The label wanted to charge premium artist prices - $9.98 at that time. He was going to call the album $8.98 to make it very inconvenient when they put $9.98 stickers on it. That was the hard promises album. They also tried to make him look greedy in the Bankruptcy proceeding. They asked him what guitar he used expecting him to go into minute details. His response was "I have a red one. It sounds nice, so that's what we use." His deal with Shelter was that his contract could not be simply sold or transferred. Of course they did and that led to the battle because MCA declared they owned his music. In the end they gave him his own sub-label under MCA with a lot of Autonomy. When he released his first box set years later he priced it at $20 vs the 50 or 100 that others were asking for similar works. He always was about the fans being able to afford his music. Later still, when he heard his former bandmates in Mudcrutch were having financial issues he rejoined the band so they could benefit from his name and fanbase. He was a true champion of the little guy...
I feel for Tom Petty in those days. How much more easy would his fight have been had he owned his own studio? Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen really hit their stride after completing their studios and removing much cost and loss of control from their musical efforts. At the very least, Petty could have made that critical album much more economically.
I love Tom Petty, but maybe we could've got a shout out to his attorney. No shade on time but the legal strategy of declaring bankruptcy to avoid contract came from an attorney.
I will never understand why it ever got to the point to where only the record company and lawyers make money, while the artists struggle. How can a record company think they should be entitled to own the rights to someone's work.
what? i must be old the last concert i went to was AC/DC at the US air arena i don't think i paid a hundred bucks for 2 tickets. granted this was 30 years ago but still
What crappy editing. 100 words were 10 would have done the job. This is a two-minute story and it took you eleven minutes to tell it and make it boring.
dunno how it looks on other people's youtube page but when the thumbnail has a solid red line at the bottom it appears to look like a video i have already watched fully, so i basically ignore it. thought you might like that insight
Just so you know. This is an absolute mess of a video. Not only is it too long, everything is out of sequence. Just delete it and start over. Its awful.
The content should have made for a great story..... could have been a great story in even just 6 minutes.... this sucked so bad I now understand why it's 11 minutes.... yea 11 minutes because it had to be hard to take what should easily have been a great story and make it suck...
Please please use the amazing platform that can be RUclips to its advantages, not like this where you just do a generic vid that couldve been 3 minutes on any normal TV station. Also the voice is awful.
Now we need to rebel against RUclips accounts taking 2 minutes of info and turning it into an 11 minute video.
Can we make the same technology reduce the ramblings of my wife?
@@Rolexoryour a future episode of Dateline when she sees that lol
And here we are.
And maybe encourage creators to research correct pronunciation (I'm not necessarily referring to this video).
@ the amount of historians I see on here unable to pronounce words is disturbing.

Boosting your post because people can read it instead of watching the video.
‘I won’t back down’ song has far more meaning now.
Not a huge Tom Petty fan, but respected the man for his principles and his stand he took to protect artists.
I refuse to listen to robots........
Probably already have unfortunately.

The Zappa family did the same.
@@amateurmakingmistakes Frank Zappa helped Steve Vai build his first studio, with gear and (I believe) advice.
@@edwinstovall3334 Nice to know! It's great when people help others.
And then in only a few short years out came the CD for $14.98 which was the cheapest of all media to produce
He was living like a refuge.
thanks for the info. It's a bit repetitive but I didn't know this story. good on him.
You're very welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!

I too wondered where he got this great idea. No, I'm not an attorney, but my wife was.
Remember when there was a "record industry?" Ha ha ha ha ha!
No.

The absolute legend Tom Petty.
Amazing performer, saw him play and still remember it as one of best shows i have seen.
That’s cool 😎
Thank you, Tom Petty….
Now we have to battle against $500 and up concert tickets.
what? i must be old the last concert i went to was AC/DC at the US air arena i don't think i paid a hundred bucks for 2 tickets. granted this was 30 years ago but still
Unfortunately vinyl albums are now $20 plus for new releases.
Good writing ChatGPT

Where's the part about Tom having a multi- million dollar fortune yet succumbed to not being able to control his Drug intake....?

Why did this story need to be this length? It seems overly wordy...
JC! I could have edited this entire thing down to 2 mins. Also, hire a voice over artist and cut this Ai crap!
Poor editing. Repetitious. Too long.
Heartbreakers!
Is this video AI-generated? Is anything in this video actually true? The AI voice makes me suspicious.
3 minute story ...in epic 11 minutes....WTF?
I'm surprised they didn't give Tom Petty's entire life story before getting to the point.
Just so you know. This is an absolute mess of a video. Not only is it too long, everything is out of sequence. Just delete it and start over. Its awful.
As soon as I hear that AI generated diatribe, I just skip the posting. RUclips is not what it used to be & that’s a shame.
Is this some kind of AI crap? I want my time back.
I heard this guy won't back down.
Play at 2x speed. 🙄
Seems like Petty won't back down.
AND TOO MANY COMMERCIALS ‼️& INTERRUPTING. . . CONCERTS IN THE MIDDLE OF A SONG ‼️.

AI voice-over?
Seems like a good story, but I’m sorry I can’t watch it because the AI voice over is just getting so old
Tell the story straight. You start over 5 times, jeez.

Blah blah yawn
15 seconds in, I'm out.
Thanks for the update.
This is crap ! Are you kidding me ? What a waste of my time.
You don't happen to be a CEO of a major record label, do you?
Tapping out text to speech stinks
Bla bla bla !
