Last winter i came face to face with a wolf. All i could see was the diamond white glow of its eyes, but the way it moved was like nothing I'd ever seen. It was behind the treeline, staring into the woods at me and my feline companions. It never blinked once in five minutes, in driving snow and frigid wind, and turned its head so slowly from side to side. I knew it was something unique. I spoke to it in soft tones, then turned my back and made my way home. Later that week a friend captured wolf tracks in the snow in a picture, and the local conservancy confirmed it as wolfsign. Perhaps a lone ranger. I am honored to have been in its presence.
