The Mechanics stethoscope,l use a long screwdriver putting the tip near the noisey part and the handle near my ear.Another good under $20.00 tool is an inner tie rod tool, looks like an exhaust clamp with teeth in it.l have one and worth every penny

Excellent advice and tool choice Jason. When you showed the magnet tool I immediately thought on the magnet tool I have. I bought off a Snap-On Toll truck in the late 80's and it was 30.00. I cried and sputtered about the cost but needed it so bought it. You never pay too much for quality as that magnet tool will still pick up a 3/4 drive ratchet and hold on to it.

Right on. Made in USA costs more. This Chinese crap will have to do for the price.

I purchased a stethoscope from Harbor Freight a number of months back. It works good enough. Just remember to use a little bit of care, 'cause the sounds you hear can be quite loud.

The trays use to be free at HFT with coupon and one tool that needs to be in every mechanics box is a good vaccum gauge...which most don't know how to use.

Great suggestions Jason, the only other one I would add especially for fellas and felletts working on modern rigs is a remote hose clamp tool, saves so much cursing and damaged hands when dealing with those Satan invented spring hose clamps.

Sorry I missed your comment before! As far as I can tell, when I had the heads rebuilt, the new springs may have been too strong for the old stock rockers and push rods. I replaced all pushrods and rocker arms and have had zero problems since in over 8000 miles!
