Too much water causes our hair's cuticles to elongate and expand due to the water weight. The natural hair strands then dries going from a long, stretched strand to a more compact, tight curl in a type of protection mode from the water weight. Chlorine and saltwater can dry out natural hair even more due to their type of chemical makeup and excessive exposure to this without proper care can have a traumatic effect on the strands drying them out even more and thereby causing an even tighter curl pattern of protection. Which is why most black women know to protect their hair before getting into a pool and to immediately wash the hair, dry and moisturize afterward.
