Keep practicing stick, can't tell you how many times being able to stick weld has helped me. Many times when you are outside and gas shielded wire just won't work or when your base material can't be properly cleaned. Awesome review!
Yes, I have done welding in windy weather outside but used fluxcore wire, the only time I have genuinely needed stick welding was in the middle of nowhere welding with 12 volt batteries.
One huge tip, on any rod as mentioned every rod has a fav position the main thing when you push or pull the puddle you tend to rotate the tip and pull up and when you do that the arc gets longer and shorter and Causes issues try running slower and brace a bit better to keep the tip steady. That's why it seems easier as the rod burns and gets really short.
With that 7018 rod you need to travel at a drag angle about 15 degrees and move SLOW don't oscillate the rod. That's most likely why you're getting porosity, because you're welding over slag that your weld made. Just angle the rod 45 degrees to that t joint, and stinger towards the direction of travel (drag angle), move very slow and keep about a 3/32 or less arc distance with the tip of the rod. It take loads of practice, but you'll get it. Good luck buddy
To tell you the truth I probably will never use the stick feature again. I only did it for the video. I specifically bought this machine for mig and tig functions.
Auto Repair Tips . I have my degree in welding technology and know how to stick weld properly as well. But I mig and tig weld for a living. If you'd like some tips don't be afraid to ask. You can see some of my stuff on instagram if you'd like. @Welding_with_skill
😂 I can't tell you how many guys with mullets at my work say when they're slag you drag, ROFL it depends on how hot you're running whether or not you push or drag
I like the shit out of the machine so far. Although everything I have actually needed it for my previous welder would do as well but this is certainly much nicer and smoother and has way more control over the voltage.
Michael Smith I’ve been a pipeline welder for 15 years I know all about rod manipulation... that’s a low hy rod... you don’t have to do shit to it... drag it... unless your going up hill but even then you don’t have to manipulate it much ...
I'm not sure, I know they changed the design of the welding cart to fit the larger welders. This one is really designed for the older black welders so it doesn't fit that great.
Looked like you were pushing the rod. Drag the rod and with 7018 never leave the puddle. Strike your arc and sit a few seconds then start moving slowly dragging a puddle about the size and shape of your baby finger nail. 1/8 on the flat should be running around 110 and stinger positive. Your slag should peel off nicely. Any porosity at all constitutes a bad weld. 7018 is a low hydrogen wire and in a controlled environment once the can is opened, the wire goes and stays in an oven. For the weekend warrior, keeping it in an enclosed container and in a very dry location will do. The wire will suck up humidity out of the air after long periods. We all do it but will effect weld quality in some way.
Auto Repair Tips Get a CK ultra flex. You'll need the Lincoln twist mate connection. 17 series is more common you should get a stuby gas lense setup too. You can get all this on Amazon for under a hundred bucks. You probably will need to get the Vulcan pedal though. Honestly the pedal and aluminum filler is decent but the torch is bulky and heavy as hell.
@@horseblinderson4747 Late reply, but thanks for this. I was wondering if there was any compatibility with the connection, other than the HF option, and this gives me a start at figuring it out...
The flux cored 120 does perfectly fine in my experience. This is a great welder really. I do not use the presets though the wire feed is always wayyyyy to high.
Their a little expensive but not all that bad in my opinion. I bought 10lbs of the stuff because A. I don't have a tractor supply in my area, and B. lowes and depot only sell the AC 7018s from Lincoln and I refuse to run those with my dc inverter machine (PA200ST). Their just terrible simply put, but if Im in a pinch and dont have time to wait for an order of Excalibur 7018s to come in the mail, I have no problem with the vulcan 7018s or 6011s aside from the price. If I had to pick between hobart and vulcan for my 7018s I think Id go with vulcan honestly, but for everything else lincoln/hobart/excaliburs
On your fillet welds, you want the work angle to be 45 degrees with a travel angle of 5-15 degrees. You must drag so that you don’t trap slag. Also, I hope you disconnected your vehicle’s battery before welding or you risk frying the computer.
Will Clemons it was about trying to hold a phone watch what it was recording and stick welding for the first time in a long time and liberally the first time I had ever stick welded on this machine and less than 10 minutes on the machine total.
I can see by your replies to comments that you do not take constructive criticism very well. If that is a problem for you, maybe you should not be making video's. All I will say is "Practice"
Well one thing's for sure, everyone who has made a video that people watch on RUclips have comments criticizing something about what they are doing. I'll be honest, I am not going to practice stick welding. I have not used the stick welding feature since I made this video. I have no intention of ever getting better at stick welding. I only wanted this machine for the MIG and TIG features. When I made this video there were literally zero other videos of using this machine with stick welding and only 2 others with MIG. I am sure there were people who were curious at the time of production as to the stick operation of this machine and hopefully I answered some of their questions when no other information was available.
@@AutoRepairTips hay I'm looking into buying this machine would you give me an honest opinion on the Mig and Tig. Is it worth buying or should I look elsewhere? I'm new to welding and it's just for hobby kinda stuff. Thanks in advance and good luck.
Hill Billy this machine is way more than you need for just hobby stuff. I have several buddies who are professional welders who have bought these machines for in shop welders so they don't have to use welder generators all the time. I have yet to use the tig welder function as I need to get a separate gas bottle.
@@HillBilly-1 One note about the Tig function on the OmniPro 220 -- there is no feature to have the welder control gas flow, i.e. the solenoid valve is not operable in the Tig mode. Standard operation is that there's a gas hose right off the Tig torch cable connection to the welder. That goes straight to your gas bottle/regulator, and you manually control gas flow with a valve on the Tig torch. So no automatic control of pre-flow, post flow, etc, and you have to do that by hand. Not necessarily a deal-breaker, but you should know this before you buy, if you're looking at using this as a Tig machine. . Stick is great for the right application like thick plate. I would keep working at it.
@Weaver Cattle Company I've done 16 gauge with stick but I much prefer mig or tig for that. I prefer stick for 1/4" and thicker.
