  • After John Major took over as PM he began to fall out with Mrs Thatcher on the European Issue. After the Major Govt was forced to withdraw from the ERM, after having forced Mrs Thatcher into the policy while she was in charge, she wasted no time in reminding the party that it was a huge mistake as she had predicted 3 years earlier. It also marked to start of the Thatcher view on Europe being proved right again and again even well after her death. She was able to force the Major and Blair Govts to shy away from the single currency as well as giving help to the rise of UKIP.

The bloody Iron Lady was right again.
Thank God she refused to go on the Euro and kept the Pound or the UK would have probably been gone forever.

With the benefit of hindsight though, Norman Tebbit and Margaret Thatcher were correct. David Cameron still likes the EU but it's humiliating him.

@@Red__Law The referendum cost him his job. He is probably working for a think tank now.

Sir John Major should have known better back then. Even though I'm American, it's not hard to see that the issue of Europe has been for the British a continuous debate for decades, predating and surviving his time at 10 Downing Street, and it has long been a polarizing issue.

Ooh I think the white haired gentleman in the corner when Tebbit made his speech is either Jim Prior, Ted Heath or even Lord Soames,
