91 Yamaha Phazer II Blows Up

- Just swapped the engine into this chassis from an 89. Pulled the oil injection system and was premixing it 30:1. Don't know why it decided to throw a piston through the block. Might have had a air leak in the intake boot or something and leaned it out.

I have a 1980 Yamaha enticer 340, was oil injected but run premix, mix it 50:1. You have to make sure you plug the two holes on the bottom of the intake.
I had them capped. Definitely could see that doing it though if someone forgot that. I imagine what happened is I had a rip in the boot from the carb to the engine causing it to lean out.

A carburetor jetted for oil injection will always run leaner with premix due to the oil's viscosity. Larger jetting may have helped.
Didn't think about that - that may have been what happened here.
At least 10% bigger??? (I like more oil and more fuel in my buzz-bomb motors. I do not want them to stick.)
Ouch. Too bad. Had my 93 lean out last February; replaced the piston and seems to run ok, but haven't been pushing it...
Mine just blew the head off of itself, snapped the head studs and lost a nut for the other one somewhere. Only thing i can think is when i was taking the top end off, the oil line into the bottom of the intake boot was broken and disconnected. Found another motor and should be able to finish the swap soon
Dang sounds like quite the experience! They'll do that if there's no oil haha.
My 91 phazer threw a rod last week and literally cut crankcase in half, found an 84 phazer with 7500 miles that needs top end rebuild for 50 bucks so I'll have her running again in no time.

Same here. Most of the backside of the case seems blown out.
@@lennartfjellman7033 did not need a rebuild , Stuck engine in my phazer and it runs great and purrs like a kitten. Best 50 bucks I've spent.

Most Phazer is usually last about 5000 miles before they break down
My 92 Phazer 2 is constantly running rich... I have Taken it to two experts who claimed to have solved the problem but it still persists. Usually fouls plugs on a very soon after starting. I feels like the chokes can stick on this style of sled but it's impossible to tell. Any suggestions?
Could adjust the air fuel mixture screw on the carb, or lower the needle to let less fuel in. Could possibly be a choke issue, I would recommend lubing the choke cables to assure they aren't getting stuck because that definitely causes a rich scenario.
Does the choke lever move at all? Sometimes the plungers will stick. Follow the choke cable to carb. Loosen up the screw (be careful they're plastic, use proper size wrench). Once the screw is out the plunger should pull right out. If it's stuck, you might have hard time getting the plastic screw out all the way. Spray some silicone or wd40, whatever your flavor, and let it sit over night.
Sometimes if the plunger isn't stuck in there to bad, you can flip your choke lever, and it'll usually free it up.
Clean your carbs, lube your cables. Put a dab of petroleum jelly on the choke plunger o ring when putting it back together.
If it's not the choke, then as stated you could adjust the fuel mixture screw.
I would only adjust it in 1/4 turn increments. You want your spark plugs to be chocolate brown color. Also a good idea while you have carbs apart to clean them, double check the size of the main jet, and pilot jet. Compare to oem recommendations. It could be possible someone changed the jetting. Especially if it's a new to you machine. Hope this helps
Now, another problem I've had, the gaskets weren't 100% sealed, off which caused everything to over heat.
That could have been it, kinda doubt it since I never opened this engine up.

Mine had a 10 cent big melted hole ...AEEN pipe was said not to be proper tuned for...

The oil cable Kinks when you push the throttle in anyway my snowmobile is an 88 Phazer so it is 33 years old
That's a bad problem to have! I removed the oil system from this one and pre mixed so that wasn't my issue.

Mixing 30:1 leans the engine out, all that oil needs to go thru your jets, taking the place of gas. Just an FYI
I've read about that in the past but honestly question how much of a difference that could make. Say I run 32:1 in lie of 40:1, that's really not much different at all and I can't imagine that leaning a sled out enough to make it pop. Realistically there was probably an air leak in the boot going onto the head that leaned it out and made it pop if I were a betting man.
@@MattMcHugh257 Honestly, I dont know, but I just know that when designed, ZERO oil was supposed to go thru those jets, as the engine was oil injected. Any modern decent 2 stroke oil can be mixed at 50:1. I run 50-60:1 klotz in my modified phazer.
and yes .. an air leak probably melted a piston.

How did you do the oil injection delete
Yank the tank and cap off the nipples on the engine that the oil lines normally connect to. Then just pre mix the gas.

only the best cub cadets Yes those ones. I just did it for the simplicity of the swap and taking out one factor of potentially running wrong. For a trail sled it’s terrible. I never rode this sled more than a few miles from home so mixing wasn’t an issue.
