I would like to see a Tips and Tricks part 4 video with information about what you're using for getting diagnostic and service information to repair your vehicles. I'm a part time mechanic and only work on a couple cars a week. I had been using ALLDataDIY but I just went to their site today and the pricing went up from $15.95 per year for a vehicle to $19.99 per month. I'm at a loss for affordable forms of service information and I'm sure there are others in a similar situation to the one I'm in. I can't really afford to pay $180+ per month for the volume of work I do. Thanks again for all of your awesome content!!!!

I saw many good tips, a few of which I will use, thank you. I like your box at the end. I think that would be a great Identifix subscription replacement for DIY guys. You have a good imagination Matt.
If you don't have a spare hockey puck lying around (I certainly don't), you can buy rubber jack adapters like that for very little. I don't know why they are not supplied as standard, since the alternative is a ruined sill.
There is such a thing as a nail brush. I think they sell them at Dollar Tree for $1. That or your trick is an idea that should be shared with most of the cooking channels on RUclips. Almost hilarious that a mechanic is concerned about dirt under his nails when few of the chefs are. Bon appetit!
And as for the box method, have you got those charts in a pdf you could make available? Do you have a list of all the parts needed or possible for every error code? To avoid buying so many boxes, can I just take take the list of possible parts for an error code to Autozone when I see that code? That way, I push the storage of the parts off on them, and I only have to buy parts for each code I see. Efficiency is the key to saving money and effort.

Got to get a pair of those 'anti divorce' shoes, also love the soap idea. Always start out with gloves but they soon rip and before I can get a new pair on, oil everywhere. Love your humour too, though the 88%ers will now be searching e-bay for those boxes.
I was half expecting to see Killy jump out of the box (Scotty in the Box.....)....or the box doing a burn out down the street.... REV UP YOUR PARTS CANNON!!!
Careful about suggesting the magic solution box idea. Parts stores might take this idea and run with it, offering a "bundled solution" to common problems. ;-)
Hello c Have a question and hope you can help . I have to torque a sway bar links with 40 f.pound but my torque wrench start from 50 f.pound . Can I torque it 50fp instead of 40 ?
I have 1 tip and 1 trick/hack..... Tip: try washing your hands with liquid laundry soap ( with oxi works best) it's absolutely amazing how great it works and skin feels good afterwards too! And for the trick/hack... Just trick someone from AutoZone to "fix" the car before hand.... By the time they give up you can automatically rule out the new O2 sensors, battery, alternator, maf, purge valve, the 2nd and 3rd sets of O2 sensors and 3 gas caps lol
You probably have covered this... Your most important tester is between your ears! Code says miss #4 cylinder, "Intermittent" and and everything looks good, and not missing now. Swap plug with #3, wire w/ #2, coil w/ #1. Clear codes and drive until light re-appears. Change the part moved to the "New"offending cylinder. If still #4, consider injector.
That is exactly the way I did it before I bought an oscilloscope. Either way- its scientific. Rule out variables until the independent variable is found and then validate the effect of that variable to confirm.
@@SchrodingersBox Yes, I totally agree. 55 years ago, before smog, I thought I had made the big leagues when I got a dwell meter and a timing light. No more using a feeler gauge and a tachometer to set points and timing. After completing the IGO Mechanics
Apprenticeship program, I've worked my way up to retirement. I still own a complete shop full of special tools, like a Snap-on Verus. But, it is still what's between our ears that separates the men from the boys, right?
Great tip on the wiring diagrams. Unfortunately, the wiring diagrams at BBBIndustries is now very incomplete. They suffered a DoS attack some time ago and took the site down. They moved all their diagrams from Revbase to their own server but, unfortunately, all the diagrams never made it back. I always check there first, and can always find a few diagrams for every car but have found myself now having to purchase AlldataDIY subscriptions to get the actual diagrams I need. It's frustrating as I used to use them a LOT.
If you decide to make a Part 4, here's a hack you can try and see if you think it is useful. For stripped out bolt threads, you can either spend your lunch money on a package of helicoils, or you can use several strands of copper wire laid out crossing the bolt hole in various angles, insert the bolt, and it will tighten up with the copper forming into what remains of the grooves...you'll still get to eat lunch that day!

Great question!! I will cover this in a future video but you need to do a Volumetric Efficiency calculation as shown on the link in the video. It's not only different in different cars but different in the same car with different conditions!! Only calculating VE is accurate enough for diagnosis.
Just for info, I was really thankful for the wiring diagrams and TSB site tip, however, it doesn't support a lot of UK cars. Skoda aren't even listed at all and whilst MG are listed, there's no info. Any other sites like that which may have UK cars?
The fight that changed things in America was a 'right to repair' legal precedent. It required manufacturers to make repair data available to all mechanics, not just those who have the inside track at dealerships. Evidently the same conflict didn't happen in Europe, so getting dealers manuals and TSBs through aftermarket providers like Alldata or Mitchell is impossible. This is the main reason I won't ever buy a European made car.
@@SchrodingersBox This same legal fight is now going on in the micro repair industry of Apple and various other phones/computers. Apple are reluctant to publish circuit diagrams, citing valid concerns about security, but on the surface refusing to offer parts to non OEM independent technicians. So, independent repair technicians are using diagrams and parts from the aftermarket and black market, repairing devices that Apple claim are not reparable. Interestingly, when Apple take these same phones and computers for warranty repair, they fix them, then put the fixed devices into a pool that are given to customers who make warranty claims....

Mr Cats... that presentation was epic as usual... im concerned with the end hack tho... i mean.. OFFICIALLY... that was Not a box... more of a TUB, you could agree... however the TITLE of the boxtub fits its intended reference - quite well... 😆.. you're great man, learned tons from you
Thanks- and actually you have a point on the tub PLUS if you think about it, the "Kilmore The Car Guy TUB" sounds way better.
@@SchrodingersBox ... yessir... id love More of your experiences with these Tubs... maybe, when you get a customer complaint in.. you could start your diag with a Tub assessment.. lay the fix out on the table.. then do what you do.. would be a great watch.. cheers man
Love this series
Hi Justin great to see you!
ROTFLMAO!!! Rev up your parts cannons is perfect hahahahahaha!!!!!!
Careful about suggesting the magic solution box idea. Parts stores might take this idea and run with it, offering a "bundled solution" to common problems. ;-)
Hahaha. that would help those people who just replace parts right in the parking lot so they can just run back in to try the next thing!!
Hello c
Have a question and hope you can help .
I have to torque a sway bar links with 40 f.pound but my torque wrench start from 50 f.pound .
Can I torque it 50fp instead of 40 ?
Yes that is fine.
Thanks
I have 1 tip and 1 trick/hack..... Tip: try washing your hands with liquid laundry soap ( with oxi works best) it's absolutely amazing how great it works and skin feels good afterwards too! And for the trick/hack... Just trick someone from AutoZone to "fix" the car before hand.... By the time they give up you can automatically rule out the new O2 sensors, battery, alternator, maf, purge valve, the 2nd and 3rd sets of O2 sensors and 3 gas caps lol
True that!!!
But u did have some cool hacks I like paper towel idea and quart funnel good one some other keep up whit good idea bro
These are better than Car Wizards!
I was using a metal pully to reduce my contact area never considered a hockey puck or the groove on it👍
If you have a broken hard disk drive you can get two strong magnets and a mirror (the platter) that won't break when you drop it.
Always great wisdom found here .. this is the Dorman Parts R Us channel right?? Bruddah, when I getting my spoon back?
Hahahaha when I get my needle back thats when!!!
Thanks for the update. Yeah something happened two weeks ago because I used it just before then.
BBB industries as of Jan 2020 no longer has wiring diagrams. Any other sites you use for troubleshooting?
Yeah that sucks. No, I am unaware of other resources sorry.
Great hack! Yes I have tried that before and it works great!!!
Hi I have a 1997 dodge Dakota 3.9 gas..about 2 months ago I started to notice it losing power and every now and then a code GEN started showing on the dash.about a month ago it shut off twice on me while coming to a stop.today it won’t stay running when engine warms up after that it shuts off quicker with every start only running for about 1-4 minutes on warm engine in ANY gear at a stop or while accelerating it would just shut off each start gets harder as engine warms.i changed out the tps and the iac and the battery as it then started needing a jump.unclogged the back cat also.please ANY suggestions would be HIGHLY appreciated!
Thanks
I need to see the data that showed the TPS and IAC were bad? What were the IAC counts at idle va load that indicated your IAC was malfunctioning?
How Do i Know which OBD values the maf sensor has to show in different cars? How can check the maf sensor with OBD? Thx from Germany 👍
Great question!! I will cover this in a future video but you need to do a Volumetric Efficiency calculation as shown on the link in the video.
It's not only different in different cars but different in the same car with different conditions!! Only calculating VE is accurate enough for diagnosis.
That’s was awesome
@@spelunkerd Thanks, useful info...
Just saw this, Dave. Fantastic info. Worthy of a video in itself actually!!
Interestingly, when Apple take these same phones and computers for warranty repair, they fix them, then put the fixed devices into a pool that are given to customers who make warranty claims....
you're a god
You mean I don't exist?
Hello !

was just trying to use a turkey baster to remove some old gas...worked like crap...wish i saved some syringes from my meth days like you did lol
Yeah volatiles and aromatics lack the surface tension to use a baster.
Wiring diagrams also provided by public library .giving you acces to chilton and alldata.or buy alldata on ebay for less then 50$ thanks fotlr tips..not o2sensor is a p0420 blinker fluid low
YESSIR! welcome "back" !!
for dirt under the fingernails, i usually just get a knife/pick and carefully scrape it out
The first video of yours that I watched I understood the connection between you and your name (schrodingers box). To me it's a practical joke on scientist's whether the cat is dead or alive. They don't know, they can only guess, much like the 98% they say it's both..........dead and alive LOL. To me the name fits perfect with your sense of irony and sarcasm. I don't know if this is what you were going for, just how I see it. Also, shame on you! You got me with the box's!! I really thought a terrific hack was coming.........I should have known LOL
Thanks for the soap hack for the fingernails!
Went to go checkout the BBB Wiring diagrams... no longer available :(
yeah that sucks. they actually took it down like a week after I made this video.
Hey Matt
YOUR Hilarious
Did you intentionally use a possessive???!!!!! Argh!!!!
