I am not a professional singer, but I have been singing all my life. His patting his chest/throat is not related to his sound in any way-in my opinion. It is just a way of showing special emotion for the words of the song. He is so blessed! And he blesses us immensely with his singing.
i hve noticed that as soon as avid joined the gvb, every singer who could hit a high note was tying to out high note and loud david. they'll never do it. Anthony has passed away
They call David "The Voice" for good reason. At the height of his Career (and maybe still now) he had a four and a half octave full voice range before even thinking about going falsetto. Amazing! I love the GVB in all of it's configurations. You can't beat 4-part harmony.
Best tenor on the planet. And could not agree more with modern worship. Some is the lost musicality, but also (to me) is the lost humility. To each their own. God bless, guys.
Love, love, love everything that David sings!! This is absolutely one of my very favorites!! Their harmony is impeccable, which Bill Gather is very well-known for!!! I could listen to David sing the phone book and be totally mesmerized by his vocals and ability!!! I love Russ, and Guy, as well!! David just brings every song to life!! His passion for what he does and for who he does it for is evident in everything that I've ever seen or heard him do!! Myself and two friends have concert tickets near us and that's my birthday weekend!! My birthday gift, it doesn't get any better this side of Heaven, I don't believe!! Please continue to react to David's music and videos! I don't know if you have reacted to "No More Night," if so I haven't seen it yet, but I do love your reaction videos!!!
You should also watch his live performance of “These Are They” at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. It was the same last me up, Guy, Russ, David and Bill but David does the verses solo with the vocal band coming in on the chorus. Also his Nessun Dorma solo in San Antonio, TX was awesome. He’s pretty breathtaking to watch live. We saw him last September at his annual Labor Day Barn Bash at his home in Tennessee. It’s a two-day concert and each concert is 3+ hours long. Incredible experience.
Great reaction guys, absolutely love David Phelps and the Gaither Vocal Band. Agree with you Don't care for modern Christian music, just isn't my cup of tea. The older gospel music and hymns have a message where the newer stuff is just repeat repeat same words over and over. Sorry, to those who like the new music but I am 87 years old been involved with church music most of my life. Thank you so much guys for the great reaction and choice of music.😊
Believe me, it has nothing to do with age, I'm 32 years old, and I couldn't agree more. I love Gaither Vocal Band, but for me, they don't exist anymore, it's another group with the same name.
I love David Phelps’s version of He’s Alive I agree about modern Christian music. I love the Happy Goodmans . I think my favorite from The Happy Goodmans is The Lighthouse
I’ve followed David since he was getting his classical performance degree from Baylor U. He has nearly a 4-octave range and perfect pitch…and a wonderful pianist! Check his”O Holy Night”! BTW, I am a vocal coach (degree in voice) and he tapped his chest to emphasize “thirst”! I have 4 degrees in music and he is the greatest versatile voice alive!!
Great reaction!! You want more mind-blowing, 'The Dream' from David's 'Classic'('12) live performance/album is a must watch! Also, 'Water' from 'Freedom' with his 2nd oldest daughter. David's 'Classic', Freedom' ('15), and 'Stories & Songs Vol. II' ('20) are my favorites!! I agree with the other suggestions in the comments too. Yes, David does pat his heart/chest a lot. Also, Russ Taff was with the GVB from 2001-2004. Thanks guys!!
I agree with other posts that the throat tapping has nothing to do with vibrato assistance or other vocal reason. I think he is bringing attention to the throat that is dry until the thirst is quenched.
My dad was a pastor and I grew up with the gaithers..., it was a thing to sit and watch and point out all the greats that passed. Mark lowery even made a joke about it
Guy and David (and Anthony) are why my standards are unachievably high today for professional musicians. The blend of the Vocal Band from '97 to about 2012 was unmatchable. Nearly everyone (especially in the CCM category) pales in comparison.
Great reaction to a great song! I’m not sure if you knew this, but as a very young child, Anthony Burger was seriously burned. Doctors told his parents that he’d never be able to use his hands. Guess God had another plan!
Phelps is a wonderful Soloist, wonderful! And his music partners were amazingly chosen…Yes!He beats his chest lowing a little bit his head has the belting - physiological and psychological instrument for correct high note release as at the same time he demonstrates the emotions within the lyrics. Not only has technique but has natural feeling release.Demonstration.You can feel and check through the sound and visual the truth within or when not also.He feels and demonstrates the true love about music!
What a great performance. Love seeing you guys diving into gathers and especially my man David Phelps. The Legend! I love reacting to his content. Good reactions guys.
My first two cassette tapes were BJThomas "You Gave Me Love (When Nobody Gave Me a Prayer) and the Gaither Trio cassette "Life "which was for kids I grew up listening to the Gaithers and have sat in tears during many Gaither Homecoming Videos from being moved by the songs and in tears missing so many of the great singers that passed away and were not in the newest video. Thank you for sharing!!!
I so agree with not being a fan of modern gospel praise music. Give me old hymns and southern gospel any day. They have such wonderful lyrics and the gospel message.
He taps his throat on the word “thirst” to signify thirst, dry throat, being quenched by the living water found in Christ. David Phelps is the greatest tenor ever. Listen to his own composition “Just As I Am” (not the traditional altar call hymn).
Saw David in concert in Texas tonight. He can sing anything, but is partial to Christian. He sang an opera song tonight. David was patting his throat to emphasize the woman's thurst.
Have you heard Let Freedom Ring. Live from Carnegie Hall in memory of 9/11. It is fantastic. I'm with you on modern christian music. Sounds too much like rock music
Y’all should react to, Let freedom ring. From Carnegie Hall. 2002. Months after 9/11. Guy/Pal, Russ, David and Bill. Plus, Michael English sing Please forgive me. Ft. Jason Crabb.
When he sang the line.... Now there was a thirsty woman... used his hand gestures, when touched his chest.. which means (* the woman was thirsty.... that's his stage presentation**) nothing whats so ever to hit the note from his neck to what you've mentioned. Nice reactions anyways!
If you want to be on your feet by the end of the song, check out this GVB song from their Red Rocks concert some years ago. David sings lead the entire song and it’s truly a WOW moment. The song is called “These Are They.” ruclips.net/video/7SENQdWA1NQ/видео.htmlsi=BLe0P3-nTY97uAtk
I couldn’t agree with you boys more about getting rid of contemporary Christian music and just having this kinda music instead. For me this is mostly what I listen to all day at work.
I kind of prefer the one where mark lowry sing it with guy Pernod, David Phelps, and bill gaither. It just blends together better. Also I may be 40 but I don’t like praise hymns. They have little meaning and are all based on feeling but my hyperactive Brian gets bored of them after the first three times they are repeated
I also can't stand modern Christian music, worship music...no please! I've been singing all my life in quartets, trios, and choirs, and I'm just tired of the mediocrity taking over all the church music, everywhere you go you hear the same thing, the same repetitive songs, it's just sad. When I get to a place and see 8 or 9 people on the platform having a worship service, and they're all singing in unison an endless chorus that just repeats and repeats...why do you need 8 or 9 if you are going to sing in unison????
I am not a professional singer, but I have been singing all my life. His patting his chest/throat is not related to his sound in any way-in my opinion. It is just a way of showing special emotion for the words of the song. He is so blessed! And he blesses us immensely with his singing.
I’m a singer also and totally agree with you!
Yeah that's what I thought about hitting the chest. It was more to express the "thirst" portion of the lyrics
Exactly !
He’s touching the Holy Ghost within him. ❤
That movement is just to convey emotion
It works.
This is what you call true worship, glory to God Almighty, hallelujah
i hve noticed that as soon as avid joined the gvb, every singer who could hit a high note was tying to out high note and loud david. they'll never do it. Anthony has passed away

Brothers, these harmonies are better than anything else being created in modern music.
Amen!!
Best tenor on the planet. And could not agree more with modern worship. Some is the lost musicality, but also (to me) is the lost humility. To each their own. God bless, guys.
David Phelps is Goat nuff said
It's simple guys. More David Phelps please.
I just love the harmony. So rich.
A lot of legends on that stage! Anthony Berger for one. Russ Taff multi Grammy winner, Guy, Bill and of course David. A once in a generation talent!
He has such an amazing voice. They all do.
You'd love "Water", a duet this daughter, about the woman at the well.
Love, love, love everything that David sings!! This is absolutely one of my very favorites!! Their harmony is impeccable, which Bill Gather is very well-known for!!! I agree about modern Christian music. I love the Happy Goodmans . I think my favorite from The Happy Goodmans is The Lighthouse
David Phelps - O Holy Night (Lyric Video/Live At Alabama Theatre, Birmingham, Alabama/2000). And David Phelps, Gaither Vocal Band - He’s Alive [Live].
Definitely a big difference between southern gospel and worship music.
I’ve followed David since he was getting his classical performance degree from Baylor U. He has nearly a 4-octave range and perfect pitch…and a wonderful pianist! Check his”O Holy Night”! Listen to Let Freedom Ring with these same 4.
Hey y'all! Man back in the day. I had the opportunity to get too play drums with Antony Burger. It was so awesome. Man he was amazing on the piano.
you got to check out him singing the star-spangled banner
Guy and David (and Anthony) are why my standards are unachievably high today for professional musicians. The blend of the Vocal Band from '97 to about 2012 was unmatchable. Nearly everyone (especially in the CCM category) pales in comparison.
Try “Child, You’re Forgiven”. David is mind blowing in it.
Great reaction to a great song! I’m not sure if you knew this, but as a very young child, Anthony Burger was seriously burned. Doctors told his parents that he’d never be able to use his hands. Guess God had another plan!

Thirst - touching his throat - just to emphasize the words and message of the song.
I'm not crying you are lol.
I so agree with not being a fan of modern gospel praise music. Give me old hymns and southern gospel any day. They have such wonderful lyrics and the gospel message.

You guys need to listen to "Heaven Came Down" by the Vocal Band. David is featured.
patting chest is rheatrics. giving love to God.
Saw David in concert in Texas tonight. He can sing anything, but is partial to Christian. He sang an opera song tonight. David was patting his throat to emphasize the woman's thurst.
Liked and subscribed. I absolutely love David as well❤
Have you listened to them sing the American national anthem? It’s absolutely amazing!! It’s the accapella version!
At the end Bill just drops out and thinks to himself, dang I’m good at finding talent.
Nah he's just not low enough to hit a C#2 😂
If this impresses you listen to David Phelps do O Holy Night or Nessun Dorma. He is classically trained and has an incredible range.
Please react to Gaither Vocal Band "Let Freedom Ring" and David Phelps "We Shall Behold Him."
Guy Penrod aka Pal. 😂
Have you heard Let Freedom Ring. Live from Carnegie Hall in memory of 9/11. It is fantastic. I'm with you on modern christian music. Sounds too much like rock music

React to Russ Taff, fab singer. I have always adored gospel music. Grew up with Gaither albums and others. Love Cynthia Clawson too.

Nice reaction. I do not care for modern worship music either. When these guys sings, it's awesomely amazing
Check out He's Alive.
Don’t be silly, :) he’s just expressing with his hands!
There is a gospel quartet you desperately need to react to and that is the Cathedral Quartet. The song is called Suppertime.
I believe Guy Penrod was married to Gaither's daughter.
No, Angie isn't Bill's daughter. She met Guy in college.
I couldn’t agree with you boys more about getting rid of contemporary Christian music and just having this kinda music instead. For me this is mostly what I listen to all day at work.
Agree about modern Christian music. Something is not right with most of it.
David has done much higher keys than this
"They should get rid of Christian music and do this." Amen to that!
YES! 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
I kind of prefer the one where mark lowry sing it with guy Pernod, David Phelps, and bill gaither. It just blends together better. Also I may be 40 but I don’t like praise hymns. I have never heard Mark sing it with David and Guy.
I can’t stand modern music either!$
Are Either one of you guys also born again Christians?
Please, less chatter and more music.
I also can't stand modern Christian music, worship music...no please! Was going to watch and enjoy, but you two kept talking over the music. Bye.
There is a reason you have subscribers
Hes letting us know his love for christ through his singing. Patting his heart saying yes the holy spirit is here.
