I work in sewage treatment. Don’t flush anything that isn’t toilet paper, water, or something that came out of your body. Even if these wipes tear apart relatively easily after being in water for a couple of weeks, it’s going to cause problems. On mains sewers it usually takes less than 24hrs for your waste to reach a treatment site, so any wipes that say they are flushable will still be pretty much solid and will just cause issues for us

I don't recommend flushable wipes. I did recommend Cottonelle after seeing your first video on the subject. But then I went to a 4 plex where 2 of the tenants were using cottenelle flushable wipes and was there till 8pm clearing that main line. Pulling wipes out of the main line, they backed up all the way into the overflows in the tub showers. Maybe if I let them sit there for a couple weeks they'd break down, but those people couldn't use their plumbing until the line was cleared. So I don't recommend flushable wipes anymore. These people may have been using too many wipes per flush, but I don't really know. Best not to mess around with that stuff, imo

GF & I did this test a while back. Took our standard wad of normal TP we’d use per wipe and 1 “flushable” wipe. After a couple days, the flushable wipe was breaking up and just like you showed, the tp on the other hand because it was wadded and clumped together just like it would be in normal usage was still pretty hard to pull apart.
So we learned as long as you use a wipe or two instead of a wad of standard tp it’s pretty safe.
Also asked a plumber friend. He said something similar, that if it does wad up or clog pipes then it was only a matter of time before tp caused the same issue

Do you think that your toilet paper stays in the water for 4weeks in your toilet? No it doesn’t it falls straight from your private line to a street side main drain or treatment plant and if there is too much fall for say and the solids do not keep up with the water being flushed with it leaving the solids to stick and dry onto the walls of your plumbing system there will be a very high chance of a partial or full blockage, and with a denser wipe it will definitely cause more issues than just your standard 3ply paper… but in all honesty it’s just more money for us plumbers, keep it up customers and buy it hahahaha

Anything you say, you are trusted to be an expert in. Flushable wipes clog tons of drains. I don't know how long you've been plumbing, but you'll see it soon if you're drain cleaning.
You don't wanna get in the habit of saying flushable wipes by this brand work, because if they don't or if the customer mis-remembers you're now on their bad side. You gain nothing by saying a brand and you stand to lose face with the people who pay you.

Exactly! Also depending where you live and the type of system you have can also determine if you can use wipes or not. Most of the packets actually state this for legal reasons.
Due to my work in aged care I know the difference because we use the plastic ones and we have to bag and bin them. At home I use the flushable ones and I tested it, just ran in under tap water for a minute and it was almost gone, like a tissue in water almost.
So by the time these wipes hit the main sewer system I'd assume most of them are in a stage where they are no more harmful then toilet paper. Just don't use them in bulk as the initial flush might block up, but one or two to clean things up is ok and one of the best feelings coming out fresh and clean from a toilet.

Assuming the sewer lateral is PVC or ABS, intact and structurally sound, then I wouldn't see much of an issue but in areas with homes built before the age of PVC/ABS sewers then this could easily catch on cast iron, transite joints, or even terracotta. Since it takes longer to break down than regular TP it could catch and collect waste and cause a clog. My first 6 years in this profession were with Roto-Rooter where I exclusively dealt with drain lines and sewer line excavation work. 2-4 drain calls, 5 days a week. I've done enough research lol

As for a manager at my local Roto Rooter, flushable wipes still aren't flushable. I've seen both cottonelle and charmin toilet paper plug sewer lines. Just because it makes it passed the toilet, it doesn't mean it will travel down your sewer pipe all the way out to the middle of the street... Or just keep flushing garbage because it makes the business and me lots of that sweet sweet money.

it's not they won't dissolve its when it's in your septic they will still build up more than you think because there is no agitation. I have pumped over a 1000 septic tanks. Sometimes even that thick tp builds up like crazy if used in excess.

Depends. "A couple of weeks" isn't a good metric because you and I both know with a single flush that wipe is going to be halfway down your mainline if not all the way to the city. so the fact that they deteriorate isn't really a home owners concern. that is more of a concern for the city. The real issue will be the condition of your mainline. Is it all jacked up with roots and offsets? First of all you should get this sort of thing fixed, but most people jsut get it cabled and never want to do repairs until they are forced to. In this case wipes of any sort are going to be a terrible idea. If your mainline is in perfect condition you aren't going to clog up no matter what you put down your mainline. whatever it is would have clogged the toilet long before it got stuck in a 4-6 inch wide properly pitched mainline. if your mainline is jacked though you should probably not be using wipes of any sort.

The problem with the cottonelle wipes in the video is that when they move through a system, they don’t have anything to pull them apart. Applying a force that does not occur in sewer pipes to prove your point is deceptive. You should perform a real test in an actual plumbing system with all three: conventional baby wipes, Cottonelle wipes, and toilet paper. I guarantee the Cottonelle wipes would not breakdown as they do when you pull them apart, nor would they be effectively a non-issue after flushing.
