    These announcers (Pat Summerall, Tony Trabert, and John Newcombe) were great together from 1982 through 1988 (I think.) This is when they really hit their groove.

      You're so right. I especially liked John Newcombe because he was very blunt about certain player's strengths and weaknesses. He waa doing a 2008 US Open quarterfinal match between Roddick and Djokovic. Newcombe kept talking about the book on Roddick was to take him deep into backhand corner and then sharply go the other way which Djokovic did. Secondly Newcombe pointed out that Roddick was not a very good volleyer especially on the forehand side.
      So what did Djokovic do? He would hit a short ball to bring Roddick in, then go right at Roddick's forehand volley which was weak. Newcombe was a superb analyst who wasn't afraid to tell the truth good or bad during his broadcasts.
      Very good point you made here.

    I think this was still when the USO SF matches were played on Saturday and the Final on Sunday. This SF match took a lot physically out of Mac; it was incredibly humid that day also. Lendl had a somewhat easier match at night and against an injured Connors. Lendl may have won regardless but it feels like Mac's 5-set match had something to do with his straight set loss.

    This match somehow wilander should have won, having breaks in 4th and 5th sets. Somehow he didn't use his deadly lobs, perhaps due to Pace of Macs volleys. His serve when he wanted can be too good, somehow he chose to be accurate in key moments of matches. For sure he would have beaten Lendl, Everytime he beats McEnroe in semis, he beats Lendl too, like in 1985 french and 1983 Australia open.

    Talk about winning the battle but losing the war. This five set win on Saturday would cost dearly on Sunday in the final against Ivan Lendl. Exhausted McEnroe would be easy pickings for Lendl in the the final losing in straight sets. Thus began the reign of Ivan the terrible. Thanks Matts Wilander. Thanks. Looking back Lendl should have given you a percentage of his earnings.😀

    • @denisdaly1708
      @denisdaly1708 6 лет назад +2

      Lendl would have won. Lendl had won just a few weeks earlier, and Lendl retained his clay Slam in the French. Mac had lost his Wimbledon title to Becker, who beat Lendl in the final. Lendl was on the up, number one. I know this was an exhausting match in very humid conditions. As I recall Mac got a drip after the match. It was permitted then. Lendl was unstoppable at the US open, making 9 finals jn a row, a record that will never be equaled.
      Somebody mentioned the madness of Super Saturday. Yes it was, and this long match did hurt Mac, even with the drip. It was importing to hold the semi the day before.

      I noticed it in '86. It was a very small, almost unnoticeable, decline. Then age and injuries caught up to him around 88. The 1990 US Open was his last great stand when he reached the SF only to be overpowered by a young Californian named Pete Sampras. (That US Open was Sampras' coming-of-age party when he won the tournament.)
