    We did this when yokomo came out with their under body aero kit for the yd2. And told everyone it actually works.
    Only I built my scales into a turntable so that we could test aero at an angle like you would be while drifting. EVERY test the yok aero caused lift.

      I seconded this notion. While proving downforce on a straight is a no brainier, downforce while going sideways will be an interesting topic as an rc drifter myself I find there is a big difference running a wing/diffuser while using a short/long bodyshell.

    What you need is laminar flow get a thicker pipe and stick loads of straight straws in it them a reducer so you can fit to the smoke machine, thats how they make those fountains that shoot beams of water, after all air follows the laws of fluid dynamics

      Currently it’s almost 8 feet long 😅 maybe with the help of a 3d printer 🖨️ I could hone in a smaller more compact version. Be awesome to be able to have them trackside 👌🏼

    Please do a touring car body!! Experimenting with different body positions and different wing positions. You can also experiment with the cut of the front and how low the body is. Also because the wings on the touring car body’s are different, they are not the typical aero foil type design that makes downforce by creating negative pressure, so it would be cool to see how it changes stuff

    So awesome to see this! Im currently in the process of making a tunnel to test my Rlaarlo ak 787. Ive been designing aero for the car and 3d printing it also. Ive already got a front splitter with diffuser tunnels, a flat floor with side skirts and a rear diffuser and a wing for it along with lowered ride height. Just driving it i can tell a huge difference, and using a temp gun on the tires after running the car i can see a difference in tire temps compared to before adding the aero. I can't wait to see the numbers when i finish my tunnel. I've got the floor with recessed corner weight scales and the fan assembly completed for the tunnel. I just need to build the rest around that. Inspiring to see someone else taking small scale aero seriously as well. 👍👍

    I had a Tamiya Colin Mcrae Ford Focus when I was younger. That shell was sooo good for handling compared to a bunch of others I tried when I was younger. Not drifting, but racing around car parks.

    It's pretty easy to find out what's the most downforce. The F1 cars from the 80's that used ground effect had the most aerodynamics and were banned because they were too good and going too fast. Just look up ground effect F1 cars from the 80's, it's basically a bottom plate that has sides that fall down onto the tarmac, which creates a vortex under the car sucking it down, that should in theory be one of the best aerodynamics you can get. Today's F1 cars use ground effect aswell, but not to the extreme extent they had in the 80's, they have alot more regulations nowadays to make sure the cars don't make too much downforce. It all depends on what you mean by what's the "most aerodynamic" , cause that can mean 2 things: either most downforce, or least drag. In terms of the 80's F1 cars that would be the most downforce, they had alot of drag so .. :) PS. great idea! and nice work! got yourself a like & a sub for the creativity :)

    Having a moving ground underneath is very important, you could make a two pulley system with a belt to place the cars on. As well make the length about 4” longer than anything you plan on putting on it. Hope that helps!

    Testing a 90's Pro10 pancar would be fun. They were known catch air under the front wing if their ride height was to high resulting in back flips on the track.

    How does the droop / raising of the front going to affect the downforce. Could go sealed under tray / modified tray or as best as possible seal between the chassis and the shell.

      It has to right. I’m gonna heat ride hights and angles of rake for sure. Under trays is an interesting one as maybe the cutouts in a carbon desk help to prevent lift when the cars lifting under acceleration 🤔

    Ive been chasing 1/10 drift r/c with a 40 gram Tiny Whoop for a little over a year now and there’s definitely a little bit of aero happening, it moves me around a bit when I’m right behind and if I do a super close head on pass it kicks me up a bit which you can actually see in the footage of an edit I’m putting up this weekend

    Lets start with how awesome this is!

    I have worked in climate control for the composting industy for 8 years (now i have switched to machine engineering for 4 years). Airflow is a bitch!
    I always had the idea of building a windtunnel for my sleedrunner 200+kmph but as you said air is not scalable so making a diy 200+kmph wind tunnel is not feasable at home.
    Your concept is great!
    -Smoke machine with one small straw with smooth corners *Great!
    -weiging the car *Great!
    -Air flow fins before the fan *Great!
    -Funnel at the front and rear *Great!
    I know its hobby grade and you get results, thats great! But did you preform a control test on the tunnel? Without a car or anything else in it?
    To see if the tunnel itself doesnt create turbulance?
    It is possible you funnel in the front creates a small terbulance, it is possible that your wind guides at the end create different air speeds towards the fan.
    In the middel of the fan its connected to the axle and thats were the fan does not create air flow.
    I would recoment (if not done already and only if you want to) to make a contol test of the tunnel without anything in it. To make sure all airspeed inside the tunnel is the same.
    Than do a control test with the car in it and measure the speed everywere to see if the speed is all the same. Air can be compressen between the car and the side of the tunnel and air can flow faster there.

    There is a small gif on this page showing air pressure arround an object. If the excess of pressure is hitting the sidr of the tunnel the tunnel is to small.
    A few things to reduce turbulance from the tunnel itself or betweet the car and the tunnel is to make the tunnel bigger.
    If you have done some control test and you decide to modify your tunnel i can help you redesign a tunnel.

    Add a laser line ( think the laser levels ) the projects down from the top. That will help you see the smoke cross section better.
    And you need the flow straighteners in front of the car not the back .

    You need to test side force aswell since they are moving sideways through the air. If you look into American dirt oval modified bodies, they design the sides to create downforce as they slide through corners.
    The WPL at the end was gold 😂

    Motorize rotating play form the turns 180 side to side with a separate controller for a sevro that’s strong enough to rotate the car make the window display curved…it’s gonna be big but it would be a nice shot

    Yes, aerodynamics works at all speeds, the effects are just lessened, or different depending on the speed and what's being observed, conceptually it's pretty obvious the atmosphere is always present and therefore providing some effect to the objects inside it whoever told you otherwise is just misinformed.
    if you want an easy example of extreme low speed aerodynamics, hold a piece of paper up by one side on a flat desk or low friction surface and drop it, the curved shape of the paper will act like a sail and tend to slide the paper across the table, and it does so from an action that accelerates it VERY slowly, much lower than 10 mph.

    This was great. I would have liked to see another test with no aero and no windspeed checker.
    There seemed to be a bias in the weight distribution to the left side of the car which is where the wond speed checker was.
    Either way though this was incredible.

    Wow, 10g. At full blast, in a straight line.
    I think it's safe to say the downforce at realistic speeds and at full drift angle, with most of the wing obstructed by the side plates, is practically zero.
    A fresh pair of tyres is going to add more weight to the car's rear than aero.
    Yes, physics work at every scale - I know from racing 1:10 touring cars that aero kits and spoiler angles make a difference on fast tracks - but when the baseline is slow moving drift chassis with a shell that wasn't designed to aerodynamically efficient, there's nothing to gain from having this, sadly.
    It's cool, and building it is an achievement, but that's it.
    But if it's about the journey and not the destination, maybe try and add some more realistic features to the wind tunnel, like a rolling road with load cells in the frame instead of the scales.
    Maybe then put that contraption on a rotary table to simulate drift angles?

    I have a feeling this gonna be a game changing to the Rc hobby world especially for people who does alot of rc speed runs that goes over 200mph, that’s gonna be a lot of help to see if parts that are built from the factory or custom built from 3D printers actually does something.

      I agree. I think the rc speed running community under estimates what real aero could do for stability on runs. All you ever see are flat no shape wings and long fins. Nothing that really works the air to hold the car down. I think proper downforce could change the loading on the foam tires as well. Maybe for the better if it keeps the tire in contact with the pavement more firmly. Possibly less frequent over speeding of one wheel when it loses grip leading to less foam blowouts?       200mph was broken in 2013. Speedrunners seem like they're moving backwards. Like let's take everything we've learned, and do it wrong.

      @@16-BITFPV There are a lot more options for power trains and esc's now so brute force will get a lot of speed. I just hate seeing the 200mph crashes. Fastest I went with my Vendetta was 107mph. Anything over about 70-80 with that car and the front end would want to get light. I added some canard wings and a front splitter and it definitely helped.

    At 14:45, just looking at the wind pattern on the 240 shell, maybe flipping the rear wing around 180 degrees may create a better wind flow at rear?

    One thing that scale RC guys dont get is that MPH @ Full scale or 10th it's all the same speed. It's a fallacy that we all fall into...
    MPH is a constant @ Any Scale or Size for that matter

    It looks like the mini spoiler at the top of rear window hinders the airflow over the larger spoiler at the rear of the car.

    On your Team Green. I wonder what difference the top spoiler makes at top of window. It gives neg pressure behind which draws the air down, would this bring more air onto the rear wing for downforce or would the rear window body line allow better flow over the rear wing? That would be an interesting thing to see as the Skyling has a cleaner flow over the back without one.
