- In an exclusive interview with CNN's Jake Tapper, Republican Ohio Rep. Anthony Gonzalez warns that former President Donald Trump is evaluating who stood in his way in overturning the 2020 election and is working to replace them with people who will do as he says.

I`m not Republican but I`m very pleased that this guy is not a Trumpist. He does seem to be nice, decent and honest.
It's to bad there's not more people like that, but he didn't vote to impeach Trump when he had the chance to get rid of the orange menace!
"I despise almost every policy of the Biden administration". He's just not as bad as most of the GOP, but he's still partisan and he plays to his voters. Why use the word 'despise'? Why not say "I disagree (strongly).....". Or "I believe these policies are wrong......". Here you have the root cause of the Tea Party, MAGA, Fox News/Newsmax/OAN, etc. They grew out of the existing 'decent' Republicans and thrived in a divided and misinformed and emotionally reasoning population.

There are a lot of Americans willing to torch our constitution and I'm not referring to just politicians. My family is Republican, not me though, and they don't believe the election was stolen. They voted for Trump but today are shocked at how badly he has behaved. I don't put all the blame on Trump. I blame the citizens who support this man, voted for him, and still spew his hatred. Americans made Trump who he is, not the other way around. His supporters are not his victims, they are his volunteers. They have made up their minds how things are and facts do not persuade them in the least. America! Grow Up!
People who agree or disagree with his political ideology- he's making extremely valid points. Please try to absorb what he's saying- and know that it can't be boiled down to a comment or a hot take. This is the future of our country and he's right that we are in dangerous territory, as we're letting ourselves be systematically played by liars and cheats.

This is what I don't get, what I will never get. He seems VERY reasonable, and I applaud him for his bravery, and for his loyalty to the country over party. If we had a stronger tertiary party or multiple party system, this would be easier, forcing alliances and compromise between each to create a coalition that forces policies that are palatable for all, but this either or the other, and no crossing the aisle to vote for a better candidate that isn't from your party is preventing otherwise reasonable people from doing what is needed to keep democracy alive. Once you by default say you will never vote Dem or Repub, then the only way to win is to discredit the other side, invalidate the system entirely to prop up your losing side, and that is what we are facing. This is a generational struggle. I don't see this tension getting lighter in my lifetime, sadly, and it only looks to be getting worse. We are no longer the shining example of Democracy for the world. Now we are an 'I told you so' for all who have been critical of Democracy. We need more than just people who wave the flag and call themselves patriots. We need people who oppose despots, who counter those who would tear down the foundation of our country by sometimes crossing the aisle. I split my ticket last election as I have in the past. Listening to this interview I heard a calm, rational republican - a rare breed these days - but... a declaration that if Trump is the nominee he would vote for a 3rd party throw away before voting for someone simply because they have a D next to their name is the epitome of party over country and that doesn't help anyone.
When trump was starting to flex his authoritarian muscles all these years, I wonder what this guy was doing. Did he say anything. Don't get me wrong, it's good he's speaking out but did he before? I'm curious. The signs where there, we could see where this trump saga was headed and people in his party kept quiet. He won't vote for democrat? Why should party matter, what about the policies of the person nominated? Does he know who it will be and what their idea's are? Coming to speak out against trump and at the same time fueling the same anger and division in the country right now.

There are a number of comments Gonzalez said that I don't agree with. He will never vote for a Democrat eh? Why not? I was a lifelong Republican and often voted for a Democrat if I liked what they had to offer. I've changed parties but would still vote for a Republican if I liked their policies. Gonzales despises all of Biden's policies? Why? The infrastructure has been in need for more years than we should admit. This country has been neglected terribly. We lost the house, presidency, etc.? I vote for the best candidate. I split my ballot the last election but what I've seen the republicans turn into and what happened on and since January 6th - I'd have a hard time doing that again. They purposely avoided this by bringing other things, like raising one's voice at school board meetings, while attacking the term, domestic terrorism. When they ignore death threats in media covered things, they are saying non-verbally that they will ignore them in real life. By the way, it has been coming to light that local police are ignoring death threats. Just recently some journalist were able to track down people, the police claimed couldn't be traced.
What a courageous man!!! There are still some people in the Republican Party with real values.

The media has to answer for its HUGE role in getting us to this place, and still continuing to push us further. Not just the likes of Fox, OAN etc, but nearly everyone
There are genuine, real, severe dysfunctions in our politics and discourse. This is particularly true for the last 2 years. But by 5-6+ years of keeping a singular laser focus on that dysfunction; it's social and political conflicts, displacing and drowning out everything else - our society's worldview, our perception of reality and its narrative, has been shaped accordingly.
And with politics, especially American politics being the attention-seeking popularity contest it is - that then means _attacks on_ dysfunction or their own _acts of_ dysfunction becomes the show politicians need to put on, to get their moments in the spotlight. Which becomes an *incredibly* destructive feedback loop, as thousands of them keep on "having" to continously one-up the last guy or gal, to stand out and get that attention.
They are like a bunch of gambling addicts at a casino table, all stuck in a loop of doubling down and doubling down again on losing numbers, digging themselves further and further into a deep, dark hole with crumbling walls. But here, America is their families back home who suffers the dire consequences. Here, there is no "house" that wins, in the place of a dealer is but a mirror.
When media choose to pursue political and social ambulance chasing as their _only_ gig, sure; that sells clicks and eyeballs for their ads, but it gravely warps the public's perception of reality, manipulates the people into believing that there is _only_ dysfunction, perpetually worsening dysfunction. But that isn't true. In reality there is still a lot of good, reasonable compromise, reasonably good-faith, for-the-people productive work getting done. But unless you're watching multiple channels simultaneously/24/7 on/CSPAN, or going out of your way to seek reports and summaries on legislators' and govt websites - you wouldn't have any idea that there's much more than stagnated dysfunction in the works.
Given the choice, media will almost _always_ choose to mislead or misrepresent something to _create_ a perception of dysfunction if the news or "news" of the hour isn't controversial or dysfunctional enough, over covering any of that good, productive work.
When this level of inflated dysfunction becomes the _only_ narrative across many years of reporting, from the sources people trust to give them "the news" - it doesn't take a rocket surgeon to put 2+2 together and realize how that is gonna influence the rhetoric and demeanor of the rest of society and and its discourse.
So the people certainly has their individual and community responsibility to control their own behavior, demeanor, decency, civility and respect towards others. But it is absolutely critical to recognize (and address) what a megabiglysaurus role the media has chosen to play - through their selective and manipulating portrayal of reality - in stringing along, pushing and shoving the population of this country into the dark, awful place we are now.
This is further evident by the shockwave and reactions of people when some "good news" _does_ slip through the cracks. Then you can almost hear a collective sigh of relief across the whole country, a short but powerful moment of reduced tension, fear and doubts, of faith and hope for something better, hitting folks like a small semi-euphotic drop of oxy - before going back to the same dysfunctional bs. This phenomenon demonstrates very well, that the population doesn't _want_ things to be this way, that it's an awful and incredibly stressful and anxiety-laden state to be and stay in. But the media choses to perpetuate it, for clicks and eyeballs making money, in spite of them knowing damn well how badly this harm the country and its population.
Or as Edmund Burke put it, "The only thing needed for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing". Cowards all too comfortable....
But he did do something, he voted to impeach Trump. That is why he must now go. Morality and support of the constitution is no longer tolerated, in the party of Trump.
