I have been watching your Jeep work for the last year. Previously, I had bought a 1960 CJ5 saving it from the wrecking yard. Your skills, information, techniques, etc have made me want to restore it. Everything needs rebuilding, sheetmetal restoration, etc. You have made an old man (78) want to do something to start the restoration process. The first thing will be this steering box pulled and rebuilt. I am going to try to rebuild items in the downward mode filling arriving at the sheetmetal problems. This gets my feet wet and gives me incentive to continue all the while the project is under a controlled situation as I proceed; I have "MAC degeneration" and want to continue the process as long as possible. Your videos and other information does provider insight and expert/practical experience/suggestions. One example is how, why, etc you do certain such as pitman arm, cotter pin inserting and tightening, etc. You do a great job and I am having fun in starting my project I thought I would or desired to become involved. Here we go on this journey. Thanks for all your videos. Keep going, Tiger! Setbacks do happen but we shall prevail. Steve Shoguneagle
Wow nice job I am in the middle of rebuilding my steering box on my 57 pick up I would like to purchase your unique lubricant I like the way it sticks to the worm gear good to see some proper Willy’s Work Thanks Dave
I have two 55 CJ5s. Getting close to doing steering overhaul on one and I'm damn thankful you provided this information and I saw it before I dive in. Please let me know how to procure your lubricants.
Yes I watched your video on steering gearbox lube and I would like to purchase some you should be able to get my email when I send this to you and I enjoy watching your videos I learned quite a bit. Thank you Thomas Bradley
In one of your videos you said you sell the correct lube for these old Willyss jeeps. I have a 52 M38A1 and my friend has a 51 cj3b. how do we order the lube from you? We need lube for trans, transfer case and diffs. Probably steering gear as well
How do I get some of your steering lube? Also do you have a video of how to run the horn wiring down the worm and connect it inside the steering gear box?
I have never tried the miller c-748 but I have seen them in the past and they are much larger than the 251 that was designed to remove the seals on willys jeep vehicles. Best to find the correct tool to do the job. Brian
I was hoping you would show the assembly of all the parts into the drag link not just placing them on the bench. Manual states turn to tight on the ball then then back off 1/2 turn front and 1 full turn steer box ends. Steering box lube per manual should be 80w140 gear oil, no special lube needed.
Hello Brian, do you have video on removal of the the oil pump cj3a. I haven't been able to find. I need to know what to look out for timing etc. Thank you.
No video on that just yet but will make one when assembling my next engine. If you need some help with it email me directly at metalshaper@comcast.net and I can walk you thru it. Brian
What is the best way to remove all the old steering lube? Do I have to pull the side cover off? Do I have to remove the fender? (sorry, I'm not a great mechanic, but I sure am loving all these videos)
yes, the best way to remove lube and give a cleaning is by removing the side cover. Pull out all the old grease or lube and give it a cleaning with some solvent. Get it as clean as you can before adding new fluid.
Thanks, Brian. Also, I've not been able to find exactly how tight to adjust the main bell crank bolt. Do I just tighten it tight and then tighten the "pincer bolt"? Or is there a specific torque to put on it?
I tighten them and use red loctite on the threads. Often times the nut is a locknut but I am not sure exactly what you have. Should be tightened for the size thread that it is and then install the cross bolt also with loctite on it.
i know this is not a forum..lol. but hey does anyone know why my wagon is a '59 flat windshield but can not find the glass as they only seem to sell split glass for my year and model..why is that??..(pic on profile)

Thanks Brian, I am trying to find a MillerW-251, been looking for 2 months
Need to retread the top of the steering column. Do you know the pitch or size?
should be 13/16-20 but you didn't specify which vehicle you are working on so check it carefully first.

Brian, will the Miller c-748. Work for pinion seal on Dana 44. Like the Miller w-251 seal puller
I have never tried the miller c-748 but I have seen them in the past and they are much larger than the 251 that was designed to remove the seals on willys jeep vehicles. Best to find the correct tool to do the job.

Wish I knew that about compressing the shock. I ended up grinding the rubber down.
Keep watching for more tips on how to properly rebuild these old Willys vehicles.
cant wait to begin my wagon....!!!!

good luck with the 80w-140, it will disintegrate your steering box bushings in a very short time, and may leak out the seal quickly as well.
Great stuff man! Keep it up
Thanks for the comment, keep watching as there are many more videos coming.
