I got a 81 MAICO 490 fron Rex last night. Amazing to meet the legend. While taking time off building motorcycles he had several underprivileged kids riding his track when i was there. A true Champion still giving today.
I used to ride at Rocket Rex’s house out in Applevalley Ca when I was much younger. He had this huge T-Rex 🦖 statue in his front yard. He showed me how to go through any whoop section with ease. He once smoked me on a 80cc and I was riding on a 125cc on his supercross track it was like I was the one on the 80cc how he blasted past me. Last time I seen Mr. Stanton he was a plumber running his own business. What a great guy and a legends have met and known.
Congratulations, Rex. Unfortunately, I don't remember if I ever met Rex... I used to talk to DeCoster, Donnie Hansen, Jeff Stanton, Jim Holley and a lot of local pro's in California. I wish I had met Rex, he has an incredible story and thank you MXA for sharing this video. Oh, the days cigarette companies sponsored MX and Harley Davidson had a dirt bike 👍😎❤
Very nice and very well done . Always enjoyed telling any who would listen I was in the same race meeting with Rocket Rex Staten camel international 1983 and 84. As a young apprentice Mechanic I loved Rex's radio advert here in SA . Went something like this . I have been riding Yamaha for 6 years now .Won't ride nothing but Yamaha" Stay well all regards Tom Brennan.
With the exception of maybe Pierre, who had a lot of pressure on him, the entire field of US pro motocross in the 70’s was an inspiration. Some of the most down to earth people you would ever meet. I think Torsten set an example, and that tone of being truly a decent person to everyone you met at the races prevailed. I learned a lot from them about what a pro really was. Rex and Steve Stackable were two of my favorites.
The stories are cool. Soooo.... Here's mine. Rob Selvy (RIP my good friend, love you and miss you brother) was a legendary 3-Wheeler motor builder. Rob built two wicked Selvy WURKS motors for my Tecates. Well I sent Rob a B1 KXT shock to rebuild. He was having trouble, so he said he had a friend coming by to help him out. It was Rocket Rex. Rob showed Rex I was a bullrider, bunch of pictures. Rex freaked out that, that was so cool. Rex was a tough guy, and seen me getting my lunch ate by some pictures, and Rob showed him my champion buckles: "Let's get this done for Robby!, this is a bad little motherf*cker". LOL! So I have an original old school Rob Selvy WURKS decal with 'Rocket Rex' signature #1 on it. He was a cool guy and a great racer.
I'm surprised no one mentioned the epic battles with Rex and Jim West in the open pro class at Carlsbad and Saddleback racing with CMC. Rex was riding a Maico for Holiday Honda back in 73 and Jim on his Husky.....the good ole days of motocross and how I miss those glorious early years of motocross especially in So. Cal
A lot of the info in this show is Not correct. Too many mistakes to list. The one mistake at the end stands out (he was a fill in rider for mike bell) no no , rex was a full factory rider for Yamaha for 7 years after that fill in year. And he won Daytone 2 times.
Rex was most know for his ability to destroy motocross bikes. The legend back in the day was that he needed way more repair parts than anyone else because if it could be broken Rex would break it. Rocket man!!!

It would have been worth mentioning that Rex had a Factory ride with Yamaha for 8 Years under contact. 1978 through 1985.
I'll never forget being 9yrs old and meeting Rex at his parents house and he gave me a Bell Moto3 helmet. A super nice guy
Yep.. I'd go there all the time and he would give me a stack of rex Staten stickers. His mom was extremely nice

I met Rocket Rex in St. Louis for a Trans-Am in 1977. He was a very down to earth guy.

I was just talking to Rex down at Langston motorsports last weekend, heck of a guy still going strong.

Pretty cool 😀
Dead Man's Point Finest Rider !
" Beaver Retreever "
I wish I could find on here where he led DeCoster at the usgp. They were fantastic. Seemed 3rd place was so far behind in those early laps.
Rocket Rex
That’s him and my mom at 14:39!
This same bike almost ran me over yesterday 👌👌
I worked with rocket hes a plumber for Murray hood dude
Sad the pay they use to get. He should have been able to retire, like the riders now. Rocket Rex was awesome !
