Note: WATCH THIS VIDEO COMPLETELY. For those commenting I only mentioned negatives, that’s not the case. The Nokia 9 PureView offers some incredible camera capabilities but the delays in processing and other elements that make this phone lag are not going to appeal or be right for mass market. Only for those serious photographers.

and that's exactly what this phone was made for. it was never meant for mass market, just for photography enthusiasts. which is also why calling it a flagship is incorrect. Well, there is some news that they will also release an 855 version of this phone. they released this one using the 845 chipset so that the chipset itself could be pushed to it's limits.

I don't get why people complain that a smart phone takes 30seconds to a minute to process 5 separate images and stich them into one. Considering there is no snapdragon chip to do that that Nokia had to had another processor chip to make it happen stop complaining. The phone still let's you take other image's while it's processing. The phone isn't meant for people who don't want to edit pictures but rather snap and post go get the pixel or Galaxy. The Nokia 9 is for people who want to take good pics and be able to edit them whether in JPEG or RAW.

To be quite honest, I'm a user of Nokia 9 and the only problem this camera setup really has is software. In automatic mode the phone tries to get ISO as high as possible for shutter speed to be as fast as possible. That's why when you switch to PRO mode you can get really impressive night shots just by setting everything by yourself.
Bad that you didn't mention ToF bokeh as an advantage - it's a killer feature. Yes, it's far from perfect, but it's one of the best that we have today.

This wasn't meant for point and shoot. It's for photographers. Yes the transition time is slow, the processing time is long and it's true that u might miss a moment. As far as I know there has only been one camera update to the device after it was launched. The others were stability fixes. So there definitely will be more updates.. there are no processors optimised for what this phone suppose to do..
As a phone itself, build is excellent, one of the best screens in the market, audio lack depth to be honest but loud, and everyday task is snappy. As a camera , this excels in the right hand, for those who takes time to get the right shot. Most reviewers think that this is a simple point and shoot device. It isn't. But the images it produces are among the best there is out there.

shansp3 not arguing the phone and the camera isn’t good. As I mentioned in the review even the camera elements like monochrome and the abundance of manual controls are like you said: In the right hands a powerful tool. However, this phone at least here in this part of the world isn’t marketed as a pro phone. Just a phone with 5 cameras and a massive push on the camera specs. That’s resulted in a lot of disappointed people expecting to get great shots in auto mode. I think Nokia needed to incorporate an easier auto mode since this is a widely available smartphone. That or amend the marketing to make it clear you need patience with this camera phone.

It's a bit ridiculous to what lengths people defend this phone. Yeah sure the pictures come out great every time the stars align, but if causes you to miss moments because the app takes forever to open or switch between modes, it's less useful than a flip phone with two megapixels. Processing time? Sure, a lot of data, you can keep taking pictures - fine, fair enough. But there really isn't a reason for the app to be so painfully slow. The "photographers" need hardware they can rely on.
Not to mention you can't even adjust focus in manual mode for whatever reason and it resets your settings if you tap to focus. "For photographers" my ass, HMD just can't make good software if their life depended on it.

@@EMKWANREVIEWS real life user here: I've had this phone since mid 2019 (moved to a Pixel 5 a few days ago).
Initially it was ok, although the Nokia 8 Sirocco performed way better. The initial Android 10 update (early 2020) was unusable and needed multiple daily restarts. They fixed it 6 months later, but battery life has been terrible since.
Also, that goddamn under screen finger print reader where you just about sprain your thumb setting it up. "oh, but you have face unlock". The problem with face unlock is if you use it to unlock the phone, the flashlight is then disabled for no reason whatsoever!!
Camera performance issues aside, there's just way too many silly little bugs and idiosyncrasies to recommend this phone. Especially at the price.
Oh. And if you use a third party app to record video (like trying to post an IG story) the audio is unusable, the only way to record usable audio is to use the camera app and share to IG from there.

I can agree with this, the 9 really is complicated, and as a long time photographer with $20000+ in gear I can say that the camera is the bad side of the phone. Nokia clearly is not able to get their software right (the problem is the color part, as you can see in monochrome images, the sharpness is excellent and images are very good looking, but in color RAW I´m unable to get the colors right), and this technology will probably be abandoned. They should have tried just one large monochrome and one color sensor like Huawei did. But otherwise it´s a great smartphone, very good loking, with clean Android experience, fast and strong, and I´m very happy with it. It´s price falls so fast, it was 5% cheaper when I bought it then when I decided to get it. The display is the best I´ve ever had, and music through headphones/BT is fantastic for a smartphone. The fingerprint scanner? I couldn´t care less. And the image quality straight from the phone is still more than enough for any social media.

I really like my Nokia 9, yes, the software had some issues when it was first released, but like the Nokia 8 Sirroco, Nokia was quick to release updates that fixed practically every issue that I’ve had. Now, the Nokia 9 does takes incredible pictures, it just took a while for them to iron everything out. Which for me wasn’t a major issue as I don’t use my phone’s camera much as I’m always carrying around either my Leica CL, Leica M 262, Leica D-Lux 7 or Sony RX100 VII, yes, I like Leica, hence the Nokia 9.
The newest update that was just released, “after this video was posted”, really has fixed the processing time, it’s still not perfect but more than usable, especially for quality you get out of it, which I believe is better than the iPhone 11 or Samsung Note 10. I will definitely be buying the Nokia 10.

At 450 pounds in the uk this phone is much better than the pixel 3a xl at 420
Better screen , better processor, better gpu , better build , android one pure google just like the pixel , better ram , better storage , same charging speeds , better build quality , waterproof design
I don’t know why review sites are so hard on the Nokia 9 , the camera takes better pics than my mate 20 pro , better textures , better details , better dynamic range , better pixel quality
There are videos showing the camera whopping the p30 pro in raw and jpeg
My mate 20 pro is on eBay ,and in my opinion the Nokia 9 is the most under rated device ever maybe
The fingerprint reader does suck , the battery could be better , the charging could be faster but the Nokia 9 at 450 is much better than any of the pixel phones in my humble opinion and that camera is great

I still wish Lumia phones are back. I'm still using my 730 for email and surfing. The battery was best with Nokia phones. After the partnership with Zeiss the camera improved or even better than Sony. I still remember the N71 with 5MP camera. I took so many photos with that. At least Nokia brand was justified by MS and now HMD. But the recent phones are low on battery. I have not used any Nokia phone with Android but hope they increase the size of the battery too. They can start to lead the market again.

I don't like a slow phone too and I don't shoot in jpg anymore. So that kind of issue will really affect my decisions of buying it. No matter how much great the camera is, I would rather use a DSLR and be that photography genius on using so many MANUAL setups than relying on AUTOMATIC functioning of everything. Yes, it does shoot a very impressive photo but the fact that that phone does it automatically will never rival the DSLR users like me when talking about talents.

I am looking to buy this phone and jump into your review. The problem I have is that you started mentioning the interesting camera array features, which by the way is based on a camera names Light, which introduces a nontraditional camera lens array. Now when you go to the detailed analysis you bring issues that are of a traditional phone camera. For example, RAW file latency when storing files ?...I think the lag is normal, on the backstage, the camera is stitching photos and recording it in raw format, even my professional camera Sony A7RII takes some time with a high-speed flashcard. So here the analysis needs to be taken from a different approach, I think!. The camera menus explanation is helpful because yes I can see that setting can take time but again is using the same comparison as a normal camera phone. With 5 Lenses and 2 monochromes, I think this phone is not for everyone, but for users that want to have a more instrumental camera in their phone for a specific purpose. Thanks again my comments are intended to add value to the discussion and I am trying to make a decision to buy it. Cheers

This is ridiculous, this camera is absolutely superior by quality. Grandpa Daniel remembers waiting a week or 24 hour "Quickphoto" development for absolutely shitty images in comparison just 15 years ago. Even professional cameras were worse and you most of the times had to transport the film manual with your thumb. You aways missed photos (and I still do). 3 seconds for processing such image quality is incredible.
