A spear is generally a better weapon during war; they lack the "cool factor" of swords, but the ability to reach out and touch someone is highly underrated in a lot of these medieval movies that show everyone fighting with swords straight away when spears would have been the weapon of choice while swords were the weapon you pulled out after your spear got broken, grabbed, or stuck. Steel wasn't cheap, and spears required far less of it, while sharpened pikes required none of it.
It's kinda like 500 years from now, someone might make a movie showing soldiers storming the enemy with nothing but pistols during WW1, lol - movies get sooo much wrong!
