- If you've been to certain gas stations recently, you may have seen that some of your gasoline is getting a special additive called ethanol. Like gasoline, ethanol is easily ignited and creates a lot of energy while it burns. But here's the hitch, ethanol burns cleaner than gasoline. It's a little step that fuel companies are taking towards going green. This experiment will show you just how combustible ethanol is and why it's a great additive for fuel. @piepeep90 Because he turned on the high frequency transformer. The mics are wireless and the HF transformer gave off a frequency that the mics were sensitive to.
done this in chem class, pretty cool

@KurogetsuOokami - If it's pure ethanol, the only things you'll find in there will be alcohol and water. However, most ethanol is denaturated so that people don't use it to produce spirits (or to drink directly). Some of those denaturants are poisonous, and nearly all of them have a horrible taste (which is kind of the point).
That what's he pouring out after combustion is not water but excess ethanol. Although water is created the amount of it is far less than he could pour like that. If that white bottle has volume of 1 liter (and it probably has less, which means less water) the amount of oxygen in it is enough for burning less than 3 drops of ethanol which produces very close amount of water, and it is probably mostly vaporized.

And that's because of the high frequency. The tesla coil (which is what it is) radiates at about 500khz to 1000khz in frequency of radio emmisssions. And at 50kv the radio signal is VERY strong (enough to ionize the gas in a fluorescent lamp one foot away from the coil). I'm not surprized at all that the EMI (electromagnetic interference) messed with their mics. In fact I'm surprized it didn't fry/damage the circuits in their studio equipment (mics and cameras and other A/V equipment).
@3clecticskater any fuel injected car can run off of ethanol. the air to fuel ratio would need to be lower than that of gasoline due to ethanol needing more to be spent in order to compensate to the normal gasoline air to fuel ratio

yeah you get water, which then rusts the insides of your car's engine. Good old fashioned fuel without EPA tampering is much more efficient. >_< Still, a great experiment and neat effect with the ping pong ball.

It doesn't come free. It has to be produced from crops on fields, which to grow need fertilizer, gas powered trucks, production plants. Also the if you're using land for "ethanol" crops you can't use the land for food production.
In the end it seems pretty stupid to use ethanol to drive cars (as long as we don't find better source for ethanol). Even worse some countries chop down rain forests to plant "fuel" crops for export. Does more harm than good to the environment.
Im stupid i tried to burn a bottle of hand sanitiser which is 60% ethanol then it exploded on my hand. Hurt but not much damage
