Hawai'i will see her people again, and the people will see Hawai'i again. They will not be apart forever. Thank you for posting this beautifully sung version of a beloved song.
I love this song, it's so beautiful yet so sad. The circumstances in which it was written are just so heart breaking. Poor Queen Liliʻuokalani having to say farewell to her people. Amy Hanaialiʻi does a great job of singing this song.
I learned this song for my grandfather to sing at his funeral he loved this song so much....and i listened to this over and over to learn it...thank you so much!
We sang this melody through tears to my mom bidding her farewell until we meet again in the next life. Here it is fifteen years later and this song gives me goosebumps.
From what I understood, Queen Liliuokalani wrote this song in 1878 after seeing a young couple embrace before making a final parting. It was from that vision where she wrote the song.
I love this song. Amy has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. When on vacation, they sang this song on the beach at Waikiki at an event. there and at the end of the program, they sang this song. An elderly Hawaiian woman came up to a group of us and made us all hold hands in a circle. We all sang out loud and we swayed back and forth, and at times she would sing Oli, Oli Oli at the end of a verse. It was the most beautiful evening and one of my fondest memories of Hawaii.
How beautiful! This extremely moving and beautiful mele brings back wonderful memories of the short time that I had on Oahu some years ago. I have made it one of my things to do, to visit Hawaii again and to spend a bit longer there than I did last time. I remember thinking at Honolulu Airport, as I was checking in to leave, how appropriate those words are. Aloha oe. Aloha!
Amy sings this song so beautifully...brought sweet tears to my eyes..To all my friends and family i have back home in hawaii...and fond memories of both my parents that have passed away..god bless them both..and to all the people back home on the islands..god bless you all..you all make what hawaii is all about..a loving land of rich culture...and beautiful people...Until we meet again..Aloha!
I worked on a catamaran out of the Hilton....this song played when we went out to greet the Big White Ship.. pretty spectacular i gotta tell ya. Blue sky and blue water and the Lurilene steaming around Diamond Head
Very nice and the photographs at the back, it make me remember the old photos from my father beeing in Hawaii! Hope to visit Hawaii one day! I enjoy this music a lot! Thanks for sharing! Mushísimas gracias!
Ah!! This rendition really tugs my heartstrings. It is so beautiful, and as I type this, I have a lump in my throat with the emotion it engenders. Thank you for sharing this gem.
I'm sorry but I just had to voice this out after seeing multiple comments misspelling the name of Hawaii's last queen. Her name is spelled, Queen Liliʻuokalani, and her English name is Lydia. This is one of the only tributes of respect that I can give to a queen who had lost almost everything.
just came home from Hawaii :( god, i never thought i'd miss that beautiful land that much! can't wait 'til i travel to hawaii again! :) loved to watch the hula hula :* greetings from sweden :D
I was living in HI for 4 years. I went to UH Manoa. The night before i left, my friends (more like OHANA to me) gave me and Uke...as a graduation gift. The first song the came to mind was this song...at the "Until we meet again.." i couldnt hold the tear any longer... I miss Hawaii
This is great. The song is so much better when it's sad, it has so much depth to it. My favorite rendition is the short one in Lilo and Stitch. That one was so chock full of emotion... Just the way it was intended.
If there's one song that reminds me of Hawaii, this is it. So very very beautiful but sad.... because I've heard this sung at a couple of Maori funerals. Thanks for posting
Amy Hanaiali'i fans should know that she appears in an award-winning comedy movie, "GET A JOB" which comes out in Fall of 2012. She appears along with many of the biggest names in Hawaiian entertainment including Willie K, her brother Eric Gilliom, Jake Shimabukuro, Henry Kapono, Augie T, Ernie Cruz Jr., Mick Fleetwood, Kealoha, and man more!
You have it exactly right. This is what this song is all about, nothing more. A fond embrace until we meet again. This is what Princess Liliʻuokalani meant when she wrote this song (mele in Hawaiian). BTW how are you and your momma. Did you meet again?
@kramerscape1 Actually she is singing this song as it was originally written. When Queen Liliuokalani wrote this song it was her way of saying goodbye to the Hawaiian Islands and her culture forever. She wrote "Aloha Oe" in 1878, in 1901 Hawaii became an American Territory owned mostly by rich American's. Her profound sadness is crystal clear in this version. Most musicians who did not know the story behind this song thought it too sad so they livened it up to what we hear today.

The most melancholy song I have ever heard. I can 't help but think about Hawai'i and shed a tear when I listen to this
The story behind this song, make's it so much more powerful.😥

Playing this for my father who loved Hawai'i so much. Miss you so much. A hui hou Kākou🌺☀️💝
The story of Hawaii is heartbreaking, and this song just sums it up.

Queen Liliuokalani must’ve been in tears when she wrote this song. 😢

I love listening to songs I dont understand. That way, I'm not so focused on the words and meaning, but the passion and beauty behind the singing
Wahnsinn, was für eine Stimme, ja, da kommt das Fernweh .....
This is the saddest piece of music to come out of Hawaii.......Moving as heck i tell ya.......
makes my eyes water......
Buried beneath this haole exterior lies a kamaaina heart, born again in Kauai. Amy, Mahalo Nui Loa
I wanna cry Dot,farewell to thee.
she sings with such feeling.
Beautiful
Maravillosa Canción Maravillosa Cantante
I'm not Hawaiian, I am Latin American, but my heart hurts a little every time I hear this song.
Damn I didn't expect this to make me cry. It didn't even make me think about anything, it just brought up my pain water.
I couldn't agree more. This song is sung in Chinese too by a very famous Chinese singer in the early 50's.
Really touching . . .
wow how sad and good this song is
Farewell to you, farewell to you
The charming one who dwells in the shaded bowers
One fond embrace,
'Ere I depart
Until we meet again
i love this song! i wish i could have heard it being performed by the Queen herself
manea manea nui vahine o havaiki, kia'orana e kia manuia

I heard this song at the germaine lua at the end of the night that is such a beautiful song.

Nagyon kedves:)
This song makes me cry everytime...
すみませんでした!ハワイアンておじいさんの音楽だと思ってました...切なくて泣きながら聞かせてもらいました。ありがとうございました。
gives me absolute chills. Always does. But this song always makes me sad, given the context when HM Queen Lili'uokalani wrote it. :-(
one of the songs of my people
its the words the meaning thhe rememberance of our queen that matters
Restore the sovereignty and independence of the Hawai'ian islands!
Nani nō ka leo. E ola mau ka mōʻī wahine. E ola mau e nā Hawaiʻi
she sings from her soul.......missing Our Jen-Aloha `Oe
Tears every time by the 5th note.
@heymanhaha Aloha, the whining sound is Hawaiian Steel Guitar (Lap Steel Guitar)
I understand the beauty
Of rose blossoms at Maunawili.
There the birds delight,
Alert the beauty of this flower
This was actually basically a letter from the last Hawaiian queen to her subjects. Basically saying goodbye and that she is sorry.
GOD SAVE HAWAII AND THE MOST BEAUTIFUL QUEEN OF THE WORLD FOR EVER AND EVER I LOVE YOU YOUR MAJERTY MAHALO
Amy you rock!
You've come a long way from MYT and BTG.
Makes me want to go to hawaii asap ):
Mahalo~
Thinking of you, Hiram. Aloha.
