      I don't know about your course specifically but with all due respect, a video editing course shouldn't be teaching colour correction and grading at all. At least in the professional world, the job of an editor does not involve colour correction. Editing is cutting and assembling shots to tell a story through control of information, time and space. So if you went into that course expecting to learn much about colour grading then you took the wrong course. In a lot of, dare I say independent films, the editor is also the colourist but the colour grading process in the professional field is a bit more complex and technical than that. I can't really comment on it more because that's not my area of expertise.

    • @RollingHousesUK
      @RollingHousesUK 7 лет назад +12

      lamenamethefirst I think you're taking this a bit far. "In the professional world" as you like to put it, people don't go on 4 hour courses to learn to edit video for professional productions - it should seem obvious that someone going on such a course, and consuming videos on the same subject on youtube, is more along the lines of an amateur (perhaps aspiring to be a pro one day), and as such many more aspects than specifically arranging the video clips are going to be required/covered.
      A video editing course shouldn't be confined to your narrow opinion of what it should be, rather it should be tailored to it's intended audience based on their needs, and of course the time scale and cost of the course itself.

    • @lamenamethefirst
      @lamenamethefirst 7 лет назад +9

      You do have a point there. I was just pointing out that it may not be the fault of the course. It may have just been designed without colour grading in mind so it's a bit of an unfair comparison to say that the course is rubbish next to this video. As you yourself said, the course needs to cover a lot of subjects and it might well have. There's a lot to say about editing. So maybe the colour part (which at the end of the day isn't about editing) may have been left out. This video on the other hand is tackling a much more specific topic so it's easier to deliver detailed information about it in a shorter time. This is all just speculation of course. I mean he actually did the course so perhaps it really was rubbish.

    The rule is that you need to be consistent, psychologically we are great in picking these things up. What was more important to mention wa that without good flat profile and a codec that doesn't compress too much you can push a grade far further. As I noticed recently again when I edited a vlog recorded on a MP4 codec, where I usually shoot ProResHQ or Veen cinema dng for shots I know need a lot of work or VFX.

    The difference between the shots in monsters inc. is that the characters separate and then feel isolated being cold and a sense of abandon. While in Toy Story 3 you have characters that even though everything has gone wrong they stick together throughout it and you have a heart warming scene of holding hands approaching their demise in fire. Now say instead of fire being their destruction it was a metal bladed shredder you would've had a blue or much darker color grading.

    Awesome video, very explicative. What is great about nowadays TVs that are coming out with 10-bit HDR panels and DCI P3 gamuts is that, the viewers will finally be able to experience the exact color reproduction that the director and the editor intended. With more colors and shades that the TV is able to reproduce, the more accurate the viewing experience will be. Regardless of the fact that there's no written rule about what colors / tones should be used in a scene, as it's down to the filmmakers' preference.

    Absolutely loved this video. Through out my life I never developed an eye for the art of directing and editing, I mostly paid attention to rich plots. However the last year I was introduced to Wes Anderson and I'm absolutely obsessed, in the course of about 6 months I watched all of his movies at least 8 times. Even though I don't own any filming equipment I truly wish that If I could go back in time and rather than pursue philosophy( which I truly love), pursue film. I think film has the largest palate by far to express art, in a sick way, even though I never met the guy, I know Wes Anderson's mind better than I know most of my closest friend's.

    Absolutely true.
    I know some filmmakers that misunderstood the emotional effect behind colour mood... LOL
    I've seen people ending up with that blueish and dark mood for a happy scene involving happy children playing, just because it looked """"""cinematic"""" !!!!!
    Thanks for sharing this :-)

    Simon, you should start doing videos of in-depth movie breakdowns. That insight on the color difference between the 2 worlds in the Matrix was super interesting. I love hearing about how the composition effects the mood, how one aspect of a movie mirrors another aspect, how correlating colors to emotions/characters effects storytelling, and many more things similar. But I don't want to watch a video of you saying "In filmmaking, many directors associate a color with an important object, and every time we see this color, we think of the object." I'd MUCH rather you talk about a specific film and go over every time we actually see that color used in that way, and see how the director uses that tool throughout the film. I think doing videos like this would be much more helpful, and much more interesting for people in general. I personally would start watching all of your videos instead of only once in a while. Anyway, good job, this video is one of your better ones.

      +Specter Ranger thanks for the suggestion and feedback, I'm definitely interested in analysing films a bit more, it just can be tricky with copyright issues. I think i'll make an effort to work it in to regular episodes more often.

    • @TheSpecterRanger
      @TheSpecterRanger 8 лет назад

      You're doing great as it is, and you're right about the copyrighting. I think the main issue youtubers run into nowadays is the auto-detect software for copyrighted songs, which can take down videos even if the audio is being used in 100% compliance. What I've seen other youtubers do is narrate over those muted clips. Or play clips that don't have music. A great film-analyzing youtube channel is "Every Frame A Painting" who you should check out. Anyway, thanks for your videos and for your response. :)
