I’m not actually sure if this product is fully open source on all fronts- but we deploy the cloud hosted option. I like that the software is easy for clients to understand. We have one client with a small wall of odd sized TVs where they make creative looking stuff. They had a power disturbance and lost 10 SD cards. flew out there, popped in the SD cards thinking it would take hours or complicated work to reconnect... nope. Just started back up. I looked like a master! Annoyingly, they start up with WiFi ad hoc networks. I really wish those networks went away once they joined up to the server. It’s a big security vulnerability and noise on the WiFi.
A few years ago I needed to update weekly stats slides displayed on a big monitor at work. I didn't want to go through the hassle of asking working for internet access for the Pi (piSignage would have been perfect, I wasn't aware of it at the time), so I configured the pi so it would boot up and run fbi (frame buffer image viewer) to rotate through any PNGs in a folder on the USB drive. Once a week I shut it down, changed the PNGs on the USB drive, and started it back up. Very low bitrate (sneaker-net) for data transfer, but it worked, was easy to setup, and made my boss's boss happy.
Thank you for all the information it's awesome the way you explain it, please keep me posted if you make more videos on how to use the piSignage Digital signage system and the dashboard interface
I created a local server with WORDPRESS and Foyer Digital Signage Plugin. Then your Web Browser works as a player. You can run in any OS without issues. Another more sophisticate solution I have found is to use Xibo CMS on server and their free player for Windows or Linux.
Perfect... I was looking for something exactly like this. Now... he's the million dollar question. Can the Raspberry Pi handle running the server as well?
You know, I'm pretty sure this is what the hospital I work at uses. They have a different setup though. They use a mini pc that is connected to a system that broadcasts the HDMI connection over coaxial cables that are run throughout the hospital.
I like the Video .. however .. another option is to use Open Office and use the power point option .. have been running our Pi with OO for 3+ years now and I did not spend the yearly $$$ .. Wow, so cool, Bit confused though, so your logging into pi signage server on one of the two devices they allow you to add for free. If you were to host on your own server, is the software still the same, or do you have to write your own software or is it a single web application you host..
That was neat. I have never seen this. I have yet to buy a raspberry pie but this looks interesting. I think I'll put one in my car someday just for the fun of it. Not that I need it there. LOL
They're not rated/designed for the high-heat environment of a vehicle which can easily exceed 175 Degrees F (~80 C). As such, your mileage may vary in terms of longevity.
Question? It is not exactly clear either with your video or on their web site. Does every player whether it is a RPi, chrome browser or chrome cast device based need a license at $25 each even if you are using your own server totally offline? Does every instance of self maintained server also require a license be purchased? If none of the devices or the server ever get connected to the internet, then how does a device get registered?
Hi there i want signage on a smart tv but we dont have any internet at the location how do i setup for a situation like this, thanks for you help.in advance
Very good tutorial. Do you feel this would be a solution for running as a signage outside of ones Home Theater? Mainly to display movie posters and or some how pull from the Plex server of whats playing now for example.
Would be happy to see more Raspberry pi related videos in channel, this open source world opens a lot of possibilities to us, and theese videos are interesting to see.
I am a little confused. Where are the assets stored? Are they, or can they be stored on the pi? I don’t mind buying a big sd card, but I don’t have the extra bandwidth to stream videos to the pi.
It's written open source... but the only real open source is the server if you want to host it by yourself... the player must have a license that cost 25 dollar... so not real open source

Is there anyway to stream to several screens a cable channel?. I have paytv, and I have several screens where I want to stream for example a football game, can I do this with this solution?
So trying this in 2023. It seems you have to pay $25 per player (pi) as well at something like $20 per pi per year for the hosted platform. You get 2 free Pi license, but even if you are hosting your own server you still need to pay $25 per Pi over the initial two licenses or you get a watermark/banner on the sign itself.
