VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky ( / simonostrovsky , and contributor Jake Adelstein ( / jakeadelstein ) joined On The Line to discuss the new documentary “Schoolgirls for Sale in Japan.”
In our exclusive investigation, VICE News host Simon Ostrovsky went to one of Tokyo's busiest neighborhoods, where girls solicit clients in their school uniforms. Last year the US State Department, in its annual report on human trafficking, flagged so-called joshi-kosei osanpo dates (that's Japanese for "high school walking") as fronts for commercial sex run by sophisticated criminal networks. In our report, schoolgirls involved in the rent-a-date industry reveal how they've been coerced into prostitution.

I'm hip to Epstein and that circle of shit, they all should be blinded. Clintons involved with them also and the Vatican is the biggest offender for centuries. With all the information available to the public I am personally disgusted at the stupidity of humanity and anyone that hasn't left the catholic church by now. At least it wasn't my kid is the mindset of these sheep. The media is controlled so the ill deeds of these people and those like them are buried and shit like Bruce Jenner be transformed into Frankenstein is the flavor of the day. I refuse to accept this shit or be a part of ignorance. Stay strong my friend.

I love how they act like young men aren't sexualized around the world either. Pretty sure boy bands were, and still are a thing. What about the female clothing brands that have giant half naked men on their merch. It's practically pornography.

John Witherspoon Just because it wasn't mentioned here, in a video made expressly about a particular issue, doesn't mean that no one is talking about issues that concern you.
People can be concerned about more than one thing at a time.

+John Witherspoon If you honestly feel young men are sexualized as much as younger or older women in general, you are sorely mistaken.Just because you see one or two male model calendars and some merch with shirtless men does not mean it's equal. If you compare it to the tons of magazines with naked women in every store, the gaming industry profiting heavily off of T&A (specifically the Japanese gaming industry),and female music artists always being half naked or twerking to get an album sale now...you wouldn't even be attempting to make this argument.

I think it would have been interesting to ask some random people on the street what they thought of the girls who were standing around handing out the flyers. To try to get a feel for how desensitized people were to their presence. See if you could get a feel for common views on them being there selling what they were, and if people had any idea how much further it went in some cases beyond just a simple walk around the block. Then again it's Japan, so probably not that easy to get enough people to respond to make a practical thing to have included.

Kyle P Are you alluding to his 'annoyed' demeanour throughout this segment? Because Simon says himself towards the end that he really disliked covering the entire subject and throughout all his interviews with those 'schoolgirls' he wished he was somewhere else. He's also banned from working in/entering Russia at the moment, so I doubt he's all that satisfied going from covering a conflict of international concern to interviewing 16-year-olds as a 34 year old, premature-hair-greying man.

As someone who actually studies Japanese culture and politics I am suprised by how okayish this documentary is (for vice standards).
I do not understand the negative backlash of some people who clearly have no clue abiut Japan.
The interviewers disclaimed that only Japan is being oversexualizing its girls. Also they argumented really well why it is okay to critisize the situation in Japan - since Japan has signed various contracts on human trafficing etc.
Justifying prostitution as "geisha culture" is incorrect. Oversexualization of young girls started in Heian-era, but the culture of Geisha - who I must say were NOT concubines but simply entertainers - started later in Taisho/ Edo period.
Also the laws on child abuse and protection of minors in Japan are really looses, so we have another point to critisize.
Age of consent is 13, yes but that does not justify human trafficing and forced prostitution.
In the end the very developed "shame culture" is not only sexist, it is contributing to many girls being excluded from society etc.

I wasn't going to comment originally but anyways... When I originally saw the first video link on the channel I actually found myself avoiding watching the video due to the "awkward" content in the video, (which got me curious as to why I was avoiding it) which got me thinking of the bigger picture. If I am sitting home alone and I find content like this somewhat awkward to address then it is likely there's other people with similar thinking. As a result maybe one of the reasons why there is so much trouble with dealing with this problem is because people find it hard to talk about it, and going out of your way to learn about it, when it maybe doesn't negatively affect you personally. Which might influence people to think it may just be easier to not learn about it and ignore it, convincing themselves that there actually isn't a problem because that is easier than the truth.

I agree that 'education' is the way to solve this. How did the girls feel 'isolated' at home and school in the first place? Who made them feel abandoned that they were vulnerable enough to get 'duped' into tis trap by scheming adults? That was the root of the problem, right? Why was there no compassionate teacher to help them - why didn't anyone come to the aid of these 'isolated' girls before they got into harm?

Until he said that part about AKB48... It really pisses me off that people will judge a musical group when they don't even have a fucking clue about them because they are not a fan. They do NOT only do what they do because of men, they are actually very well like by younger people because they are pop stars. He was so fucking wrong, many who graduate become actresses or solo singers because of the TALENT agency they are from. People can say all they want about AKB48 as a whole group but 5 people out of hundreds and hundreds of people is not very many at all.

The Japanese Penal Code sets a minimal age of consent of 13.[37] However, all prefectures and districts have (largely similar) "obscenity ordinances" (淫行条例) that forbid "fornication" (淫行) with anyone under 18 years of age, but exempt sex in the context of a sincere romantic relationship (typically determined by parental approval).[38]
The age of marriage is 16 for girls and 18 for boys, with parental consent, or 20 otherwise.

Indeed, sex trafficking of underage boys is also of international concern, but that's like telling a charity for the blind that deaf people need help too -it's not invalidating, just irrelevant. Simon has insisted that his coverage was not about judging Japanese culture, but investigating and giving an overview of the entire 'schoolgirl' culture and the underlying sex industry.

***** I have to disagree, it's not a big enough problem to be concerned about. There are children being exploited in worse conditions and in larger numbers in the Middle East, India and much of Africa.
From what I see most of these guys go to these places in Japan for paid social interaction and most of the female workers are consenting to this activity. Are some of them taken advantage of? Yes. The Japanese Government is already handling the parts of this practice that cause actual harm.
If we want to criticize Japan, we should do a story on their Whaling Industry, not about an obscure brothel.

although particular circumstances might be off-putting to some of us, the whole "underage" part is so bloody arbitrary. think of it this way: if you're 17-years-and-364-days old it's illegal (i'm not sure if it actually is illegal in japan? was this clarified?) but the following day it's not, the very next day it becomes legal; 11:59 it's illegal, 12:00 it's not... pretty absurd if you think about it. nonetheless, if both parties consent what's the problem? and why is it that uninvolved parties assume it's any of their business and treat it as if it is their business?

I dunno.. Still sounds like 'Murican's believing they know whats best in the world and believe they have a right to save Japan from Japan. I might offer a more vigorous defense of Japan but I hear these nefarious goings on are barred to gaijins. Soapland sounds like tha bomb, but I hear that I'll never get a chance to know it.. so.. meh..
Wow!! 34 eh? I would never have guessed it. Why do you feel uncomfortable? That sweet young thang was actually hella cute and seemed into you 'fo realz'.. Just lean back and soak up the adoration, it'll really make you feel good and there aint nothin' wrong with feeling good about feeling good! Look, but dont touch! touch but dont taste! Taste but dont chew! Chew but dont swallow..n-all that jazz.. It's doable..

I recall roadside "bikini" coffee shacks which seem to attract middle-aged men who want to buy coffee from 20 year old women wearing corsettes. But in Japan, this tendency seems greatly amplified. I suspect that we're emerging from barbarism, but our world still seems very barbaric to me.

Simon, back to the Eastern front!! why do you lose your time with such documentaries about cute, little, sexy, underaged school girls with asian features... OK, maybe you need some serious time-off, but don't let the important news slip off. You are my journalist star

    >Get called out on an anti-japan documentary that applies western standards to a different culture
    >Backpedals, claiming the point was to discuss underage sex
    >Age of consent in Japan is 13
    >All girls in the documentary were clearly over 13
Many Vice employees have admitted their biases, so why is this one so afraid to admit his?

Most of japan the age of consent is 18. The only reason it is as low as it is in some places the political power wielded by the profiting from selling little girls sexuality. Also don't try that western standards bullshit. If they did not have laws against selling infants for sex or allowed random killing of gaijin would you say that was ok too? Even better go on social medial and make sure ever body knows you are ok and like the idea of 13 year olds as sex objects. Don't back pedal now. Next go to japan and stare at some young girls until the police pick you up and beat a confession out of you. Japanese police really do love to hit foreigners they even remotely think are guilty..
