc was more economic????

Seats are different. I have a rental fleet of bikes ordered new. GSA has 2 cm higher stock seat (so half of the difference 85/87 - 89/91 is the seat) and it is a little more comfortable. So you can swap seat to make gsa lower. And it definitely has other ergonomic because of that. I am 198 cm and it is obviously for my knees.
I’m confused between BMW R 1250 GSA and Africa twin adventure sports. Can you please let me know your opinion on which one do you think is better and why? Thanks in advance.
I wish I could but Honda is mostly absent in my portfolio of bikes that I've ridden. Even though my first motorcycle was a Honda, then the brand had nothing that would trigger my interest and make me try to get on one of their bikes. Not sure I could even test ride it now. I gladly would though. I believe that there may be a huge gap between those motorcycles in reality. Honda being a younger brother here.

Thanks for kind words. And yes, BMW offer adjustable foot rests in an Adventure for example. Pretty sure you could install them on the regular GS too as an aftermarket accessory.

Hi! You drive on GS a lot, i new owner of this bike. Can You tell me, ( its my first BMW ), what do You think about clutch in LC models? Mine is very "difficult", on first ride many failed starts, clutch engengment point is very tight and far away from bar, i must learn about start in GS from beginning... i must add more rpms to start smooth. Did you have feels like me?
Yes, clutch may be also a bit "hard" and require some strong grip. Remember that you can adjust the lever itself and bring it closer to the handlebar for easier use.

Yes, I've owned Japanese bikes for over 10 years and this is where my opinion comes from. Maybe we're just the cases of "grass is greener everywhere else". Still, I don't mean reliability but the whole ownership experience.

I may be wrong, but that doesn't sound right. If the difference in length between them is only 1cm, and the GSA has more travel (meaning the fork extends a bit further than on the GS), then there wouldn't seem to be any difference between the frames themselves.

No, it won't. Standard GS 800 mm (low seat and low suspension), Adventure 820 mm (low seat and low suspension). Keep in mind low suspension has some minor negative influence on riding capabilities.

i'm 188 cm i got gs 1250 adv... but rally seat on hp version is too tall, i used the low seat from bmw and its perfection.. i can lower both feets fully.

As I am over 60YO I stop for a knee and back stretch every 2 hours max. In Europe and the western world, on the road network while touring, there is always a gas station within the GSs range. So why would I want to ride the rest of the time (I also commute in my GS) a big fat adventure motorcycle?
I can justify buying an adventure only if going on intercontinental and mainly off road trips. There it is king!

Thanks V! But what about the optional Sport suspension option upgrade that gives both front and rear suspension even more travel and ground clearance on the GS and GSA? I see their both available as an extra option for both models on the bmw-motoraad configurator even when the Rallye package is chosen.
That's a weird addition I think. Not sure what BMW is trying to achieve with it as it kind of gets in between the regular R1250GS and the Adventure.

Test rode gsa a couple months ago and rode both the Ktm SAS and gs yesterday..I loved both gs and gsa and found Ktm to feel alright but kind of low budget/ lacking detail quality. Gs was more flickable and sporty while gsa was stable and commanding..I’m torn.
Thanks for sharing. I myself am thinking about GS vs SAS/SAR pretty often as they're really cool but I can confirm that to me, BMW's quality and overall feel is also more impressive than KTM's. On the other hand, KTM's performance is something. If you're considering GS Adventure, let me suggest that instead of SAS, you try the R version of the 1290. There may be a surprise in terms of certain behaviors. It's not for high speed turns but if you're riding more at lower speeds, it can be surprisingly satisfying and also easy to control. GS vs GSA is a lot about your size. If you're below 190 cm tall, then I'd hesitate to go for the Adventure unless you're going to ride on the highways and won't have to deal with all the weight high from the ground. A matter of style is also there.

I’ll test ride them both back to back again and go from there..the turn signal debacle from Ktm that you love to point out is not acceptable to me either..totally agree w you. Very good comparison. I've been casually researching the two, thinking of replacing my Harley. At 5'9" and 31" inseam, I can not reach the ground unless I get the 'low' seat and put it in the lowest position. I would not want the low suspension version. Disappointing....
I am your height and have the low suspension. Makes riding more enjoyable for me.

Thanks and I'm glad that you like the video. Somewhere on the web there are simulators of what the inner leg curve needs to be on specific motorcycles. Not sure I recall the name of this parameter correctly though. Still, it may be worth for you to check that website and measure yourself to get proper information without the need of jumping on every single bike to know if it would make sense for you to ride it and be comfortable or not.

You can get one foot down, whit one foot on the back brake. That is the way to stop, anyway. You don't need both feet down. And it is a bad habit not to hold the bike still with the back brake.

i am 5 feet 6 inches tall or short ☺️ i am 22 and have been driving Bikes since 2009 ( the first very bike of my father), i am planning international motorcycle tours like probably crossing into many countries. Which 1 will u prefer in this case. 1250GS or GSA, and i might encounter some off roads but it will not be probably that bigger like made for rallies.
PLZ note, that my reach is higher which 70 or 71 inches.
Hi, if I were you, I think I'd go for the regular GS purely because of height. There are shorter riders that deal with GSA but I know that I myself prefer to feel that I'm in control and riding into different places and over different terrain, a shorter bike that's more manageable for me would be a big plus for me. You can still install a lower seat and even lower the suspension so there are plenty of options.
