  • Mukhtiyar Ali is a folk singer from Bikaner in Rajasthan. He was born in a small village called Pugal on the North West frontier of India and belongs to the semi-nomadic community of Mirasis, who have been the traditional carriers of the oral tradition of Sufiana Qalam in India. Mukhtiyar blends the Rajasthani folk idiom with refined classicism to sing the poetry of Kabir, Mira and Sufi poets such as Bulleh Shah.
Mukhtiyar Ali, who is the 26th generation Sufi singer from Rajasthan belonging to the Mirasi community, insists that Sufi kalam is about looking for Him - evoking Him who is present within ‘us’. Living in the hot and arid Pugal in Rajasthan, Mukhtiyar has been witness to many contradictory shades in the world of music. Much like the music he sings, his talks too, are not devoid of hidden meanings.
Here is his performance staged at Niranthara National Theatre Festival 2014-15 at Kalamandira, Mysuru.
    On Stage:
    Mukhtiyar Ali
    Ali Sher (Back Vocals)
    Ustad Dayam Ali (Sarangi)
    Ustad Gulam Hussain (Tabla)
    Rakesh Kumar (Dholki)

Since he sang with great feeling and skill, besides some intervening improvisations, he has come closest to Nusrat. Rajasthani touch through Sarangi and dholak leaves a deep impact. Surinder Singh, a historian from Chandigarh.
