Even if they do offer sick days, they aren't required provide paid time off. Many times people have to go in sick as they can't afford to lose their job. Here people can get fired for any or no reason here, as long as it's not due to things like their disability, race, age, sexual orientation, etc.
Seriously, since when did being a responsible parent have negative consequences in the workplace? After a person punches out, their time becomes their own. Any good parent, male or female, puts their children ahead of drinking with coworkers.
Well in the US, they passed laws to protect parents from this senerio. Many women would get fired because they had to care for children. They even were denied promotions due to the company wanted salary employees instead of hourly.

Also, check your company's written employee guidelines; it's ridiculous how many bosses don't know / care about what the company policy and state laws say you're entitled to. Finally: if you live in the US, you do NOT need to explain or justify your time off. At the most, your company policy may say you need a doctor's note to qualify for paid sick leave or not get in trouble for unplanned time off, or you may need to fill out some paperwork with a bare-bones explanation of the circumstance, to qualify for Family & Medical Leave. Yours and your family's personal health info is none of your employer's business, and you don't need to declare what's wrong or divulge a diagnosis; a medical note only needs to state whose care you're under and how long you're expected to be out.
