    I've always wanted to learn cello since I got exposure to them in college. I feel like this was the perfect video for me to find for that too.
    And with it being half-sized (as a shorter guy) maybe if I could ever find one/buy one I could finally learn!

    Your 2/4 Engelhardt has really nice tone! If you ever find a 1/4 Cello, you should grab it and pretend that it's a Viola on steroids! Excellent video, great feeling in your playing, as usual, and thanks for sharing!!

      Thanks Leon!! If I ever got my hands on a good 1/4 I'd probably try and convert it to a violoncello da spalla 😆😆 Those things are wicked cool. Thanks for watching!

    This video just made me smile :-) It reminds me of something I've always told my students: if you're a good musician and a passionate player (and have enough technique) you can make any instrument sound good, even a piece of crap! The deep notes are beautifully rich, you couldn't tell it was only 1/2 the size. Such a wonderful sound! I thought you were playing Thomas Newman's theme from The Shawshank Redemption at the beginning there.

    One of these days you might come across an octobass. Those basses are so tall that they are equipped with finger keys to change the pitch of the strings. It would probably take two people to haul them on to the stage.

    You should try tuning it up a 5th to GDAE (an octave lower than the violin), though you'd probably need a special set of strings to do so.

  • @RockStarOscarStern634
    @RockStarOscarStern634 Год назад

    Geared Tuners would help keep your Bowed stringed instruments in Tune longer. D'addario Helicore strings should help w/ Bowing (Medium Tension for a good balance) as they're a tiny bit thinner.

    1/2 size seems like a perfect size instrument to record in your space. Anything larger might sound bit boomy, don't you think so?

    • @InstrumentManiac
      @InstrumentManiac  3 года назад +1

      Nope! 1/2 is convenient but it doesn't capture the rich low end of my normal cello. Still great for touring though :)

    Thank you for the demonstration 😃
    As for the instrument... well I didn't like it all that much. It sounded flimsy, timbre-wise.
    What I like about cello is that rich, full, dark sound that vibrates in your core and resonates within your soul. It's like the deep, musical voice of a big, charming, handsome man.
    I don't know whether it is the size or this specific instrument.
    As for what instrument I might choose, I'm a big man, with large hands... If I ever buy a cello - I think it'll depend on whether I find a good teacher -, it will be a full-sized one, proportionate to my body size. Or a silent cello. I'm tempted by the possibility of being able to play as much as I want, even at night.

    • @InstrumentManiac
      @InstrumentManiac  4 года назад +1

      Fair enough! I agree a full sized cello is still way more resonant, but for travelling this is a nice option (rather than having my poor main one keep getting so beat up). Good luck taking it up, it's a wonderful instrument to learn!

    Could I get a 1/2 cello closer to my chest to allow my bad shoulder to reach the first strong easily?

  • @happylittlemonk
    @happylittlemonk 3 года назад +1

    I have never seen a cello. I saw one on Facebook market which look clean and new going for a reasonable price. So I am thinking of getting it just to have one and mess around with it. One thing I like to ask is if learning on any of these violin family will require learning the fingering again as the spacing of notes will be different. Or is it like putting a cap (like guitar fret cap) on a full size cello? I mean will the spacing of notes be the same as higher register of the cello? That I guess would be if the strings are the same on both instruments. As I said I have no idea about these.

    • @InstrumentManiac
      @InstrumentManiac  3 года назад

      Go for it if you find a cheap one! Spacing gets smaller as you go up the neck. I would advise signing up for lessons since it's not really possible to learn properly on your own

      @@InstrumentManiac It is the first time I fail to find information on Google. How do I tune this instrument?
      I do not even know the note I need to tune each instruments in. Could you please just tell me what each string is tune to? I try to listen to you playing the open strings and try it that way in case you do not reply.

    • @InstrumentManiac
      @InstrumentManiac  4 года назад +1

      Good observation! It might actually be more the mic placement. I tried to balance getting a lot from the instrument vs. getting the room. Especially with cello mic placement has a huge impact on recorded sound
