  • Welcome to Let's Get Classical, an A - Z of classics readalong! Classics can be scary, daunting and sometimes it's difficult to know where to start when it comes to reading classics so, Sarah and I decided to take some of the stress out of classics by hosting a readalong! Ultimately, we want to get out of our reading comfort zones and make reading classics fun! So, for the next 26 months, we'll be reading a classic every month, making out way through the alphabet as we go! We can't wait to embark on this classics reading journey and we hope you'll join us!

    I might join you for some of these but I'm a very slow reader. I love The House on The Strand. I read it about 10 years ago. Sarah is right with the pronunciation of Waugh. It's one of my Dad's favourite books.

    This is such a great idea, I'm really excited about this readathon! And I love the books that you have selected. At first I wasn't too excited about the first few books but then I realised that this was a wonderful opportunity to broaden my literary horizons, so I'm joining from the letter A. I've also read three books from your list (The Master and Margarita, The Great Gatsby and Slaughterhouse 5) but I would love to re-read all of them, so I'm looking forward to that too.

    So excited for this thank you! Love the selection, got ones on my shelves and ones I've wanted to get round to! Most excited for Frankenstein cause I've been waiting for the "right" time to read it for years haha, and Steinbeck (obvs I did mice and men too and didn't really enjoy it as a teen who only read YA haha so interested to see what I'll think of him, plus I've been wanting to read a multi-generational (I think it is?) epic), and Zelda! Fitz is my fave author and I heard the rumours he took her ideas or whatever but always thought it was diaries, so looking forward to that one too, and so many others:)

    • @ciarascorner

    This is SO exciting! I'm definitely going to join in for some! And you guys are correct with a lot of the movie info here: A Single Man starring Colin Firth. Revolutionary Road starring Leo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
    I'm American so idk how helpful this is but I say Waugh more like Sarah, like I'm about to say "water" but ignore the -ter. btw, I LOVE Brideshead Revisited! I read it in 2020 and thought it was just good, like a solid 3/5 stars, but then I KEPT THINKING ABOUT IT! It ended up having such an impact on me and I've come to really appreciate and respect the story and direction it takes with things, which I was initially disappointed by a little bit when I had read it. Like, it's one of my all-time favorite books, now! AND it's been recently adapted into a new miniseries (there's already a miniseries from 1981 and a film from 2008) that should be coming out this year. It's directed and written by Luca Guadagnino who is most known for Call Me By Your Name and it's starring Andrew Garfield, Joe Alwyn, Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, and Ralph Fiennes. I just bought Decline & Fall by Waugh, so I'm hoping to get to that this year and reread Brideshead before the new adaptation comes out, even if it ends up getting pushed back. Things are so up in the air with release dates nowadays. Also, I read Tess of the D'Urbervilles last year and it was one of my favorites I read in 2021!!

    Ahhh Atwood for A! She’s my favorite author and Alias Grace is one of my faves of hers. Also I love that you mentioned Oryx and Crake…not many people talk about it. It’s actually the first book of a trilogy and I’m reading the second book currently - The Year of the Flood.

    X: Xantippe and Other Verse by Amy Levy
    They said it couldn’t be done, but I did it! I found a classic book for “X”! It’s perhaps not as well known as the others on this list, it’s barely in circulation, and technically Xantippe is a poetry collection, but it counts! The title poem, Xantippe, is an imagined monologue from Socrates’ wife as she lay on her death bed. It’s the star of the show, and well worth checking out for that reason alone…

    • @ciarascorner

      Ooh my bad - thanks for catching, I’ve added it in now - Underground by Haruki Murakami! We did consider Ulysses but as we’re reading another Joyce earlier on decided to go for something different!

    • @anastasia1206
      @anastasia1206 2 года назад

      @@BooksAtMidnight Having read Ulysses, I'm actually glad that it's not on the list. It's a complex book and I feel like a month wouldn't be enough for it. It's doable of course, but I wouldn't rush with it to do it proper justice.
