VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky ( / simonostrovsky , and contributor Jake Adelstein ( / jakeadelstein ) joined On The Line to discuss the new documentary “Schoolgirls for Sale in Japan.”
In our exclusive investigation, VICE News host Simon Ostrovsky went to one of Tokyo's busiest neighborhoods, where girls solicit clients in their school uniforms. Last year the US State Department, in its annual report on human trafficking, flagged so-called joshi-kosei osanpo dates (that's Japanese for "high school walking") as fronts for commercial sex run by sophisticated criminal networks. In our report, schoolgirls involved in the rent-a-date industry reveal how they've been coerced into prostitution.

Jake Adelstein was very clear and concise and delivered quality information. Thanks!
Alter boys for sale in the Vatican
Children for sale at Parliament and Washington DC
***** No I know har har har priests rape kids I get it.
***** as well as Rusian, Bulgarian, Romanian boys and girls, and just girls in Germany, Netherlands.
Hubie Thompson Look up Greville Janner. Par for the course, and all connected to monsters like Epstein in the US and his kiddie prostitution ring. Noticed how he disappeared from the news so quickly?
I'm hip to Epstein and that circle of shit, they all should be blinded. Clintons involved with them also and the Vatican is the biggest offender for centuries. With all the information available to the public I am personally disgusted at the stupidity of humanity and anyone that hasn't left the catholic church by now. At least it wasn't my kid is the mindset of these sheep. The media is controlled so the ill deeds of these people and those like them are buried and shit like Bruce Jenner be transformed into Frankenstein is the flavor of the day. I refuse to accept this shit or be a part of ignorance. Stay strong my friend.
I love how they act like young men aren't sexualized around the world either. Pretty sure boy bands were, and still are a thing. What about the female clothing brands that have giant half naked men on their merch. It's practically pornography.
John Witherspoon Yeah but you can't say that, because then the feminists will get butthurt and go apeshit.
John Witherspoon Just because it wasn't mentioned here, in a video made expressly about a particular issue, doesn't mean that no one is talking about issues that concern you.
People can be concerned about more than one thing at a time.
What is your point?
+John Witherspoon If you honestly feel young men are sexualized as much as younger or older women in general, you are sorely mistaken.Just because you see one or two male model calendars and some merch with shirtless men does not mean it's equal. If you compare it to the tons of magazines with naked women in every store, the gaming industry profiting heavily off of T&A (specifically the Japanese gaming industry),and female music artists always being half naked or twerking to get an album sale now...you wouldn't even be attempting to make this argument.
kuroshinigami Yes, I am saying men and women are equally sexualized. It's called marketing.
Who is here after watching Tokyo Vice? Jake is the man!
Some serious "vocal fry" on that first one. I'd imagine that's a pretty common trait among Vice's viewers.
Would love to see VICE do a segment on "Young boys of the Vatican".
@38:58 Simon's face SAYS IT ALL!! I could not stop laughing
but yeah. this certainly is a horrible thing and these people who threaten, blackmail and outright force girls to do this should certainly go to jail.
say this as a giant weaboo so

i like turtles
Yes, quite
I'm glad Simon is OK, I noticed he hadn't been on any of the dispatches from Ukraine lately and I was hoping he didn't get snatched up by the KGB or something lol
Is Simon banned from entering Russia?
Miles Prower Did you get poisoned in McDonald's?
Jon Smith what
the
fuck?
FCCO Its you again.
You moron American and Russia have alot in commob.
Jon Smith lmao what.
FCCO Yeah me to, fuckface.
I think it would have been interesting to ask some random people on the street what they thought of the girls who were standing around handing out the flyers. To try to get a feel for how desensitized people were to their presence. See if you could get a feel for common views on them being there selling what they were, and if people had any idea how much further it went in some cases beyond just a simple walk around the block. Then again it's Japan, so probably not that easy to get enough people to respond to make a practical thing to have included.
"It's actually folded" Nice pun kek.
Simon was not impressed.
Utherix I thought it was funny, and it was just improved because of the lack of reaction haha.
really interesting thank you for answering the questions. I watched the Schoolgirl documentary beforehand and its hard to pin down what is so disturbing about it, even when the girls aren't doing anything more than talking or walking. It's clearly creepy but when I was explaining it to my friend I couldn't really get across why.
On a separate note it's nice to see Mr. Ostrovsky in something new. I followed his Ukraine dispatches and it's good to see him asking uncomfortable questions somewhere else. Good luck
Just love Simon!! "He as a kind heart"!!
Mr.Otrovosky.I hope you go to Ukraine one last time and finish strong in the conflict that you started reporting. But anyways respect for what you done and hope you enjoyed your break in Japan.
Good doc. an internal view on business and human desire
When a reporter that was kidnapped in the middle of a fucking war says something is weird and uncomfortable... then, damn, your shit is fucked up.
Fix yourself Japan, you have nice food!
Interesting Vera good conversations

***** boring
***** Jesus, quit lying to everyone jeez....
VICE News Great upload! Very informative & full of intellectual questions.
***** I think these two should go into the fact that Israelis runs the world's largest programs when it comes to trafficking women. How about that? Think they'd step up? Or maybe Hollywood will stick to making movies showing "Albanians" as the biggest offenders, never mind those horrible Japanese and their cultural proclivities?
Spiro T Cheney vice tv is also controlled media, I have caught a video questioning ebola edited to cover up the bullshit ebola epidemic
Why are you playing clips from the main video to the people on Skype? I mean they already watched that, so whats the point, advertisement?
Simon has contempt for this format but a paycheck is a paycheck.
Kyle P Simon is a Zionist, so issues that don't further NATO, or Israel is a waste in his mind.
Kyle P Are you alluding to his 'annoyed' demeanour throughout this segment? Because Simon says himself towards the end that he really disliked covering the entire subject and throughout all his interviews with those 'schoolgirls' he wished he was somewhere else. He's also banned from working in/entering Russia at the moment, so I doubt he's all that satisfied going from covering a conflict of international concern to interviewing 16-year-olds as a 34 year old, premature-hair-greying man.
Cwikstopher Bitchems Dealing with SJWs is worse than covering a War. I'm sure he suffered more PTSD speaking with these people.
Cwikstopher Bitchems thats all true but I dont think he enjoys talking with hipster douches. Hes a frontline reporter who brushes off getting kidnapped like its nbd.
Kyle P hahahhaa brilliant
I was on the live-stream! I watched this in Hard-rock-cafè!
Jon Smith I felt amazing! and a little more intelligent, because without his documentary, I wouldn't have known that this was a problem.
As someone who actually studies Japanese culture and politics I am suprised by how okayish this documentary is (for vice standards).
I do not understand the negative backlash of some people who clearly have no clue abiut Japan.
The interviewers disclaimed that only Japan is being oversexualizing its girls. Also they argumented really well why it is okay to critisize the situation in Japan - since Japan has signed various contracts on human trafficing etc.
Justifying prostitution as "geisha culture" is incorrect. Oversexualization of young girls started in Heian-era, but the culture of Geisha - who I must say were NOT concubines but simply entertainers - started later in Taisho/ Edo period.
Also the laws on child abuse and protection of minors in Japan are really looses, so we have another point to critisize.
Age of consent is 13, yes but that does not justify human trafficing and forced prostitution.
In the end the very developed "shame culture" is not only sexist, it is contributing to many girls being excluded from society etc.
Weebs will be like no japan is perfect stuff like this doesn't happen in japan.
Simon works for the us state department and vice news is a government program.
I wasn't going to comment originally but anyways... When I originally saw the first video link on the channel I actually found myself avoiding watching the video due to the "awkward" content in the video, (which got me curious as to why I was avoiding it) which got me thinking of the bigger picture. If I am sitting home alone and I find content like this somewhat awkward to address then it is likely there's other people with similar thinking. As a result maybe one of the reasons why there is so much trouble with dealing with this problem is because people find it hard to talk about it, and going out of your way to learn about it, when it maybe doesn't negatively affect you personally. Which might influence people to think it may just be easier to not learn about it and ignore it, convincing themselves that there actually isn't a problem because that is easier than the truth.
I agree that 'education' is the way to solve this. How did the girls feel 'isolated' at home and school in the first place? Who made them feel abandoned that they were vulnerable enough to get 'duped' into tis trap by scheming adults? That was the root of the problem, right? Why was there no compassionate teacher to help them - why didn't anyone come to the aid of these 'isolated' girls before they got into harm?
Great vid, Jake was one of the best spoken reporters I've ever seen! Expecially when he is being hosted by a guy who dramatizes everything in a really immature way lol. But thanks to Jake, this was overall a very in lightening talk about alot of real issues that need to be spoken about everywhere!
With the 2020 Olympics happening in Japan, their politicians have really been keeping an eye on what the rest of the world says about them, and this is the time when real change can occur more than ever!
Why do all your vids on Japan/SK focus on sexual topics?
Simon, uncomfortable and intimidated by Japanese school girls. However completely fine with journalism while bullets are wizzing by his head and returns to the same warzone after being abducted.....mildly perturbed. Awesome.
I want to defend Japan so much with this video but sadly I can see that the video's is not targeting only Japan and not descriminating it either, its just telling a sad truth and all countries have their darker sides. So even though I love Japan, this is a very honesty and good video, thank you VICE for your honesty! I often see video's with alot of bias but I saw none here.
Until he said that part about AKB48... It really pisses me off that people will judge a musical group when they don't even have a fucking clue about them because they are not a fan. They do NOT only do what they do because of men, they are actually very well like by younger people because they are pop stars. He was so fucking wrong, many who graduate become actresses or solo singers because of the TALENT agency they are from. People can say all they want about AKB48 as a whole group but 5 people out of hundreds and hundreds of people is not very many at all.
+SymphonicAngel Na these guys no shit about Japanese culture. The have info on sex trafficking but they are comparing the High level stuff with the low level stuff.
In japan its legal to have sex at age 13 as i know?
Yeah if they both under 18 its okay.Noone will point fingers at them l
kuraironin its 18.
kuraironin These girls were 13?! Watched the whole thing, I guess I missed it. I'd say 16 and up should be alright, but 13 is crossing the line.
Edit: Oh, the guy above says it's bullshit. I should've known... nevermind.
The Japanese Penal Code sets a minimal age of consent of 13.[37] However, all prefectures and districts have (largely similar) "obscenity ordinances" (淫行条例) that forbid "fornication" (淫行) with anyone under 18 years of age, but exempt sex in the context of a sincere romantic relationship (typically determined by parental approval).[38]
The age of marriage is 16 for girls and 18 for boys, with parental consent, or 20 otherwise.
kuraironin Seems reasonable. I don't know why bring up 13 in the first place. Made it sound like some of these JK girls were 13.
9:13 made me cringe.... yikes hahaha
@15:57 except on December 7, 1941?
Why is it uncomfortable to talk to a girl. The suggestive and subjective language in the video is the problem I had. The age of the girls is not listed or said. I have one of those magazines and the women start at 22 to 40+ housewives.
Ostrovsky and Adelstein are a good match, in my opinion
That’s funny cuz to me they seem like they dislike each other …
Indeed, sex trafficking of underage boys is also of international concern, but that's like telling a charity for the blind that deaf people need help too -it's not invalidating, just irrelevant. Simon has insisted that his coverage was not about judging Japanese culture, but investigating and giving an overview of the entire 'schoolgirl' culture and the underlying sex industry.
Cwikstopher Bitchems See we can say this. But If you say "all lives matter" you're a racist, and if the sex roles were reversed, you're a sexist for not mentioning women.
Just a fun fact vice, i browse around the internet and found a couple of videos of AKB48's concert. Where.... I guess, they do it nude. They did a live concert without any clothes ofc. Check it out
This jake adelstein seems fishy i read his book and it is a good read but if you take a step back alot of it of it seems to be made up or at least vastly exaggerated. The most obvious beeing his story about "helena" who was supposedly murdered.
If you read the piece by peter hessler you get the sense that he cant be taken seriously with many of his former colleagues calling him a liar.
His newest works are atleast clearly marked fiction.
MrHoodey His work in the wake of the tsunami and the fukushima disaster also dont speak for his journalistic capability.
wow would have guessed Simon to be easily over 40
jeesus, I can't believe Simon is that close to my age. He looks so much older. Take care of yourself, bro.
+Lokugawa I I imagine all of that kidnapping, being in the midst of civil war,and probably doing the bullet dance often doesn't aid in aging well lmao.
Since when is it news that sex sells?
TO SUM IT ALL UP:
Simon Ostrovsky is a 34 year old man with pre-maturedly-gone-grey hair.
OMG, why don't you do a documentary on really horrible abuse of women in Saudi Arabia!! Frankly, I'm more disturbed by how Americans go into other countries and judge the people. How would you like it if the Japanese came to America and judged the evil things done such as the extreme gun violence.
41 minutes wtf man.....
And one bitch took like half the video
Why is this a big deal there are far worse things going on wtf
Japan is a country with quirky culture. To change that culture will take a while.
''Who whats to be that guy?!''
Simon is the best journalist out there! This little vacation of his is over now, lol. The world wants him back on the war fronts. Ukraine to the South China sea. Best of luck to you Simon & Your camera man.
FallenStar I'm sure you do want him there, but that shit is stressful as fuck. My mate is one of Australia's only war photographers and he suffers from PTSD from all the shit he has to see and go through.
This guy is the exact portrait of a neighbor that will call the 911 for any reason if he sees you or your parked car inside
Я Кремлёвский бот,где работа для меня? XDD
Тимур Болуров сати Путина
This is a paid hit piece by the the big record labels they're scared to death of jpop and pop. Follow the money.
you say they want the questions before press conferences thats what Obama wants too
Compensated dating began in the nineties in japan? How about its been there forever. =)
Correct. It started with Geisha culture in Late taisho and early Edo-Period. STill Geishas were entertainers and not prostitutes. Geisha culture does not justify nowadays trends.
Simon, Ukraine. Please go back?
Simon interviews SJWs who are offended by everything for nearly an hour..
That's basically the video; I'm sorry for spoiling it for new viewers.
***** I have to disagree, it's not a big enough problem to be concerned about. There are children being exploited in worse conditions and in larger numbers in the Middle East, India and much of Africa.
From what I see most of these guys go to these places in Japan for paid social interaction and most of the female workers are consenting to this activity. Are some of them taken advantage of? Yes. The Japanese Government is already handling the parts of this practice that cause actual harm.
If we want to criticize Japan, we should do a story on their Whaling Industry, not about an obscure brothel.
>Adelstein
why dont u care bout ur daughts??.....
Stop trying to push morals on other cultures
gb2 Ukraine
although particular circumstances might be off-putting to some of us, the whole "underage" part is so bloody arbitrary. think of it this way: if you're 17-years-and-364-days old it's illegal (i'm not sure if it actually is illegal in japan? was this clarified?) but the following day it's not, the very next day it becomes legal; 11:59 it's illegal, 12:00 it's not... pretty absurd if you think about it. nonetheless, if both parties consent what's the problem? and why is it that uninvolved parties assume it's any of their business and treat it as if it is their business?
I dunno.. Still sounds like 'Murican's believing they know whats best in the world and believe they have a right to save Japan from Japan. I might offer a more vigorous defense of Japan but I hear these nefarious goings on are barred to gaijins. Soapland sounds like tha bomb, but I hear that I'll never get a chance to know it.. so.. meh..
Wow!! 34 eh? I would never have guessed it. Why do you feel uncomfortable? That sweet young thang was actually hella cute and seemed into you 'fo realz'.. Just lean back and soak up the adoration, it'll really make you feel good and there aint nothin' wrong with feeling good about feeling good! Look, but dont touch! touch but dont taste! Taste but dont chew! Chew but dont swallow..n-all that jazz.. It's doable..
I recall roadside "bikini" coffee shacks which seem to attract middle-aged men who want to buy coffee from 20 year old women wearing corsettes. But in Japan, this tendency seems greatly amplified. I suspect that we're emerging from barbarism, but our world still seems very barbaric to me.
Simon, back to the Eastern front!! why do you lose your time with such documentaries about cute, little, sexy, underaged school girls with asian features... OK, maybe you need some serious time-off, but don't let the important news slip off. You are my journalist star
>Get called out on an anti-japan documentary that applies western standards to a different culture
>Backpedals, claiming the point was to discuss underage sex
>Age of consent in Japan is 13
>All girls in the documentary were clearly over 13
Many Vice employees have admitted their biases, so why is this one so afraid to admit his?
holy shit what? I didn't know that
Most of japan the age of consent is 18. The only reason it is as low as it is in some places the political power wielded by the profiting from selling little girls sexuality. Also don't try that western standards bullshit. If they did not have laws against selling infants for sex or allowed random killing of gaijin would you say that was ok too? Even better go on social medial and make sure ever body knows you are ok and like the idea of 13 year olds as sex objects. Don't back pedal now. Next go to japan and stare at some young girls until the police pick you up and beat a confession out of you. Japanese police really do love to hit foreigners they even remotely think are guilty..
Jews gon Jew
