I know some people won't care, but Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy. It was never about romance, but the tragic way that two families rivalry end up killing their kids.
Romeo was always a shirt chaser, adding to the tragedy.
Romeo was at most 17 (I've heard people debat that he was 23, so I am being generous), Juliet was 13.
They would never stay together.
It adds to the tragedy thst they would have been unhappy, stuck together with no love in their relationship, since Romeo only likes the chase and Juliet is filled with childish romantic thoughts about true love and a happy ever after.
This version perfectly encapsulate the tragic ending of Juliet never finding happiness.
This play is a tragedy, it says so on the cover. It was never meant to be the epitome of Romance that it has turned into.
Thank you.
oh my god this might be my favorite comment ever, every time i listen to this song i read this. I was in romeo and juliet about 2 years ago and i hated how fairytale like they made it... it might be a beautiful tale, but its dark, monstrous, and twisted
wow
yes and no. I agree with you, however to be honest it was a comedy ( the play not the song ). Let me expand, both Romeo and Juliet were extremely dramatic and they were both drama queens. Of course, i don’t mean this in a bad way, it’s really what made the play good in my opinion. I just wanted to say that lol. Thank you for your time :)
I think that's one of the reasons taylor wrote the song. she said before that its a retelling/imagining so they're more than likely both older and get a happier story & ending here. at least, thats what she essentially wanted, the actual happy ending, for the original song.
this version fits romeo and juliet's story so much better
It really is since romeo and juliet has more death than you would expect 💀✋

Taylor's version of love story: a story about two people falling in love
Sarah's version of love version: a story which caused 6 deaths
THAT'S SO ACCURATE-
Why 6 deaths?
@@hambaallah8525 i think it's cause in Romeo and Juilet, six people died. if i remember correctly, it was Mercutio, Tybalt, Lady Montague, Paris, Romeo and Juliet who all died

Taylor’s version: happy vibes
This version: *how Romeo and Juliet really played out*
The reason Sarah's version is better, the rome and juliet story is a tragedy, that's why sarah's version is better because it makes me feel the rome and juliet tragedy
I think they should duet love story with Alexander Rybark and Sarah Cothran, because some parts of the song are written in Romeo's mouth, some parts are juliet's, if it's like I said it would be like Romeo and Juliet singing the song together, it would be really epic.
But the really version is really really good
😭
This feels like Romeo is a dangerous person and Juliets father is trying to protect her because she doesn’t know and she doesn’t listen and Romeo kills her father
WOWOWOW YES I LOVE THIS IDEA
Dude, I never thought of that
This sounds like a very interesting story
So basically Hamlet and Ophelia ?
Somebody needs to make this a fanfiction
This gives me “tragic love story that didn’t end well” vibes and I love it
Well dude the thing is, romeo and juliet is a romantic tragedy so.. gives the exact vibe
Wow almost as if that’s the genre of the Shakespearean play
This gives me malfoy vibes
Lol a tragic love story never ends well
@@___Artemis___ ikr, thats what i am saying but the vibes match perfectly
This gives me “Romeo is making Juliet think she’s crazy, and her dads trying to save her from a toxic relationship, but she doesn’t listen, and it’s to late for her anyway.” Type of vibes, I like it though, and I think this is perfect for tragic love stories in a form of animations or animatics.

I see everyone saying "murder" and "insane" but to me it feels like Juliet lives with an abusive father and she sees Romeo as her escape. She confides in him, trusts him with everything she has, gives him everything, and he ends up being an escape but it's another abusive relationship and she is once again stuck looking for an escape.
That’s actually a really good idea
I could see this as a book idea 👏
THATS WHAT I THINK
@@sohanierampersaud7424 SAME
the more i think about it the more this comment makes sense. “romeo, save me” & “somewhere we can be alone” sounds like she’s trying to ask for help and she doesn’t want her father to know. “my daddy said ‘stay away from juliet’” as well sounds like her father is gaslighting her into thinking she’s the problem, and is reinforcing this idea by telling romeo. “this love is difficult, but is it real?” she’s contemplating how she feels towards both her father and romeo in this lyric it seems to me. “all that’s left to do is run” and “please don’t go” reflect her feelings of fear at being left alone with her father since he’s hurtful to her and her need to run away to keep herself safe. it’s sad how at the end romeo turned out to be abusive / just didn’t care & stopped coming around because she really did need help.
technically they’re the same song, but they’re not the same song at all, they tell two very different stories.
The original sounds more hopeful and happy whilst this version sounds like they both know they’re not in love but they’re in love with the idea of being in love, if that makes sense lol

@@cosmicincandescentglow yes facts
I Stan dark and evil stories that are not romance (depending on the storyline) and happy endings
I like the theories that Romeo is evil in this, but I think that Juliet is actually the murderer. I think she killed Romeo after he didn’t say yes like she asked throughout the whole beginning. Then the ending is all just something she’s made up in her head in the mental asylum.
So good!

LYRICS:
We were both young when I first saw you
I close my eyes and the flashback starts:
I'm standing there
On a balcony in summer air
See the lights, see the party, the ball gowns
See you make your way through the crowd
And say, "Hello."
Little did I know
That you were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles
And my daddy said, "Stay away from Juliet."
And I was crying on the staircase
Begging you, "Please don't go."
And I said
"Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting. All there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess
It's a love story. Baby, just say 'Yes'."
So, I sneak out to the garden to see you
We keep quiet 'cause we're dead if they knew
So, close your eyes
Escape this town for a little while
Oh, oh
'Cause you were Romeo. I was a scarlet letter
And my daddy said, "Stay away from Juliet."
But you were everything to me
I was begging you, "Please don't go!"
And I said
"Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting. All there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess
It's a love story. Baby, just say 'Yes'
Romeo, save me. They're trying to tell me how to feel
This love is difficult but it's real
Don't be afraid. We'll make it out of this mess
It's a love story. Baby, just say 'Yes'."
Oh, oh, oh
I got tired of waiting
Wondering if you were ever coming around
My faith in you was fading
When I met you on the outskirts of town
And I said
"Romeo, save me. I've been feeling so alone
I keep waiting for you, but you never come
Is this in my head? I don't know what to think."
He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring and said
"Marry me, Juliet. You'll never have to be alone
I love you, and that's all I really know
I talked to your dad. Go pick out a white dress
It's a love story. Baby, just say 'Yes'."

In my opinion, this sort of gives the feel that Juliet is the crazy one, frantically pursuing her obsession, dipping in and out of fantasy and reality. "I sneak out to the garden to see you," for instance, I imagine her sneaking *into* the garden to watch Romeo from his window. She's saying it's a love story, begging him to just say yes, and don't go, but that's all inside of her head. She's never even *spoken* to him beyond stuttered "Hello," but she whispers her desires, hidden in a garden bush as she watches him dress and go through his routines.
"They're trying to tell me how to feel" represents the concern for this unhealthy obsession from those who are aware of it, trying to pull her away, but because of this world that Juliet has built, because of how deep her delusions have gone, she sees this as a real obstruction of their imagined romance rather than the genuine concern that it is.
I feel like the ending is almost the only 'real' part. "I got tired of waiting, wondering if you were ever coming around, my faith in you was fading" and then, when we get to "when I met you on the outskirts of town," it shifts back into that unreality. In reality, she left him a note with her name, and it was so disgusting that he didn't dare touch it. He opens it, and like, maybe locks of her hair slip free, onto the floor, so he drops the letter, completely disgusted. Calls for a maid or butler to dispose of it. He never meets her-never has, never will.
Romeo is only just a man that Juliet craves and pines for, stalking and begging secretly for his attention, but whom Juliet has, ultimately, never had any 'real' interactions with. She saw him, once, when they were children, and latched on completely. He greeted her later at an event, as is polite, but she takes this almost as a confession, that politeness being enough to strike a chord in her heart, to make her feel as though he, too, loves her, but they have *never* connected. Never officially met. They've only seen each other in passing, but each time, each place, builds up new fantasies. She stands on her balcony as he passes by her house, eager to see him, to send a little wave, and she builds that up in her head and makes it romantic, just like the garden "visit."
"We'd be dead if they knew" is just slightly self-aware, due to her repeated counts of stalking and trespassing.
Everything, every 'account' where they make contact is pure fantasy-the imaginings of an obsessed woman, which is why, in the end, the only thing Romeo ever says only echoes Juliet's own words from the start: "It's a love story, baby, just say yes."
This iteration of Romeo isn't real, and never was, Juliet, as an unreliable narrator, *made him up,* constructed him slip-shod out of these barely there interactions, and read a single instance of politeness as a love confession, and so, rather than being something genuine, something *else,* the first words we ever hear-the *only* words we hear from Romeo just echo her own obsessive thoughts. She's so ... deep into this delusion, this fantasy, that she believes it all - and when he doesn't meet her ? Doesn't show up.
She makes up her own ending, because after the world she's built, she cannot cope with the alternative.
Wanted to add.
"We keep quiet cuz we'd be dead if they knew, so close your eyes. Escape this town for a little while."
She uses this fantasy Romeo as escapism.
In some place, internally, somewhere, Juliet is aware that she is wrong, but as stated. She is in too deep by now. He is everything to her, after all.
"This love is difficult"-referencing her real life struggles with the delusions, the doubt, the worry and concern; her maintaining this delusion is difficult.
And "But it's real" is her trying to reaffirm, both to herself, and others, that it is real.
"Don't be afraid, we'll make it out of this mess," is directed not towards Romeo, but herself.
"Is this in my head, I don't know what to think" is also a brief sense of lucidity yet again. She is aware on some level, but as she is deeply rooted in her psychosis, she literally *does not know.* It is hard for her to separate reality from fiction at this stage. She believes her family to some extent, but she has built up trust with her delusions-Romeo is a man she trusts, and he never speaks unkindly to her. She believes-wants to believe; *tries* to believe-that his love is real, and rather than addressing that further, her lucidity fades, she is engrossed again, and 'Romeo' kneels to the ground and pulls out a ring, further entrenching her in this.
Also, the past tense state of this story leads me to believe that Juliet is in asylum, and rather than getting better, because of her conditions, she has, instead, regressed deeper into the delusion, hence the tones of escapism that exist throughout. Leaving town. Getting out. Crying. Running away.
Even begging him not to go as, when sedated, Romeo would leave, and she'd have to wait for him to come back, over and over, again and again.
Adding, also, more depth to "They're trying to tell me how to feel," and compounds on the difficulty of their "love."

@@kirraroe8498 true, like their love story is a tragedy. It's like dumb love and this cover fits it so well.
I seen a few people say that imagine the story of an abusive family for Juliet from this song, but I have another interpretation (maybe because of experience that I identifie more to another storyline).
Juliet was since her childhood isolated from other people while her parents worked very hard, leaving her alone. She hated and was afraid of being alone because of her childhood, which makes her desperate to be always with someone, to be loved like she never was in her childhood. When she meets Romeo, while he falls instantly in love with her, she doesn't, she just wants someone and Romeo being really nice to her, she becomes dependent of him. Knowing that, Romeo forces her into a love story which Juliet accepts, not caring about the type of relationship, if she has one, it's enough for her. Even though she doesn't love him.
When Romeo leaves her for a few days, she starts falling into madness and desperation, her craving for presence and attention becoming a real mental issue. Romeo took advantage of it, and when he came back, and asked her to marry him. Truly desperate, she accepts without thinking, falling in tears into his arms.
She tells her "love story", years after, now that she has her friends, loving children and a normal life, realising her husband that she thought loving was just using her issues to make her marry him.
Hope you like it ! (Sorry for the bad English ^^)

Hearing this dark version of the song, it occurred to me that Romeo was a boy who breaks the hearts of beautiful girls. Juliet was also a beautiful girl, and Romeo expressed her false love for her. But in a fire incident, Juliet went blind and lost all her possessions, and when she thought someone she loved was the only one who would stay with her, Romeo left her alone... And Juliet lived until the last minute with memories of the old Romeo she knew. And as she sang, she threw herself down the balcony and fell into the bush of a barbed white rose that symbolized the same wedding dress and ended life.....
Sorry for some incorrect words and phrases, I had to use several translators for this text. I do not speak much English, but I hope you understand the story I imagined :)
This sounds like an alternate ending to Romeo and Juliet. Where Juliet finds Romeo's body, and instead of killing herself, she goes insane. She has these fantasies where they run off and live their life to the fullest. But in reality, she locks Romeo's body in the basement and visits him daily, treating him like he's alive. In her head she's seeing her love, not knowing she's delusional and talking to what was once Romeo.

I like to view Cothran’s version as her retelling of Romeo’s type “love story” but sad and like a bad memory. Her side showing the details that Romeo’s missed and showing us all of story. "We'd be dead if they knew", "Stay away from Juliet", "Romeo save me, they're tryna' tell me how to feel".
I think the line "Baby just say yes" is Juliet talking and trying to convince Romeo to run away with her like they planned to as children.

This sounds like if Romeo and Juliet murder their families and ran away together

Bro- thank you I'll add this to my imaginary story
@@Nookshush please do
I-
We were both young when I first saw you
I close my eyes and the flashback starts
I'm standin' there
On a balcony in summer air
See the lights, see the party, the ball gowns
See you make your way through the crowd
And say, "Hello"
Little did I know
That you were Romeo, you were throwin' pebbles
And my daddy said, "Stay away from Juliet"
And I was cryin' on the staircase
Beggin' you, "Please don't go", and I said
Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting, all there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess
It's a love story, baby, just say...
So I sneak out to the garden to see you
We keep quiet, 'cause we're dead if they knew
So close your eyes
Escape this town for a little while, oh oh
'Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter
And my daddy said, "Stay away from Juliet"
But you were everything to me
I was beggin' you, "Please don't go", and I said
Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting, all there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess
It's a love story, baby, just say, "Yes"
Romeo, save me, they're tryna tell me how to feel
This love is difficult, but it's real
Don't be afraid, we'll make it out of this mess
It's a love story, baby, just say, "Yes"
I got tired of waiting
Wonderin' if you were ever comin' around
My faith in you was fading
When I met you on the outskirts of town, and I said
Romeo, save me, I've been feeling so alone
I keep waiting for you, but you never come
Is this in my head? I don't know what to think
He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring and said
"Marry me, Juliet
You'll never have to be alone
I love you and that's all I really know
I talked to your dad, go pick out a white dress"
It's a love story, baby, just say, "Yes"

Omg totally sister
Ikr same
But her songs aren't a new version. They're a re-recording. She isn't covering her songs, she's doing them all over again so she can't change anything. Otherwise it would defeat the purpose and people would still listen to the old songs that Sc**ter owns
Taylor Swift song, with Lana del Ray vibes
my thoughts as well hahaha
Yesss, my lord!!!!
Ikrrr
yes lol
Rey* sorry luv
Her voice is literally an Angel. I‘m shook
For the sake of it, here's my very long/detailed mental music video description
So it starts out showing Juliet who's wearing a simple dress and shawl, standing in the center of a crossroad and leaning against a signpost. She looks off into the darkness of night with a vacant expression as the camera zooms into her eye, then back out, showing her leaning on her balcony in a happier state- taking a brief respite from the extravagant party her father is throwing. Swirling skirts and laughing faces are seen in a panning shot of the ballroom, candle light glinting off the wall sconces and patrons' jewelry. Romeo makes his way through the jovial guests to stand beside her, making small talk and eventually leading to deeper conversations and hushed laughter. She leans against his shoulder and smiles contentedly before blinking, moving the timeline forward to autumn when Romeo was throwing pebbles, as is common by this point, and climbs up her balcony to be with her. Maybe they were just enjoying each others company or maybe they were enjoying each others "company"- regardless of what they were up to, her father finds out and has him roughly hauled down the staircase, all the while berating him and threatening his life if he ever finds him with his daughter again. Juliet rushes down the staircase after them, begging her father to stop whilst crying out for Romeo to not leave.
Later that night we see her writing a letter to him, venting about the situation and confessing her love to him before she slides the letter into an envelope and seals it before dropping it down to the grass below where he stands waiting.
We zoom into the white of the paper then pan out to her silently making her way to Romeo who is waiting in the snowy garden for her. They stroll through the hedges and whatnot, being quiet and both sharing a large shawl since it's a cold winter's night. Romeo and Juliet face each other and lean close so they can brainstorm a plan for her escape. The foreground, where they're discussing stuff, blurs and instead focuses on an upper story window that's illuminated by a single candle- her father glares out at them without them noticing. We see his face is contorted in fury as Romeo departs from Juliet's side, having agreed on a course of action.
Now the chorus kicks in again and we see lots of shots at ground level- people are running somewhere. These are intercut with scenes showing what's happening. Juliet rushes around her room to get a few possessions that she'd like to take with her when they leave. Romeo is running for his life through a dark and snowy forest while pursued by the father and his compatriots on horseback. Puffs of air escape their noses and mouths due to the extreme cold and finally one of them gets to Romeo and throws a noose over his head, dragging his flailing desperate body behind them as the horses keep running, heading to a clearing and preparing to lynch him for not heading the father's warning-- all this is happening while Juliet runs to the outskirts of town and waits next to the signpost, completely oblivious to what has happened.
Now is the bridge- she has been waiting for many hours now and he has still not made it. She slumps down and huddles against the post, wrapping her shivering frame in her thin shawl. She hadn't anticipated the long wait.
Pitifully she cries and shakes, fingertips and lips slightly blue, tears freezing on her cheeks and eyelashes. Just when she seems ready to give up we see Romeo galloping up on his horse, the scenery growing much more vibrant and bright the closer he gets to her. He quickly leaps off his horse to sweep her into his warm embrace and they share a long kiss. He wipes her eyes and explains that her father finally accepted their relationship, agreeing to let them marry and live happily ever after. A wide smile spreads across her face as she cries tears of joy, eyes glittering-- then we zoom into her eye again, like at the beginning, and it pulls out to show her slumped form still sitting in the snow. Her last dream was that he'd finally arrived to spirit her away to their new future together. Dawn has broken over the horizon and we see she's very much not alive. Blue lips are slightly parted, eyes partially open and frozen over, fingertips and the tip of her nose look almost black due to frostbite. The scene blurs and goes back to the opening- her form still standing in the crossroads from the beginning. She's very obviously a ghost and continues to stare off into the void, waiting for her Romeo to save her.
Wow!

This deserves more likes
*me, a tragedy lover's pov* : Juliet is abused in her house and she finally starts to lose her mind. Her mind makes an image of a boy; Romeo, who she loves dearly, and wishes that he would take her away from the deranged household. Her final days she starts to lose hope, she cries for her Romeo to save her.
One day Romeo asks her to meet him near a plain hill side of the town. Seeing him after many days, she starts screaming in agony about how she had enough of the pain. Romeo just smiles and gets down on his knee, she sees a little glint of diamond in his hand. Her teared up face breaks out into a smile. He tells her how her father had agreed to the marriage and asks her to pull a white dress for the matrimony.
*No more pain, she would be free, finally* ; that's all that runs through her mind. Romeo spreads his arms wide for her. She runs towards him, into his arms. But Juliet goes through him and stumbles at the cliff. He holds his hand out to save her, she tries to hold it, but the image of Romeo fades away. As she falls down from the cliff, she realises how her Romeo had saved her from the abusive house and lead her to the ultimate freedom; Death.
this gave me chills
This is perfect especially the part where you said “she cries for her Romeo to save her”
As if my depression wasn’t bad enough.
@@TeaserTravlein sorry for that-
The best ❤️❤️
This reminds me of Emily from the corpse bride. She defied her parents, fell in love, and ran away with the man who ended up murdering her for her dowery on the outskirts of town. So when Romeo returns in the song, it doesn’t end as happy.
Really, because this reminds me of the book Clarissa: The story of a virtuous, beautiful young woman who is brought to tragedy by the wickedness of her world. 18-year-old Clarissa Harlowe is universally loved and admired, considered an exemplary woman by everyone around her. The other members of the family are avaricious and eager to improve their standing in the world, and Clarissa becomes the victim of their greed. Part of it starts with Clarissa being the inheritor of her grandfather's estate, and Richard Lovelace. Eventually Lovelace takes advantage of Clarissa’s fear of a forced marriage by tricking her into running away with him. An adept manipulator, he enjoys the “contrivances” he invents to keep Clarissa in his web. He is in love with her, but he hates the idea of marriage, so his goal is to force her into “cohabitation,” rather than marriage. Here's the film adaption: ruclips.net/video/Je9l5kuKv0Q/видео.html&ab_channel=LucilleCastineau

You know the song is good when it gives you chills…
Nah just dumb a sad
Imagine if this version gets used somehow in a possible adaptation of These Violent Delights (R/J retelling in 1920's Shanghai with rival gangs and some fantasy sprinkled in.)
It'll be perfect.
oh my gosh- that would be incredible
THIS! I was looking for a comment on These Violent Delights. This version is perfect for that story of murder, betrayal and bloodshed. If we are talking about vibes, Jude and Cardan from The Cruel Prince series as a couple gives off Tay's version of the song but Roma and Juliette very much give off this version as a couple.
That's actually kind of funny cause I feel Juliette and Jude would be very good friends while terrorizing Shanghai and Elfhame.
Omg I was literally thinking this. I need that TV adaptation

To me it sounds like JULIET is the one obsessed with romeo and she probably wants to escape her household so she meets her ideal "romeo" who she probably made up in her head so that he can "take her away" but in reality no one is there.
Her father and everyone is trying to tell her that there's no one there but she keeps thinking that they're "trying to tell her how to feel" when in reality they're just trying to help her
She starts questioning herself in the end "is this all in my head?" probably meaning that she doesn't know the difference between reality and fantasy.
It sounds like poor juliet is really lonely inside and wants someone to comfort her
@NUR AISHA SYUHADA BINTI YUSNI Moe I was going to comment exactly the same 🤡🤡 TwT

Okay but plot twist...this feels like instead of Romeo and Juliet killing themselves, they kill their families so they can be together
damn- you think the same as me lol-
Okay, hear me out: this is Juliet retelling the story after it happened but the relationship didn’t end up so happy and Romeo isn’t the nice guy she thought he was. She’s singing as she remembers falling in love with him and wishes she could go back and tell herself to listen to listen to her dad and not fall in love with him.

IKR I love Taylor Swift but I love this version way more than the original!
@CæpricOrn Taylor literally wrote this song because she didn't like the way the original story ended, that's why hers doesn't sound so tragic:)
I’m imagining Juliet has Stockholm syndrome and even though she was rescued she is going crazy and keeps trying to get back to who she thinks is her Romeo but is really just her kidnapper
POV : Juliet was running in the woods trying to find Romeo and escape the "killers" (people who disagree with their relationship) but in the end.....
*Romeo was already dead.*
I could hear Juliet singing this in an asylum, jail, or isolation because she killed Romeo. This could also be a sister or mother singing about their sister/daughter who was killed by her husband, or a heartbroken person singing about being this close to being happy in love, but their love was killed or stolen by someone else.
Okay so here is my version: Juliet loves Romeo and he loves her, but her Dad murders Romeo in front of her.
Juliet begs Romeo for staying with her but he dies. After that Juliet is going crazy and she still thinks that Romeo is alive and screams:
"Romeo, save me, I've been feeling so alone. I keep waiting for you, but you never come. Is this in my head? I don't know what to think." She can see Romeo as a ghost and He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring And said:
"Marry me, Juliet, you'll never have to be alone. I love you, and that's all I really know." Of course she wants to marry him but her Family thinks she is insane and locks her up in the dungeons. Juliet crys at night for romeo: "Romeo, save me, they're trying to tell me how to feel." And then she kills herself to be with Romeo for infinity.

This sounds like the book's accurate version of Romeo and Juliet and I am so here for it. I kinda wish she'd changed the lyrics so it ended tragically.
I got literal chills while listening to this
It sounds like some girl is selling her soul to the devil but the devil falls in love with her.
Starting at "pulled out a ring"
I picture him kneeling, asking her to be his queen. The chorus in the background is the portal opening behind him showing the chained prisoners but also a castle, all the while dramatic wind is coming out of nowhere indoors. Then the girl is so shocked and slightly scared.
It's so eerie yet comfortable for me and I'm here for it
That gives black butler vibes

Funfact: Romeo was 14 (or older i can't remember) and Juliet was 12, they were just kids basically play pretending but they both ended up dying, Shakespear meant it when he said it was a tragedy.
