Composer and keyboard player Jules Maxwell makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2019/20 Season writing music and text for The Lost Thing, a co-production between The Royal Opera and Candoco.
Jules Maxwell is originally from Bangor, near Belfast. He is a composer and is currently the keyboard player for Dead Can Dance, with whom he toured worldwide on their Anastasis World Tour (2012/13). Over the last 30 years he has created music for leading choreographers including Wayne McGregor, Jasmin Vardimon, Jane Mason, Cathy Marston, Charlotte Darbyshire, Dog Kennel Hill Project, Charlotte Vincent, Theo Clinkard, Filip Van Huffel, Laila Diallo, Ben Wright, Hofesh Shechter and Jeanine Durning. At Shakespeare’s Globe he has written music for productions of Doctor Faustus (2012), Antony and Cleopatra (2013), The Merchant of Venice (2015/16) and Boudica (2017). He also wrote music for the National Theatre’s 2010 production of Drew Paultz’s Love the Sinner and composed the soundtrack to Tim Loane’s 1997 Oscar-nominated short film Dance Lexie Dance. He has collaborated with Duke Special on numerous recordings, shows and projects including Deborah Warner’s 2009 production of Mother Courage for the National Theatre.
Jules regularly collaborates with other artists and has worked extensively with the experimental theatre-maker Mark Storor and with the Belfast-based singer Foy Vance, for whom he composed the song ‘First of July’ which appeared on Vance’s debut album Hope. With Lisa Gerrard he contributed four songs to the album Boocheemish by the legendary Bulgarian female choir Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares. He has recorded five albums to date. Jules’s current projects and plans include a Life and Works World Tour with Dead Can Dance and the release of a new album with Lisa Gerrard, Burn.
