  • SUMMER DAYTIME AM DX: 540kHz Kossuth Radio from 2000kW tx Solt, Hungary, received near Warsaw at 600km - 100% pure groundwave with ZERO ionospheric reflection.
    Recorded on 4.06.2020 14:00 CET (12:00 UTC)
Receiver: AOR AR-8600 + Yagi antenna as an AM aerial
Medium wave propagation is an interesting model, because it gives an opportunity to DX both with ionosphere (at night all year round) and by groundwave (in the summer daytime). If you are already familiar with some FM DXing, here's the explanation: The nighttime skywave DX resembles Sporadic E DXing - except it is not sporadic, but regular at night for this band:) The groundwave DX is much like FM DXing by tropo - the reach is adequate to the transmitter power. In areas, where there are no MW transmitters (which today is the case for many places in Europe), the band can seem dead silent during the day. But, if you have a fine DX shack, you can pull in some foreign stations even throughout the daytime. The daily groundwave MW DX is an underappreciated DX target, because the same daytime DX stations provide much stronger signals by skywave at night.
In the evening and at night, the reception of MR1 Kossuth Hungary is simply glorious, but the point of this video is to show how a groundwave of this powermonster performs on my setup - in summer midday, when there is ZERO ionospheric propagation. The real daily groundwave can only be observed in summer, at daytime. Don't be fooled with "daytime" "achievements" recorded from september to april. Starting in Autumn and continuing throughout winter until Spring, ionosphere at 50N latitude and up is present 24h and you can't get a pure groundwave.
(Kasprowy Wierch!)

Great groundwave reception of Hungary at your location. Many congrats & 73s!

Thanks. Solt is like a beacon here. I tune it to check if everything is alright with the set up and if any receiver cannot pick it up, it means its it's not suitable for listening. Another still reliable one is the Czech pair on 639 kHz.

Hi my friend, this is cool! I didn't expect that this station would reach Varšava in daytime. It has to cross both mountains - first Nízke and then Vysoké Tatry. I'm on holiday in home in Central Slovakia (an hour from Czech border) and I can receive your Jedynka in daytime too. But proper rotation of radio is needed. Thanks for sharing, 73s Ron!

Hi Ron, good to have you here and back in Central Europe :) I only realised the Tatra-wall while preparing a caption for this upload. S pozdravom!

Hi. No salty sea on the path - instead, if you look closer at the map, you will find out that the highest Polish mountains- Tatras stand their wall midway.

@@XPLORADIO I am amazed by the signal path and no propogation. Good day Emel :) 73!

Hey there, very interesting to see it works all the way in Poland! 540kHz is very strong at my location even during the day, one of the very few stations that work. The only stronger station is R-DVOJKA at 639kHz.
How do you receive Czech stations on MW/LW at your QTH during the day? 73s from CZ.

Hello there. Actually, 639 kHz is my second reliable MW daytime signal. But is comes constantly "waving" because there are 2 txs: Liblice and Ostrava. I also get very weak Romania 603 and Czechia again 954, barely. 73!

One time I received Kossuth at summer mid-day on Degen DE1103 with built-in-whip antenna. 73!

Ionosphere sometimes behaves like that. I encountered once or twice a daytime propagation to Balkans or Benelux, but it's quite rare. Kossuth sounds daily just like posted here. Thanks and 73!
