Fwiw, as an actual DV survivor, I have followed this case closely. I believe that the jury got it right. And I want to say this for anyone in that situation - when DV is truly happening. Thanks in advance for your forbearance in reading this...
I owe my life to a cop. I was in the ER getting stitches on top of my head from where my husband had hit me with a ceramic lamp. (I also had bruises of all colors from head to toe. It's as if I saw them for the first time thru the doctor's, nurses' and that cop's eyes.)
That officer told me what he'd seen in 15+ years of law enforcement and said that if I didn't leave, then my family would end up identifying my body.
As crazy as it seems, somehow, through the pain, alcoholism and three years of denial about the level of violence I faced almost daily, I STILL thought I could change things and stayed. Two months later, my husband shot at me with a .22 rifle: I heard the bullet whiz past my left ear. I left and phoned the number that LEO had given me.
But my husband's next wife was not as fortunate. She was found beaten into a vegetative state. She regained consciousness two years later and then died the next year without being able to recognize her own sons. And he was never convicted for her death. His young sons' lives were shattered.
Hoping that the jury sends a message to those who think they can manufacture DV as an excuse to *ill people.
Fgs, if this is happening to you - leave! And this goes for women and men. There are ways to protect yourself against violence.
Lastly, I did find and thank that cop after I got sober and was working in a career I had only dreamed of. No one has to go thru it alone. Take care, friends.

Just like bail they will lose their money if you go on the run. They also kinda own you,, and most people do not realize they have the same rights if they pay your bail. I have a feeing they thought she defended herself, but that because she used a gun, she committed a crime. I predict that if jurors do interviews they will say just that. They will say they believed she was defending herself, but because she had a gun she somehow committed a crime. This case screams overturn on appeal, based on confusing jury instructions. The one guy in this video thought the same as me, that the jury must have wrongly thought that her using a gun to defend herself, must have somehow been a crime. The way the instructions were written it did make it seem like using a gun for defense is a crime even if you lawfully defended yourself.

He kicked his ex-wife so hard that she lost consciousness, because he couldn’t get it up, he knocked out the dog by punching him, threw the cat, stalked Ashley, hit Ashley, terrorized her by shooting his gun off … he abused women and animals. That’s the kind of father she had. Eve went on tik tok disparaging Ashley believing her father…. Her half sister will see this someday… she will grow up to hate Eve and Doug.

I agree with you partially. I know attorneys and they couch their clients to do certain things. I actually believe majority of what she said. It is clearly a severely dysfunctional relationship on both ends. Neither of their hands are clean. But many of us unfortunately know what it’s like to have a man double your size screaming at you and coming towards you. Had her attorney not coached her to “show emotion” and she just told the story organically, I believe it would be a different outcome. This happened 4+ years ago so she has had all of that time to process. She’s gone through it verbally hundreds of times to prep for trial. Had she not had all of the time and preparation, it would have been more real. Just my opinion. I feel for both families and especially the children. Unfortunately, nobody wins in these situations.

Remember, she has had 4+ years to process this. Emotion is very different at that point especially after your attorney coaches you and makes you rehearse a million times. I wish they did not do that because it makes it impossible to get a clear read on someone. I personally do believe this was a dysfunctional relationship and at times she was fearful. Maybe not for her life but everyone has a breaking point. Including Doug. Her hands are not clean either. I believe she was being manipulative and using the system in the custody battle and that caused both of them to break. I just feel for both of the families and especially the kids. Nobody is a winner here. Be careful who you procreate with. They might not be a bad person but they might not be right for you and can become very toxic really quick. I think it’s the right verdict personally, given the standard of proof. It appears that they believed her, but even on her account, the force was unreasonable and excessive.
Don’t think this is necessarily a compromise verdict or internally inconsistent as some of the experts are saying though I admit I’m not familiar with the stand your ground laws. Imo defence counsel was also alive to the fact that this verdict was likely, hence the reference to it in closing

Did they say how tall Ashley is?
She looks very tall to me and I believe they said that Doug was 5 foot nine, 159 pounds.
I don’t know any man who wears a size 30 waist jeans and a T-shirt size small … this was not a big guy.
When their therapist testified, I believe it was Dr Quintan, she had said Doug was godlike, overbearing, and a few other words, he put his elbows out like he’s puffed out describing that dog with this big bulky bully.
Doug was a very small man .. and I think Ashley was probably as tall as he was she was not a shrinking violet.
Dr also said that Ashley said she was scared of him .. he then went on to say during their session “ Ashley was saying disparaging things about Doug”…..
If somebody is a victim of DV and afraid of their abuser I don’t think that they would put him down in front by the people. Typically by doing so you’re going to get beat for it afterwards…
I don’t think she was afraid of him .
According to her story, he chose to hit her for the very first time minutes before they are going on this journey with her mother down the street at the park….
    Cars and truck are packed
House is empty with the exception of a mattress, laundry basket, and the morning toiletries.
Ashley had a gun loaded and ready to go in the laundry basket in her bedroom easily accessible to that three year year-old was running around the house!
You would think the guns would be in a lock box and packed . This does not make sense unless she planned on using it and just put one in the laundry basket and one on the shelf in the closet when mom took her their daughter down to the park.
    Empty house
    Him
    Her
    2 loaded guns
If her story is true, she ran back into her bedroom yet didn’t lock the door behind her?
I think we all use a door knob with a lock for our bedrooms, especially when you have children .
I believe since Doug was packing the boxes into the truck the garage door is open and the garage door into the house is open so he can go in and out and in and out.
It makes sense she would’ve run out through the garage if her story was true .

Jury got it right. Did Doug stalk, not let up, maybe just not leave this woman alone? Yes, but, he didn't deserve to die. I think she just wanted to get rid of him because he just wouldn't give up. i think she married him because he invested in her ballet school idea and she thought he probably was a lot wealthier than he actually is. Doug was stupid, following this women around and being her doormat. He was obsessed because he was near 60yo and she was an attractive dancer in her 20s. He should have just let it go and he would still be alive. If she was really scared of him, you would not invite this person over to help you move. That seems like she was taking advantage of him and maybe even stringing him along. You can't find her not guilty based on the evidence but they gave her a little break by only convicting of manslaughter.

I agree. The tragic fact is that Doug has to carry some of the blame too. Now two daughters have to deal with the consequences of a gullible older man who did not think with his brain.

She was looking for a score and then wanted to be done but he kept hanging around so she continued to give him glimmer of hope. Doug was like Jim Carrey in dumb and dumber when he was told by the girl there's a one in a billion chance they'll be together. "So you're telling me their is a chance, Doug said."

@@ysw3057 He should have seen that the relationship was BS. Im in my late 40s and if I married a girl in her 20s and she was treating me like that, I'd realize I made a huge mistake and just cut my losses. She kept moving hundreds of miles away and he kept following. Tried to buy the neighbors house at one point. Really needed to get a grip , divorce, and move on with life instead of being this girls doormat and looking like a clown in the process. He's dam near 60yo. No excuse for that.

She defended herself against a man who kicked his first wife so hard he left her unconscious because he couldn’t get it up, he punched his dog and knocked him out, he stalked Ashley, gps her car, shot off guns to terrorize her, hit her in the head, etc. WHAT A EVIL MAN. I worked in women’s Battered shelters for years…. Doug certainly was a perpetrator, and I don’t think you would want your sister or mom to date him. Ashley had every right to manipulate him in order to keep him safe. Eve is very immature, and I’m sure Emerson will grow up hating her as Doug.

Justice for Eva, Justice for Doug, and Justice for the baby girl Doug struggled to connect with while alive. Justice was served. Had the State presented with stronger cross-questions, it would have been GUILTY (2nd Degree). Manslaughter is better than NOT GUILTY so I am happy.

    Lets clear afew things up:
His past relationships doesnt prove anything.
He never kicked the dog, that was proved.
Posioned him? That was kicked to the curb by the judge as lies.
Scared of him? Why text friendly things and meet up? Not scared.
This was NEVER a case of DV in the first place, she manipulated that situation.
Tears don't prove guilt or innocence.
She admitted no violence, emotional abuse was her only.
    Justice served!
May this be a lesson to those who try to trick others with their lies...
