  • It's our first day in Kuching Sarawak Malaysia.
Kuching is our first stop on a 4 week journey across the Malaysian side of Borneo. Today we explore the Sarawak river in Kuching but everything goes wrong on the boat. Certainly not the best way to start our Sarawak or Borneo adventure, but we are very positive about what is coming next.

KOLO MEE (DRY SARAWAK MALAYSIAN CHINESE NOODLES)

Kolo Mee is a dry-style Sarawak Malaysian Chinese noodle featuring springy egg noodles, savoury ground pork, sliced BBQ pork and aromatic fried onions.
Growing up, I always remembered my Mom's cooked hot lunches in the summertime.
Sunny afternoons and the wafting air of freshly fried onion flakes signaled that my stomach would be in for a delicious treat.
It would also indicate that my mother was making one of my favourite noodle dishes: Kolo Mee.
      x
      WHAT IS KOLO MEE?
Kolo Mee is a dry-style Sarawak Malaysian Chinese noodle.
"Kolo" comes from the Chinese Cantonese translation "gon lo" or literally, "dry mix."
"Mee" refers to "noodle" in the Hokkien Chinese dialect.
The noodles are topped with ground pork and fragrant crispy fried onions.
While different than wonton noodles, which are usually served in soup, these kolo mee noodles are served with just enough sauce.
The one that you try is cooked by Malay because we are staying in mix culture.

We are going to Kuching near the end of October and are so excited. Laksa Sarawak is so delicious! Gary ate Laksa for breakfast every day when we stayed in Labuan at the Palm Beach Resort Hotel. After our planned stay in Kuching we are going back to Labuan for relaxation and later to Kota Kinabalu to do some wilderness camping. You are going to love Borneo! Looking forward to more Borneo videos! Can you recommend a hotel in Kuching?

Good afternoon .. welcome to Kuching. The kolo mee you are having is the Malay version with beef. There is a Chinese version which you can find in most coffee shops. Food in Kuching is generally less spicy. We prefer soups and mild flavoured food. Enjoy the rest of your holidays here. 🧡

As a Kuching born I am a bit disappointed that safety awareness seems to be lacking in the boat operator. I presume its endorsed by local tourism authorities but I can see that life vests are there but not enforced. The Sarawak river is a big river and the current can be sometimes strong even though its relatively very calm. Also its infested by crocodiles, there have been cases in Kuching. So it was alarming when Roslin went into the water. Regardless hope there will be improvements and that experience did not spoil your travels.

I am British but have lived in Sarawak for six years, in December I was on one of those boats, with my family , including a pram , life jackets were provided, to be honest I am sure that a lot of foreigners do not want to wear their life jackets , they are provided, we wore them , but I can imagine the boat operators having people who refuse, safety is your responsibility too .
Our boat also broke down but was fixed easily, but it’s all part of the fun

Kuching is one of my favourite city!
If you like nature and wildlife, you may consider to go to these places. I think they don't get enough coverage in RUclips. Very accessible by public bus from Kuching city center. You might need to do some research because the timing to go there is important.
    1. Bako National Park - stay there one night. Book accommodation from Sarawak Forestry website before you go. Take Bus Asia (only RM1 one way) to the jetty. Go early morning so that you can share the boat cost with other tourists. Do the day hike on your own and get a guided night trekking
    2. Semenggoh Wildlife Center - Home for the OrangUtans. Daytrip from Kuching. Take the free electric bus from Kuching. Check the bus schedule because the time usually coincide with the feeding time at the center
    Enjoy your time in Kuching!

True adventure of Sarawak is the nature, culture and calmness. If you are a city person sarawak could be boring but if you want to see more of Sarawak you need to stay out of town do more adventure in the rural area, long houses, experience life, cuisine(local food) outside of town, with the local people. Real engage with their life it will blown up your mind. Not many vlogger are open enough to do such thing. See what the local do and survive. Take your time enjoy your moment. Most of vlogger have much plan in schedule but often left with so many uncovered gems of life experince. Dont lets suggestion or other vlogger experience leads your path but do thing that you will someday remember till the day you grow old. Do different thing could lead to your success and your happiness. Your goal should help you to be better person. Thank you for your humbleness and sorry for you bad experience but thats the life of most the rural people are experience. Boat is their only transportation to go in and out of long houses. For me your experience with the boat is a blessing in disguise. Indirectly you just experience the life of local in the rural area experience sometimes and triple time scary in a such big river. You are a blessing to chose this state. Have a good one guys. Hope for your success

That was not really a nice start to your Kuching adventure… 😅 Really sorry about that. Bad as the garbage situation in the river, it is by far a lot better than decades ago. There used to be a sort of water villages along the river in the olden days until the government decided to move them further inside and had the river “cleaned”. The old man manning the second boat reflects the dying boat operating (13:45). They’re already using engine now as compared to the 80s (when I used to use the boat crossing the river)… Maybe when the old men are gone, the boats would probably be gone too…
By the way… while you guys are in the vicinity, do try indigenous food at Pinggai Cafe in Carpenter Street (Chinatown).

I stayed at Imperial riverbank just 2 weeks ago. By the way another must try is kek lapis Sarawak. There's one just nearby where you had the boat ride. The shop is kek lapis mama su if I'm not wrong. You can try out the many flavours they have. Enough to fill your stomach as a tea snack

Hi, Sarawakian here, its sad to know that on your first day in Kuching. I'm gonna subscribe your channel and watch all of your travel experiences in Borneo. Hope you find 'joy' & 'happy experiences' in your holiday trip in Sarawak. Oh ya, the dark soy sauce is mixture with vinegar, best when dipping on steamed meat.

    Hi guys
You should pour the soup and chili soy sauce into bowl of noodle.. mixed up everything. That's how the local eats. It's much more flavor. 😊

While you two lovebirds are in sarawak, you should head to the city of miri 😅 it's 12-14 hour drive from kuching to the other end of sarawak! 😂
Seriously though, they have the annual miri international jazz festival at the marina there, but idk when exactly it is 😂
Fret not hahah, for miri too has other attractions, mostly outdoorsy:
_Niah cave_ - very popular including among foreign nature loving tourists
_Mulu cave_ - ditto Niah cave, but people say it's even more beautiful
_Loagan bunut_ - much less popular among both local and foreign tourists, it's actually a designated national park, inhabited by one small local sarawak ethnic community, and the attraction here is taking a boat (oh, not again! 😂hahah) to cruise around the lake in the middle, which serves the locals with food ie. fish that are caught with scoops and kept in cages, all mounted on rafts that may also be the houses for some of the families, and a word of reminder: no outsiders can catch a fish in here, not without an expressed permission by the community, so no fishing guys, but you can ask (and pay) a local to show you how they do their unique way of catching a fish, even grilling it and having a fish lunch right there on his raft. But if you go there during dry season including around june/july, the big lake that is the attraction in the park, becomes dry 😔 - but worry not, it instantly transforms into another attraction instead, for this is when you can witness a gathering of various birds, mousedeers, squirrels, gibbons etc, all having a _makan makan kenduri_ (mukbang fiesta) not entirely dissimilar to our own hari raya open house 😂 at the dried up lake! 😬

    Eventful day. :)
Sarawak doesn't have a lot of spicy food.
Kolo mee is Sarawakian Chinese in origin. Look for a Chinese cook for the original pork version. there are three versions -- white, red, and black. The original is white. The red one is sweet, the black one is made with black caramel soy -- not sweet, but somewhere between sweet and savoury. The noodles are usually served with pickled chilli pepper in distilled vinegar sauce, but it looks like you might have gotten fish sauce -- similar to Worchestershire sauce, so I guess you had the local Malay version. The Malays call almost everything "sambal" -- which actually just means "sauce" in Sarawak. "Sambal" also means "sauce" in the Peninsular, but over there the guys consider sauce to be incomplete without chilli peppers -- the more the better. Kuching is my hometown. I'm dying from chilli peppers here in West Malaysia.

Actually, that area is Indian Street not China Town. Kolok mee has a few versions (halal) that you had (chicken and beef) and (non-halal) served with pork. Next you should try (non-halal) version.
