When my Daddy was young in the hills of Kentucky, he said people talked about wampus cats. My daddy said this was in the 1920's. He said they were scared, especially at nights. Your friend's story is very scary. Thank you Donnie fir bringing this to us. There are alot of strange things that are unexplained, and need to be passed down.

I've heard of the wampus here in NC...I was told they sound like a woman screaming..an awful sounding scream and they would come on people's porch and crawl their screen doors all up trying to get in...Scary stories about the wampus cat.

What a great story! Glad you are preserving these stories! There was an incident on a dairy farm near us one summer, around 1 a.m. I was reading and I heard the cows restless in the field and then I kind of a roar that literally would freeze your blood. It was nothing that belonged here; it was like something you'd hear on the plains of Africa. Made me think of a lion. You just knew, this is something that shouldn't be here. We found a calf torn apart the next morning. The roar was so loud you could hear it echoing in the valley. Not one dog barked. We never saw it, and I'm glad of that.

Yup, when the dogs don't bark, you know it's something funky creeping around. Mamaw always said, if the dogs don't bark, best not to nose, just say your prayers and go to sleep. Sound advice when living in the mountains. Thank you for sharing 😊!

I live here in Washington State, and I came face to face with a cougar once, back in the early nineties. I lived on a dead end road off from a side road of a back road out in the small hills around here. I was walking down a remnant of an old logging road, alone, when the cat came into sight about 60 feet in front of me. This was in broad daylight so I could see it as plain as day. It hadn’t seen me yet, was walking across the path in front of me. I froze solid, hoping it wouldn’t see me. Then it turned and started walking right towards me, and that’s when it saw me. It hunched down on all fours and just studied me. I was frozen, not moving an eyelash, hoping it would go away. We stood there for several minutes just staring. I thought maybe if I just didn’t move it might think I was just a tree stump. But I didn’t know what I’d if it stood up and came toward me. I was downwind from it and figured it couldn’t smell me. Finally it stood up, turned, and walked off into the woods and underbrush without making a sound, not even a twig snap or a leaf. I couldn’t see it then, so I didn’t know if it kept on going or was circling around me or just sitting out there. The only thing I could think to do was look as big as I could, which isn’t that big for a 4 foot 11 woman. I picked up the biggest stick I could find near me and started waving it around and making as much noise as I could I was singing and hollering and I don’t even know what I said. I never saw it again, but I used to hear it sometimes at night just outside my home. It sounded like a woman screaming in terror. The first time I heard it I called up my neighbor and said did you hear that woman screaming and she started laughing. She said that was no human being, but a cougar. Fascinated me after that. So that’s my cougar story. I enjoy your stories Donnie. Sometimes they make me almost feel like I wish I’d grown up over there in the Appalachian mountains.

Some of the best gifts are stories passed down from the elders in our families. Things they have seen and heard from the hills and hollows. They did not make them up, they lived them. Donnie, I really enjoy listening to your videos…I’m from near the Appalachian region myself. Born and raised in upstate South Carolina. I wanted to share this story with you. Spooky yet humorous. My dad is from Alabama. Way back in the early 1960s, my grandaddy and his brother and my dad and a cousin were coming home from somewhere and were riding down a dirt road. It was late in the evening and the car got stuck in the mud. They got out and commenced to try to get it out of the mud. All of a sudden my grandaddy looked up on a hill next to them. He said about that time he saw the biggest “cat” he had ever seen. Said it had big ol long ears and he had never seen anything like it. My grandaddy ran up the hill and took off after it, said it was so big it was crunching corn stalks in the field it was running through. My dad was very young when this happened so didn’t remember a whole lot about it but said when my granddaddy would tell this story to others, it would scare him half to death. My dad was an adult when it finally dawned on him that what my granddaddy had seen was a deer 😆. He had never seen one prior to that. I think they had just re-released deer in to that part of the country at that time or something. God bless!

I researched the black panther sightings claim & learned it's an anomalous genetic defect where it's estimated to be 2-11% @ most worldwide of actually black leopards or jaguars. They HAVE been known to be in the USA. Just very seldom. I think I ran across one article that the PNW had a black panther sighting over 100yrs ago.

Howdy Donnie- yessir, there’s things out there in the woods that you don’t know what is. We’ve had mountain lions in our yard. One night I went out and there was a black one sitting down on its haunches watching me. It went around through the woods and was still watching me. That time l removed a limb off the tree it was under just about two feet over it’s head. He disappeared and I went back to house. Thank you for sharing your friend with us. God bless

My husband's Grandfather worked for the Morehead and North Fork Railroad. At the time, they were digging the Clack Mountain train tunnel about 4-5 miles from his house which was on the banks of the Licking River. He walked to work starting about 4:30-5 AM and walked home well after dark. He said one night a big cat (he didn't know if it was a mountain lion or panther) started stalking him. He had an oil lamp (I guess railroad lantern) with him as the only light he ever used to walk to and from the job site in the dark. He said as long as he kept the lantern at shoulder level between him and the cat, it would back off and go around to the other side. He kept that lantern held at shoulder level passing it from his left hand to his right depending on which side the cat was on for (he estimated) 3 miles or so. He was so scared and tired when he got home he barely stand up or speak to tell the story. Of course jobs were hard to come by so he walked to work the next morning. He never saw it that close again.

What a wonderful thing to see an old friend again, Donnie! I'm glad y'all got the chance to talk and swap stories again. I think Big Foot and his kin learned why that area was called No Business, because they certainly had no business being there! Glad they got out with their skins still on! Names had purpose in the old days! The mountains you live in are beautiful, but ancient. Who knows what secrets they hold? 👀
You're looking mighty well these days, I'm very happy to see that! Y'all take care now! May God bless you and yours. 😊

My family has land in Pocahontas County West Virginia just South of Marlinton. It's been in the family since before 1850. I know that it's been said throughout the years that there's mountain lions up there despite the general consensus that they've all been eradicated. I wouldn't be surprised if there happens to be some still in the area since Pocahontas is the least populated county in all of West Virginia! I believe you've mentioned before in a video awhile back & that I would completely agree, that there's probably numerous areas in those mountains that's never had a human traverse. So many hollers, caves & outcroppings for animals to nest down in for anyone to know for certain what's extinct & what's not. Another great video! Hope you're continuing to heal quickly! Stay safe!

Love the stories. The mountains are indeed mysterious. When I deer hunt I like to get to my spot about an hour before first light. It’s a little spooky sitting in the dark and I hunt on the ground. After watching this video, I’ll never go into the woods again while it’s dark.🤣🤣 I’d never tell someone they didn’t see or hear what they said they saw or heard. Thanks for the stories Donnie!

@@donnielaws7020 oh I won’t. And I will go into the woods and sit in the dark. It’s kind of neat to do it. I’ve been deer hunting since 1978, so nothing much bothers me. There are 3 things that have scared me in my hunting career. I got lost in the 48,000 acre Natchez Trace State Park. Once I thought I had found human remains but they weren’t. Not cow or deer bones and to this day I still don’t know what kind of animal they were from, but they weren’t human. Lastly, while bow hunting alone in Shelby Forest near Memphis and the river, deep in the woods I came to a clearing, saw a john boat propped against a tree and realized I had walked into about an acre marijuana garden. I got out of there fast!
