My dad would sing this to my older sisters my twin brother and I when we were little before bed on those rare occasions when he was home. He worked three jobs for ten years while our Mom worked two. I remember he would always carry my twin brother and me upstairs and put us to bed. I really miss him. He’s been dead seven years, my eldest sister told me that our father’s final words were last verse of this song. The day Daddy died, I smelled my Dad’s favorite pipe tobacco while I was hanging out laundry when went back in the house the phone rang and without a hello I said, “Daddy’s gone isn’t he?” EZ, my twin brother said, “They’ve just pronounced time of death.” Drove all night all the way up to Michigan by myself to the hospital met my siblings in the lobby where we cried together holding each other.
I cried tears of wonder and joy when as a watched Elizabeth brisby save her children with the power of love, I felt my inner child come alive and remembered whom I was once was. Never stop imagining.
I'm right there with ya. I tell ya this song it really tugs at the heartstrings in the best way possible. I even let some tears fall from the same song just sang by a different person in the same movie.
Though I've always loved this song, I always wondered what the lyrics had to do with the plot (except for the line "Love is the key", that is). This version of the song seemed more of a romantic ballad, when there really was no romance in the movie (except for Mrs. B briefly making eyes at Justin). Then, one day, it occurred to me...perhaps this is meant to be Jonathan Brisby, singing to his wife from the other side!

You can unlock any door, if you only have the key. You already have that key. Don't be afraid to knock first. LOVE IS THE KEY. And only you can choose to go thru the door. It's not that bad. I've been thru it multiple times. Use the key. It's the most heroic act you can perform. Special RIP to cast members of the Secret of NIMH who have gone thru a different door, and have found peace on the other side: Songwriter Paul Williams, actors John Carradine, Paul Shenar, Dom DeLuise, and yes the amazing Miss Elizabeth Hartman, whose heart wasin her gorgeous voice when she portrayed Mrs. Brisby the heroic field mouse, who in real life was mentally ill and committed suicide, not even knowing how much joy her performance gave to children worldwide. I loved her as a 13 year old fan. I love her now as I'm 50. God bless you Liz and everyone in the cast, and to fans who still believe in the Secret!!! We are Nimh-rods for life!!!
Dream by night, wish by day Love begins this way Lovin' starts when open hearts touch and stay. Sleep for now, dreamings how lovers' lives are planned Future songs and flying dreams, hand in hand Love it seems made flying dreams, so hearts could soar Heaven sent, these wings were meant to prove once more, that love is the key Love is the key You and I touch the sky the eagle and the dove Nightingales, we keep our sails filled with love And love it seems made flyin' dreams to bring you home to me. _[Instrumental]_ Love it seems made flyin' dreams, so hearts could soar. Heaven sent, these wings were meant to prove once more That love is the key Love is the key You and I touch the sky the eagle and the dove Nightingales, we keep our sails filled with love Ever strong our future song to sing it must be free. Every part is from the heart and love is still the key. And love it seems made flying dreams to bring you home to me.
I'm 36 years old and this is my favorite animated movie of all time. I sang this (and I am a bad singer) to my niece when she spent the night at my house. I love this song. I think Paul Williams is great, because not only did he give me this song to share with my niece, but he also gave the songs from Emmit Otter's Jug Band Christmas, another personal favorite.
I'm 43 and was a child when this came out. It is one of the animated movies that marked me....Even as an adult, I love this song/movie *whispers* I have a N.I.M.H Laboratories T-shirt I wear from time to time, but no one gets it (or is afraid to say that they do)
That you have that t-shirt is awesome. I know I could track one down, but it's still cool you have one. I love the book as well, and my niece still has fond memories of me mangling this perfect lullaby, lol.
I love this song so much, reminds me of my childhood. I'm a big Paul Williams fan because of my mother, she would play his music for me and my siblings. Rest in peace mom
My mom always reminded me of Mrs. Brisby. She had that can do attitude for us kids. Plus she had red hair and that reminded me of mrs. Brisbys shawl. Both my brother have pendants like it too. Mom died in Feb this year. 😢
I've always loved this song! I remember always curling up on the couch in the evening to watch the movie. This song gives me a warm, cozy feeling every time I hear it. :3
I had the VHS of "The Secret of NIMH". During my childhood I have loved "The Secret of NIMH" and "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas". More Thanks for what you did DON BLUTH! More Thanks for what you do TIM BURTON! Compliments from Italy!
When I was little I loved this movie like no other and rewatching it I can say its still my favorite animated movie. This song reminds me of those times I would sleepily lie in bed watching this movie as I drifted off. Man.. easier times.
Great song but a great score and soundtrack too, by Goldsmith. Is an adult and dramatic impressive score for an adult film inside an animation film! Great!
That is for sure! Jerry Goldsmith is one of the best of all time! His music is so very special. Having Paul Williams join him by singing and writing the words for this song was a great idea, and this is a wonderful film!
I love this tune. Its really peaceful and Paul Williams has a beautiful voice to go with it. I was 12-ish when I saw this and I loved it. It is my favorite song in an animated film.
I always love this song video so much Because it is one of my favorite songs videos And I really think that it is so beautiful and so lovely animation music video in the whole world 💘.
When I was little, I first saw this movie. My Dad said when he was in the military and stationed in Germany, he saw this at a theater for American soldiers (I believe) and he got it for my brothers and I on VHS. I've loved it ever since. It's such a great movie, and this song is so beautiful. It will always be one of my favorite animated movies.
Since Mrs Brisby sang this to her sick son, I sang this song once while fixing my truck, hoping I could get a sequel where my broken truck in the first one is the hero and proves to be the top of the line Chevy it is
One of my very dear favorite Don Bluth movie songs!! It first grew on me after I saw the movie at the age of ten. I really love the lyrics! My nephews are getting a little older, but I'd sing it to my niece if I could!
I tear up when hearing this track cause it takes me back to my childhood 😢 back when this film came out.And knowing I'll never be a child again.Adulthood is so stressful the older you get and your health gets more serious too.
Oh, no. My father served during the early 80s after graduating from high school. Only for a couple years. That was the Cold War, before the Soviet Union fell. This movie was released in 1982 (?) I believe and that was when he saw it. I'm only 20 yrs old. My dad's 50. But, yeah, I tear up listening to this song, too.
The music is just... Nostalgic, for some reason. Which is funny, I don't think I've watched this as a kid, only watched it back in 2014-ish. It's magical, almost. Just makes you warm and fuzzy inside.
I think of my unborn son every time I hear this song I had a miscarriage because of my abusive ex… I would always wonder what he would be like? What he would look like? 🥺
@fixinman Superior? Vinyl always sounds a bit softer and more natural than a CD (with the right turntable), but the CD version of this soundtrack sounds as good as a CD can.
my dad would play this on guitar and I would sing with him when I was little. 💜
omg, that's so cute!
Love that.
I'm Happy crying. I was 9 when this movie came out. This song just gets me. I so miss my dad.
You are blessed...may it continue on to your Children ❤️

Jennifer Schillig Well, I'm crying. That's beautiful dude.
Well...I'm just allergic to sadness...*sniff* I'm not crying...nope just leaking from my tear ducts that's all...its so beautiful!
Jennifer Schillig Wow, thank you so much for sharing!
Jennifer Schillig Thankyou. That is beautiful. I can't get that image out of my head.
Jennifer Schillig Yup, always how I have felt about it.
This reminds me of a gentleness from childhood which makes me tear up every time.
Misread your comment as "a genderless" lol
Same. Something about this song connects my heart right back to being 10. I just want to go back. I could’ve stayed there forever.
Same
I sang this to my kids at bedtime and now I sing it to my grandchildren
dedicated this song to my daughter when she was born. i play it for her regularly and dance with her to this song as well

Wait Paul Williams? He's still alive.
@@akcalo Yes he is.
Well said, especially about Elizabeth 🤗❤❤❤
How beautifully said! Thank you for your tribute.
#LoveISTheKey
I always saw this more of a romantic ballad rather than a lullaby. But it serves as both beautifully.
Maybe it's Jonathan singing to mrs. Brisby?

Happy 40th Anniversary to The Secret of NIMH!
Paul Williams is one of the best songwriters who ever lived!
I'm a 31 year old man and i love this song brings back nice memories :)
I love this it's the perfect lullaby
I sang this to my boys when they were babies. I can still feel their little heads on my shoulder when I hear it.
Oh boy, this song still makes me burst into tears when I hear it. I forgot that Paul Williams is responsible for this soundtrack. The man is a genius.
He’s Penguin too on Batman the animated series
@@Johnlindsey289 Yes, he's have a lot of roles. Very talented man.

this is a great song, from a great movie. My nephews watch it all the time. The youngest won't sleep unless he hears this song.
Paul Williams would later go on to play the Penguin in Batman the Animated Series.
And The Hierophant in Adventure Time.
Videot01 , Do you recall Mr. Williams being in the film Smokey and the Bandit?

I have always loved this song. First time I heard this, I was 5. Love this movie! 💘
+Melissa Crider I heard it before the movie, and it seemed old fashioned and corny as ****. In context though, it surprisingly works.
I love this tune. Its really peaceful and Paul Williams has a beautiful voice to go with it. I was 12-ish when I saw this and I loved it. It is my favorite song in an animated film.

The love of this song is really a dream it the lyrics of this song became reality, that would be the luckiest man on the planet.

I'm surprised that You Tube didn't mark this song as MADE FOR KIDS. As least those of us who grew up with this movie, can comment on it's beauty
I love this song cause of it's narrative and cause of what The words are supposed to mean.
I just watched this movie for the first time, I didn't expect it to be so dark. It was okay, but I LOVED this song =)
Whenever I listen to this tune, like right now, I keep dreaming that I saw a pair of animal parents caring for the young, like a family.
that song is so amazing o.o

Makes sense to me. Here's hoping those particular people eventually grow out of that childish.
i wish John Denver had sung this at some point
